Claims
- 1. A chewing gum which comprises:
- a gum base;
- a water soluble bulk portion; and,
- a gradual release structure formed by extruding a mixture of active agent and polymeric wall material having more than zero but less than about 55 percent by weight active agent.
- 2. The chewing gum of claim 1 in which the wall material comprises a polyvinylacetate.
- 3. The chewing gum of claim 1 in which the active agent comprises aspartame.
- 4. The chewing gum of claim 1 in which the wall material comprises polyvinylacetate having a molecular weight of about 15,000.
- 5. The chewing gum of claim 1 in which the wall material comprises polyvinylacetate having a molecular weight of about 30,000.
- 6. The chewing gum of claim 1 in which the wall material comprises polyvinylacetate having a molecular weight from about 50,000 to about 80,000.
- 7. The chewing gum of claim 1 in which the wall material comprises a blend of polyvinylacetates having molecular weights from about 15,000 to about 80,000.
- 8. The chewing gum of claim 1 in which the gradual release structure can pass through a 60 mesh screen.
- 9. The chewing gum of claim 1 in which the gradual release structure can pass through a 40 mesh screen.
- 10. The chewing gum of claim 1 in which the active agent comprises a high intensity sweetener.
- 11. The chewing gum of claim 1 in which the active agent comprises alitame.
- 12. The chewing gum of claim 1 in which the active agent comprises Acesulfam-K.
- 13. The chewing gum of claim 1 in which the active agent comprises glycyrrhizin.
- 14. The chewing gum of claim 1 in which the active agent comprises a sugar and glycyrrhizin.
- 15. A chewing gum which comprises:
- a gum base;
- a water soluble bulk portion; and,
- a gradual release structure formed by extruding a mixture of active agent and polymeric wall material having more than zero but less than about 55 percent by weight active agent into an extrudate having a cross sectional area of at least about one half square inches and grinding the extrudate.
- 16. The chewing gum of claim 15 in which the wall material comprises a polyvinylacetate.
- 17. The chewing gum of claim 15 in which the active agent comprises aspartame.
- 18. The chewing gum of claim 15 in which the wall material comprises polyvinylacetate having a molecular weight of about 15,000.
- 19. The chewing gum of claim 15 in which the wall material comprises polyvinylacetate having a molecular weight of about 30,000.
- 20. The chewing gum of claim 15 in which the wall material comprises polyvinylacetate having a molecular weight from about 50,000 to about 80,000.
- 21. The chewing gum of claim 15 in which the wall material comprises a blend of polyvinylacetates having molecular weights from about 15,000 to about 80,000.
- 22. The chewing gum of claim 15 in which the gradual release structure can pass through a 60 mesh screen.
- 23. The chewing gum of claim 15 in which the gradual release structure can pass through a 40 mesh screen.
- 24. The chewing gum of claim 15 in which the active agent comprises a high intensity sweetener.
- 25. The chewing gum of claim 15 in which the active agent comprises alitame.
- 26. The chewing gum of claim 15 in which the active agent comprises Acesulfam-K.
- 27. The chewing gum of claim 15 in which the active agent comprises glycyrrhizin.
- 28. The chewing gum of claim 15 in which the active agent comprises a sugar and glycyrrhizin.
- 29. A chewing gum which comprises:
- a gum base;
- a water soluble bulk portion; and,
- a gradual release structure formed by extruding a mixture of active agent and polymeric wall material having more than about 10 but less than about 55 percent by weight active agent.
- 30. The chewing gum of claim 29 in which the wall material comprises a polyvinylacetate.
- 31. The chewing gum of claim 29 in which the active agent comprises aspartame.
- 32. The chewing gum of claim 29 in which the wall material comprises polyvinylacetate having a molecular weight of about 15,000.
- 33. The chewing gum of claim 29 in which the wall material comprises polyvinylacetate having a molecular weight of about 30,000.
- 34. The chewing gum of claim 29 in which the wall material comprises polyvinylacetate having a molecular weight from about 50,000 to about 80,000.
- 35. The chewing gum of claim 29 in which the wall material comprises a blend of polyvinylacetates having molecular weights from about 15,000 to about 80,000.
- 36. The chewing gum of claim 29 in which the gradual release structure can pass through a 60 mesh screen.
- 37. The chewing gum of claim 29 in which the gradual release structure can pass through a 40 mesh screen.
- 38. The chewing gum of claim 29 in which the active agent comprises a high intensity sweetener.
- 39. The chewing gum of claim 29 in which the active agent comprises alitame.
- 40. The chewing gum of claim 29 in which the active agent comprises Acesulfam-K.
- 41. The chewing gum of claim 29 in which the active agent comprises glycyrrhizin.
- 42. The chewing gum of claim 29 in which the active agent comprises a sugar and glycyrrhizin.
- 43. A chewing gum which comprises:
- a gum base;
- a water soluble bulk portion; and,
- a gradual release structure formed by extruding a mixture of active agent and polymeric wall material having more than about 15 but less than about 55 percent by weight active agent.
- 44. The chewing gum of claim 43 in which the wall material comprises a polyvinylacetate.
- 45. The chewing gum of claim 43 in which the active agent comprises aspartame.
- 46. The chewing gum of claim 43 in which the wall material comprises polyvinylacetate having a molecular weight of about 15,000.
- 47. The chewing gum of claim 43 in which the wall material comprises polyvinylacetate having a molecular weight of about 30,000.
- 48. The chewing gum of claim 43 in which the wall material comprises polyvinylacetate having a molecular weight from about 50,000 to about 80,000.
- 49. The chewing gum of claim 43 in which the wall material comprises a blend of polyvinylacetates having molecular weights from about 15,000 to about 80,000.
- 50. The chewing gum of claim 43 in which the gradual release structure can pass through a 60 mesh screen.
- 51. The chewing gum of claim 43 in which the gradual release structure can pass through a 40 mesh screen.
- 52. The chewing gum of claim 43 in which the active agent comprises a high intensity sweetener.

- a gum base;

- a gradual release structure formed by extruding a mixture of active agent and polymeric wall material having more than about 25 but less than about 55 percent by weight active agent.
- 58. The chewing gum of claim 57 in which the wall material comprises a polyvinylacetate.
- 59. The chewing gum of claim 57 in which the active agent comprises aspartame.
- 60. The chewing gum of claim 57 in which the wall material comprises polyvinylacetate having a molecular weight of about 15,000.
- 61. The chewing gum of claim 57 in which the wall material comprises polyvinylacetate having a molecular weight of about 30,000.
- 62. The chewing gum of claim 57 in which the wall material comprises polyvinylacetate having a molecular weight from about 50,000 to about 80,000.
- 63. The chewing gum of claim 57 in which the wall material comprises a blend of polyvinylacetates having molecular weights from about 15,000 to about 80,000.
- 64. The chewing gum of claim 57 in which the gradual release structure can pass through a 60 mesh screen.

- 70. The chewing gum of claim 57 in which the active agent comprises a sugar and glycyrrhizin.
- 71. A process for making chewing gum which comprises the steps of:
- a. preparing a gum base;
- b. preparing a water soluble bulk portion;
- c. preparing a gradual release structure which comprises the steps of:
- i. preparing a mixture of active agent and wall material, having more than zero but less than about 55 percent by weight active agent;
- ii. extruding the mixture; and,
- iii. grinding the extruded mixture; and,
- d. combining the gradual release structure, the gum base and the water soluble bulk portion.
- 72. The process of claim 71 in which the active agent comprises Aspartame.
- 73. The process of claim 71 in which the wall material comprises polyvinylacetate having a molecular weight of about 15,000.
- 74. The process of claim 71 in which the wall material comprises polyvinylacetate having a molecular weight of about 30,000.
- 75. The process of claim 71 in which the wall material comprises polyvinylacetate having a molecular weight from about 50,000 to about 80,000.
- 76. The process of claim 71 in which the gradual release structure can pass through a 60 mesh screen.
- 77. The process of claim 71 in which the gradual release structure can pass through a 40 mesh screen.
- 78. The process of claim 71 in which the wall material comprises a blend of polyvinylacetates having molecular weights from about 15,000 to about 80,000.
- 79. The process of claim 71 in which the active agent comprises a high intensity sweetener.
- 80. The process of claim 71 in which the active agent comprises alitame.
- 81. The process of claim 71 in which the active agent comprises Acesulfam-K.
- 82. The process of claim 71 in which the active agent comprises a glycyrrhizin.
- 83. The process of claim 71 in which the active agent comprises a sugar and a glycyrrhizin.
- 84. The process of claim 71 in which the mixture of active agent and wall material has more than about 10 percent by weight active agent.
- 85. The process of claim 71 in which the mixture of active agent and wall material has more than about 15 percent by weight active agent.
- 86. The process of claim 71 in which the mixture of active agent and wall material has more than about 25 percent by weight active agent.
- 87. A process for making a chewing gum having a gradual release structure which comprises the steps of:
- preparing a gum base;
- preparing a water soluble bulk portion;
- preparing a mixture of active agent and wall material;
- extruding the mixture to form an extrudate;
- cooling the extrudate by passing it over a chill roll;
- grinding the extrudate; and
- combining the gum base, water soluble bulk portion and gradual release structure.
- 88. The process of claim 87 in which the wall material comprises polyvinylacetate having a molecular weight of about 15,000.
- 89. The process of claim 87 in which the wall material comprises polyvinylacetate having a molecular weight of about 30,000.
- 90. The process of claim 87 in which the wall material comprises polyvinylacetate having a molecular weight from about 50,000 to about 80,000.
- 91. The process of claim 87 in which the wall material comprises a blend of polyvinylacetates having molecular weights from about 15,000 to about 80,000.
- 92. The process of claim 87 in which the gradual release structure can pass through a 60 mesh screen.
- 93. The process of claim 87 in which the sugar is mixed with the mixture of glycyrrhizin and wall material.
- 94. The process of claim 87 in which the active agent comprises Acesulfam-K.
