The invention relates to grooved rolled threaded flange of special groove geometry for drum top. More particularly the invention relates to leakproofness of grooved rolled threaded flange of drum top on drop test.
2.1] The TITE SEAL GRT flange is unique because it is the only single gasket design with the special base geometry.
2.2] It is unique because it is the only single gasket flange supplied with both gaskets of the same material.
2.3] There is no chance of having compatibility problems that can potentially cause contamination of the contents of the drum.
2.4] The TITE SEAL GRT flange is unique because there is no change while die insertion tooling or adjustment or production slowdowns.
2.5] The Tite seal GRT flange has been sold to drum manufacturers in Europe and Asia.
3. Present System
I] Conventional flanges have flat surface on octagonal face, toward cylindrical wall of the flange, the flange gasket is fitting on this side.
II] Conventional flange which has a radius, which is formed during press operation (cupping); has a effect to shift (slide) uneven the gasket upward;
III] When flange is inserted by pressing the flange in drum top this gasket can flow in both directions, i.e horizontally towards octagonal edge and or upward along the cylindrical wall i.e neck of drum.
IV] Portion of the gasket which flows in the horizontal direction has a little contribution towards preventing leakages.
V] The portion of gasket going upward along the cylindrical portion is desired to climb upto portion where neck of drum top and flange neck i.e. cylindrical portion which does not curl are straight and nearly touching each other.
VI] While drop testing the drum is hold such that the chime portion which is near flange is facing downward, and by impact drum top it tries to bend and the flat octagonal portion of the flange and drum top sheet try to go away from each other since drum top gets bend inward; this creates a situation where flange gasket loose pressure and its sealability as it is no more filling the space between flange and drum top.
VII] This can be achieved only if gasket is prevented from expanding horizontally and thereby forcing the seal to move upwards along the cylindrical portion.
VIII] The inventor has tried to provide a groove on the flange base as shown in
IX] All synthetic gasket material normally used are for drum closures such as white EPDM, black Buna can be made to flow up in the desired direction irrespective of their friction co-efficient. Therefore gasket compatibilities with chemical content of fluid in drum is superior as compared to dual gasket or stepped gasket configurations.
X] Plain cylindrical gasket which can be satisfied by economic process by extrusion can be used. So special steps need to be moulded.
4. Special Geometry
4.1 Special geometry groove makes it difficult for flange gasket to flow towards octagonal edge and the GRT flange gasket under pressure now can only flow out in the upward direction along the cylindrical wall toward the neck of drum top and bend portion of GRT flange, which clamps the neck of drum top;
4.2 Additional Benefits:
1] GRT Flange is manufactured by technique of rolling threads which makes it stronger.
2] The bend of the base makes GRT flange acceptance to those drum manufacturers, who are using thick base. These manufacturers can switch over to GRT flange without much modification in insertion tooling, particularly chutes.
3] The leakproofness avoids use of extra gasket thereby making GRT flange more competitive;
4] Use of smaller gauge of steel going in the manufacture in GRT flange helps in weight reduction and higher utilization of steel thereby global benefits in conserving steel resources.
5] Special shape also adds to rigidity and stiffness of base.
6] Rolled Thread Grooved Flange as per sketch A is specially developed by TECHNOCRAFT INDUSTRIES (INDIA) LTD. To enhance safety and is particularly useful when hazardous chemicals are to be transported.
Special base Geometry not only imparts additional stiffness but drives gasket upwards when flange is inserted in a container top. This causes gasket to get lodged between drum head flared wall and flange neck shown in sketch B. In case of a crash if drum sheet were to separate from flange base, leakproofness shall be maintained by gasket as it sketch D unlike condition sketch C where gasket is no more able to prevent leakage as in conventional fitting. It is not necessary for gasket to be of dual materials. The entire gasket can be of any desired material, which is totally compatible to chemical filled.
There is no tooling change or adjustment requires to be done by drum manufacturer. The analysis of test experiment shows the performance of grooved flange has maximum vertical flow compared with horizontal flow of grooved flange and/or of horizontal and vertical flow in conventional flange.

The principal object of this invention is to provide leakproofness of the drums by rough handling simulated as in drop test.
Another object of the invention is to provide a specially designed flange for the drum top wherein the gasket is provided in between the flange and drum top which extends vertically which is a desired flow instead of horizontally.
Still further the object of the invention is to provide a roll threads inside the flange.
The further object of the invention is to provide less amount of material, saving of material thereby economy in the manufacture of the drum top.
