Claims
- 1. A method in a graphics display subsystem for providing internally timed time-varying properties in response to display attributes, the method comprising:
- storing, within at least one frame buffer, image frames to be displayed;
- within a display attribute memory in said graphics display subsystem, storing a display attribute in association with an identifier of a selected pixel group, said display attribute specifying an operation to be performed for said selected pixel group during transfer of image frames from said frame buffer to said display device;
- during transfer of a plurality of image frames from said at least one frame buffer to a display device:
- examining a pixel group identifier of each individual pixel within each of said plurality of image frames, wherein each image frame contains a plurality of pixels that each have a respective display property;
- in response to said display attribute stored within said display attribute memory, varying, during a selected time interval, the associated display property of pixels within said plurality of image frames that have a pixel group identifier that identifies the selected pixel group, wherein the associated display property is varied by a circuit within said graphics display subsystem and not an external central processing unit; and
- displaying the plurality of image frames within said display device during the selected time interval.
- 2. A method in a graphics display subsystem according to claim 1, said graphics display subsystem including two frame buffers from which pixel data is accessed for display, wherein pixel data within a single one of said two frame buffers can represent all pixels within an image frame, and wherein varying the associated display property comprises varying which of said two frame buffers is accessed for a particular image frame.
- 3. A method in a graphics display subsystem according to claim 1, said graphics display subsystem including two frame buffers from which pixel data is accessed for display, wherein pixel data within a single one of said two frame buffers can represent all pixels within an image frame, and wherein varying the associated display property comprises varying a percentage of the pixel data that is utilized from each of said two frame buffers to display a particular pixel in each image frame.
- 4. A method according to claim 1, wherein varying the associated display property comprises varying a brightness level of pixels within the selected pixel group.
- 5. A graphics display subsystem providing internally timed time-varying properties in response to display attributes, said graphics display subsystem comprising:
- at least one frame buffer for storing image frames to be displayed;
- a display device for displaying consecutive image frames, each image frame containing a plurality of pixels that each have a display property and a pixel group identifier;
- a display attribute memory that stores a display attribute in association with an identifier of a selected pixel group, said display attribute specifying an operation to be performed for said selected pixel group during transfer of image frames from said frame buffer to said display device; and
- a circuit for transferring image frames from said at least one frame buffer to the display device, wherein during a selected time interval the circuit varies, in response to said display attribute, the display property of only those pixels within an image frame being displayed on the display device that have a pixel group identifier that identifies the selected pixel group.
- 6. A graphics display subsystem according to claim 5, said at least one frame buffer comprising two frame buffers from which image frames are accessed for display, wherein pixel data within a single one of said two frame buffers can represent all pixels within an image frame, and wherein the display property varied for pixels within said selected pixel group is which frame buffer is accessed for a particular image frame.
- 7. A graphics display subsystem according to claim 5, said at least one frame buffer comprising two frame buffers from which pixel data is accessed for display, wherein pixel data within a single one of said two frame buffers can represent all pixels within an image frame, and wherein the display property varied for pixels within said selected pixel group is a percentage of the pixel data that is utilized from each of said two frame buffers to display a selected pixel in the image frame being displayed.
- 8. A graphics display subsystem according to claim 5, wherein the display property varied for pixels within said selected pixel group is a brightness level.
