Claims
- 1. A waveform measurement invocation system for use in a signal measurement system having a graphical user interface, said waveform measurement invocation system configured to provide graphical control elements on the graphical user interface, each of said graphical control elements representing a specific measurement function, wherein graphically associating a graphical control element with a selected displayed waveform invokes said specific measurement function on the selected displayed waveform, wherein said graphical association is achieved by a user selecting and dragging said icon across said graphical user interface, and subsequently releasing said icon at a position proximate to a displayed waveform.
- 2. The waveform measurement invocation system of claim 1, wherein said graphical association results in the subsequent display of measurement results on the graphical user interface.
- 3. A system for graphically invoking measurement functions in a signal measurement system having a graphical user interface, comprising:a measurement toolbar manager constructed and arranged to display a plurality of measurement icons each associated with a signal measurement function; a waveform identifier constructed and arranged to enable the user to graphically associate a selected measurement icon selected from said plurality of measurement icons with a source waveform displayed on a waveform display region of the graphical user interface by positioning said measurement icon proximate to said source waveform on the graphical interface; and a measurement controller constructed and arranged to invoke, in response to said graphical association, said selected measurement function on a measurement extent of said source waveform.
- 4. The system of claim 3, wherein said measurement controller is further constructed and arranged to validate said association of said selected measurement and said source waveform prior to invoking said selected measurement function on said measurement extent of said source waveform.
- 5. A graphical system for signal measurement function invocation wherein a descriptive graphical control element representing a signal measurement function is displayed on a graphical user interface of a signal measurement system, wherein said represented measurement function is invoked on a selected displayed waveform in response to a user graphically positioning said graphical control element adjacent to a specific extent of said selected displayed waveform.
- 6. The graphical system of claim 5, wherein said graphical positioning is performed in response to a user selecting and dragging said graphical control element from a first position on said graphical user interface to a second position proximate to said selected waveform and subsequently deselecting said graphical control element.
- 7. The graphical system of claim 5, wherein said graphical association is performed in response to a user graphically selecting said graphical control element followed by the user graphically selecting said selected waveform.
- 8. The graphical system of claim 5, wherein each said graphical control element comprises:a bitmap that provides a pictorial description of said corresponding waveform measurement function.
- 9. A method for invoking waveform measurements in a signal measurement system having a graphical user interface, comprising the steps of:(a) determining which of one or more measurement icons rendered on said graphical user interface has been selected by the user; (b) enabling the user to reposition said selected measurement icon from an original position to a new position adjacent to one of one or more waveforms displayed on said graphical user interface; (c) determining which of one or more waveforms rendered on said graphical user interface has been selected by the user; (d) performing a measurement operation associated with said selected measurement icon on a measurement extent of said selected source waveform; and (e) displaying results of said measurement operation on said graphical user interface.
- 10. The method of claim 9, further comprising the steps of:(f) determining, prior to said step (d), a validity of said association of said selected measurement operation and said selected waveform.
- 11. A measurement invocation system for automatically performing a waveform measurement function when a measurement icon representing the waveform measurement function is graphically adjacent to a waveform displayed in a waveform display region of a graphical user interface operatively coupled to the measurement indication system, the invocation system comprising:a measurement toolbar manager configured to display on a graphical user interface one or more measurement icons each corresponding to a waveform measurement function, and to a identify which of said one or more measurement icons has been selected by the user; a waveform identifier configured to enable the user to graphically reposition said selected measurement icon from a first position to a second position adjacent to a source waveform and to determine a region of measurement invocation on the source waveform; and a measurement controller configured to invoke said selected measurement function on a measurement extent of said source waveform.
- 12. The system of claim 11, wherein said measurement toolbar manager is further constructed and arranged to determine which of one or more measurement functions corresponds to each said one or more measurement icons.
- 13. The system of claim 12, wherein said measurement toolbar manager is further constructed and arranged to determine which of said one or more measurement icons the cursor is dwelling over on the graphical user interface.
- 14. The system of claim 11, wherein said one or more measurement icons are arranged within a measurement toolbar region adjacent to the waveform display region of the graphical user interface.
- 15. The system of claim 14, wherein said measurement toolbar manager further comprises:means for enabling said selected measurement icon to be performed on said selected waveform.
- 16. The system of claim 14, wherein each said measurement icon comprises a bitmap that provides a pictorial description of said corresponding waveform measurement function.
- 17. The graphical system of claim 5, wherein said graphical control element comprises a measurement icon.
- 18. The graphical system of claim 17, wherein a plurality of descriptive measurement icons are displayed on the graphical user interface, each said plurality of descriptive measurement icons corresponding to a waveform measurement function, wherein said graphical system comprises:a waveform identifier configured to enable the user to graphically associate a selected measurement icon with a source waveform and for determining a point of measurement invocation on the source waveform; and a measurement controller configured to invoke said selected measurement function on a measurement extent of said source waveform when said association of said selected measurement and said source waveform is a valid association.
- 19. The graphical system of claim 18, wherein said waveform identifier enables the user to drag said selected measurement icon to different locations on the waveform display region to a position proximate to the source waveform.
