Claims
- 1. A compound of formula: ##STR7## wherein X.sup.1 is fluorine and X.sup.2 is hydrogen; R.sup.1 is a 4-alkenyl group having about 5 to 15 carbon atoms; n is the integer 0 or 1; one of the groups Y.sup.1 and Y.sup.2 is a single covalent bond, --COO--, --OOC--, --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --, and the other of the groups Y.sup.1 and Y.sup.2 is a single covalent bond; and each of rings A.sup.1 and A.sup.2 individually is trans-1,4-cyclohexylene, trans-1,4-cyclohexylene in which 2 non-adjacent CH.sub.2 groups are replaced by oxygen, or 1,4-phenylene.
- 2. The compound of claim 1, wherein ring A.sup.1 is trans-1,4-cyclohexylene or 1,4-phenylene.
- 3. The compound of claim 1, wherein ring A.sup.2 is trans-1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,4-phenylene, or when ring A.sup.1 is trans-1,4-cyclohexylene or 1,4-phenylene, ring A.sup.2 also can be trans-m-dioxane-2,5-diyl.
- 4. The compound of claim 1, wherein ring A.sup.1 is trans-1,4-cyclohexylene or 1,4-phenylene, and ring A.sup.2 is trans-1,4-cyclohexylene.
- 5. The compound of claim 1, having the formula: ##STR8## wherein X.sup.1 is fluorine; X.sup.2 is hydrogen; R.sup.1 is 4-pentenyl; and Y.sup.1 is --COO--, --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --, or a single covalent bond.
- 6. A liquid crystalline mixture having at least 2 components, wherein at least one of such components is a compound of formula: ##STR9## wherein X.sup.1 is fluorine and X.sup.2 is hydrogen; R.sup.1 is a 4-alkenyl group having about 5 to 15 carbon atoms; n is the integer 0 or 1; one of the groups Y.sup.1 and Y.sup.2 is a single covalent bond, --COO--, --OOC-- or --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --, and the other of the groups Y.sup.1 and Y.sup.2 is a single covalent bond; and each of rings A.sup.1 and A.sup.2 individually is trans-1,4-cyclohexylene, trans-1,4-cyclohexylene in which 2 non-adjacent CH.sub.2 groups are replaced by oxygen, or 1,4-phenylene.
- 7. An electro-optical cell comprising:
- (a) two plate means;
- (b) liquid crystal means disposed between the two plate means and including a compound of formula: ##STR10## wherein X.sup.1 is fluorine and X.sup.2 is hydrogen; R.sup.1 is a 4-alkenyl group having about 5 to 15 carbon atoms; n is the integer 0 or 1; one of the groups Y.sup.1 and Y.sup.2 is a single covalent bond, --COO--, --OOC-- or --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --, and the other of the groups Y.sup.1 and Y.sup.2 is a single covalent bond; and each of rings A.sup.1 and A.sup.2 individually is trans-1,4-cyclohexylene, trans-1,4-cyclohexylene in which 2 non-adjacent CH.sub.2 groups are replaced by oxygen, or 1,4-phenylene; and
- (c) means for applying an electrical potential to said plate means.
