Claims
- 1. A thermoplastic polymer blend comprising one or more thermoplastic polymers and a substantially linear ethylene polymer grafted with at least about 0.01 wt. %, based on the weight of the grafted ethylene polymer, of an unsaturated organic compound containing at least one site of ethylenic unsaturation and at least one carbonyl group, the ethylene polymer characterized as having:
- (i) a melt flow ratio, I.sub.10 /I.sub.2 .gtoreq.5.63;
- (ii) a molecular weight distribution, M.sub.w /M.sub.n, defined by the equation: M.sub.w /M.sub.n .ltoreq.(I.sub.10 /I.sub.2)-4.63;
- (iii) a density greater than about 0.850 g/cm.sup.3 ; and
- (iv) a critical shear rate at onset of surface melt fracture of at least 50 percent greater than the critical shear rate at the onset of surface melt fracture of a linear olefin polymer having about the same I.sub.2 and Mw/Mn.
- 2. The thermoplastic polymer blend of claim 1, further comprising a nongrafted substantially linear ethylene polymer.
- 3. The polymer blend of claim 2 in which the thermoplastic polymer blend further comprises at least one of ethylene acrylic acid; ethylene/vinyl acetate; a polymer of ethylene and carbon monoxide; a polymer of ethylene, propylene, and carbon monoxide; or a polymer of ethylene, carbon monoxide, and acrylic acid.
- 4. The thermoplastic polymer blend of claim 1 in which the thermoplastic polymer is selected from the group consisting of polyurethane, polycarbonate, polystyrene, polyester, epoxy, polyamide, a polyolefin containing polar groups, acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer, and mixtures thereof.
- 5. The thermoplastic polymer blend of claim 4, wherein the grafted substantially linear ethylene polymer is provided in an amount of from about 2 to about 70 weight percent, based on the total weight of the thermoplastic polymer blend.
- 6. The thermoplastic polymer blend of claim 5 wherein the thermoplastic polymer is polyester and the polymer blend is prepared by melt blending the grafted ethylene polymer and the polyester.
- 7. The thermoplastic polymer blend of claim 6 wherein the melt blending is performed in an extruder.
- 8. The thermoplastic polymer blend of claim 6 wherein the melt blending is performed in a Banbury mixer.
- 9. The thermoplastic polymer blend of claim 5 wherein the thermoplastic polymer is polyamide and the polymer blend is prepared by melt blending the grafted ethylene polymer and the polyamide.
- 10. The thermoplastic polymer blend of claim 9 wherein the melt blending is performed in an extruder.
- 11. The thermoplastic polymer blend of claim 9 wherein the melt blending is performed in a Banbury mixer.
- 12. The thermoplastic polymer blend of claim 4, wherein the grafted substantially linear ethylene polymer is provided in an amount of from about 10 to about 50 weight percent, based on the total weight of the thermoplastic polymer blend.
- 13. The thermoplastic polymer blend of claim 4, wherein the grafted substantially linear ethylene polymer is provided in an amount of from about 20 to about 35 weight percent, based on the total weight of the blend.
- 14. The thermoplastic polymer blend of claim 1, wherein the thermoplastic polymer blend comprises from about 10 to about 50 weight percent of the grafted substantially linear ethylene polymer, based on the total weight of the thermoplastic polymer, and from about 50 to about 90 weight percent of a polyester, based on the total weight of the thermoplastic polymer blend.
- 15. The thermoplastic polymer blend of claim 1, wherein the thermoplastic polymer blend comprises from about 10 to about 50 weight percent of the grafted substantially linear ethylene polymer, based on the total weight of the thermoplastic polymer blend, and from about 50 to about 90 weight percent of a polyamide based on the total weight of the thermoplastic polymer blend.
- 16. The thermoplastic polymer blend of claim 1, wherein the thermoplastic polymer blend comprises from about 20 to about 35 weight percent of the grafted substantially linear ethylene polymer, based on the total weight of the blend, and from about 65 to about 80 weight percent of a polyamide, based on the total weight of the thermoplastic polymer blend.
- 17. The thermoplastic polymer blend of claim 1, wherein the thermoplastic polymer blend comprises from about 20 to about 35 weight percent of the substantially linear ethylene polymer, based on the total weight of the thermoplastic polymer blend, and from about 65 to about 80 weight percent of a polyester, based on the total weight of the thermoplastic polymer blend.
- 18. The thermoplastic polymer blend of claim 1 in which the thermoplastic polymer is polycarbonate.
- 19. The thermoplastic polymer blend of claim 1 in which the thermoplastic polymers are polycarbonate and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer.
- 20. The thermoplastic polymer blend of claim 1 in which the thermoplastic polymers are polyester and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer.
- 21. The thermoplastic polymer blend of claim 1 in which the thermoplastic polymers are polycarbonate and polyester.
- 22. The thermoplastic polymer blend of claim 21 in the form of a molded or extruded shaped article.
- 23. The thermoplastic polymer blend of claim 1 in which the thermoplastic polymers are polycarbonate, polyester and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer.
- 24. The thermoplastic polymer blend of claim 1 in which the unsaturated organic compound is maleic anhydride.
- 25. The thermoplastic polymer blend of claim 1 in the form of a molded or extruded shaped article.
