Claims
- 1. A flame retardant composition comprising a thermoplastic or thermosetting resin and an amount of a halogen-substituted phthalimide effective to increase the flame retardancy of said resin, said phthalimide having the formula: ##STR39## wherein (a) R is selected from ##STR40## wherein R.sup.1 is alkyl of 1-8 carbons, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are H or CH.sub.3 with the proviso that R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are not the same, and R.sup.4 is alkyl of 1-12 carbons in which some of the carbons may be replaced by oxygen; ##STR41## where B is a trivalent alkyl group of 1 14 6 carbons, wherein B does not comprise a central carbon atom bonded to four other carbons, R.sup.5, R.sup.6, R.sup.7 and R.sup.8 are H or CH.sub.3 with the proviso that in the pairs R.sup.2 and R.sup.3, R.sup.5 and R.sup.6, and R.sup.7 and R.sup.8, both members are not the same; ##STR42## where R.sup.9 is alkyl of 1 to 10 carbons, aryl, or --(CH.sub.2).sub.f --, R.sup.10 and R.sup.11 may independently by H or CH.sub.3 with the proviso that R.sup.10 and R.sup.11 are not the same, b and c are independently 0 to 100, and d, e and f are independently 0 to 6; ##STR43## where R.sup.12, R.sup.13 and R.sup.14 are ##STR44## and g=1 to 1000 with the proviso that for each of R.sup.12, R.sup.13 and R.sup.14, g may or may not have the same value; ##STR45## where h=1 to 6; ##STR46## where j=1 to 500 and ##STR47## where k=0 to 30; (b) A is Cl or Br;
- (c) i is 1 to 4;
- (d) q is an integer of 1 to 6;
- (e) L=1 to 2;
- (f) m and n independently vary from 0 to 50 with the proviso that both cannot be zero; and
- (g) v, w, x, y, z and a independently vary from 0 to 25 with the proviso that for each of the pairs, v and w, x and y, and z and a, both members cannot be zero.
- 2. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the weight ratio of resin to phthalimide is in the range of about 100:1 to about 3:1.
- 3. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the weight ratio of resin to phthalimide is in the range of about 20:1 to 4:1.
- 4. A composition according to claim 1 wherein said resin is selected from the group consisting of hydrocarbon polymers including saturated, unsaturated, linear, atactic, crystalline or non-linear amorphous polymers, copolymers, terpolymers, polyethylene, polypropylene, poly(4-methyl pentene-1), polybutene-1, polystyrene, styrene-butadiene rubber, butyl rubber, natural rubber, polyisobutylen, ethylene-propylene-copolymer, cis-1-4-polyisoprene, ethylene-propylene-dicyclopentadiene terpolymer, and blends thereof; nonhydrocarbon polymers such as the unsaturated polyesters; drying and non-drying alkyd resins; linear-saturated polyesters, including poly(ethylene terephthalate), poly-(1,4-cyclohexanedimethylene terephthalate) and poly(1,4-butylene terephthalate); polyurethanes; poly(alkylene oxides), including poly(ethylene oxide), poly (propylene oxide); poly(arylene oxides) including poly(phenylene oxide); polyamides, including nylon and perlon-L; poly(vinyl alkyl ethers), including poly-(vinyl methyl ether); ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers; poly(ethyl acrylate), poly(ethyl methacrylate); polysulfones; epoxy resins; butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymers; butadiene-acrylonitrile-styrene terpolymers; plasticized poly(vinyl chloride).
- 5. A composition according to claim 1 wherein said resin is a polyphenylene ether resin.
- 6. A composition according to claim 4 wherein said polyphenylene ether resin is selected from the group consisting of polyphenylene ether homopolymers, polyphenylene ether copolymers, and blends of polyphenylene ether with a vinyl aromatic resin.
- 7. A flame retardant composition according to claim 1 wherein A is Br, i is 4, q is 1 to 6, and R is selected from ##STR48## wherein R.sup.1 is --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 -- or ##STR49## R.sup.4 is CH.sub.3 OCH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --, CH.sub.3 O(CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 O)CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --, C.sub.2 H.sub.5 OCH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --, C.sub.2 H.sub.5 O(CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 O)CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --, C.sub.4 H.sub.9 OCH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --, or C.sub.4 H.sub.9 O(CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 O)--CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --; ##STR50## wherein B is ##STR51## ##STR52## wherein R.sup.10 =H, R.sup.11 =CH.sub.3, b or c but not both equal zero; ##STR53## wherein R.sup.12, R.sup.13 and R.sup.14 are ##STR54## and g may vary from 1 to 50 in each of R.sup.12, R.sup.13 and R.sup.14 ; ##STR55## where h=2 to 3; and g=1to 50; ##STR56## where j=1 to 50, and g=1 to 50; and ##STR57## where k=0 to 16.
- 8. A flame retardant composition according to claim 1 wherein q is 1 to 3, i is 4, and R.sup.1 and R.sup.4 are ##STR58##
- 9. A method for increasing the flame retardancy of a thermoplastic or thermosetting resin, comprising blending with said resin a flame retarding amount of a halogenated phthalimide having the formula: ##STR59## wherein ##STR60## wherein R.sup.1 is alkyl of 1-8 carbons, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are H or CH.sub.3 with the proviso that R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are not the same, and R.sup.4 is alkyl of 1-12 carbons in which some of the carbons may be replaced by oxygen; ##STR61## where B is a trivalent alkyl group of 1-6 carbons, wherein B does not comprise a central carbon atom bonded to four other carbons, R.sup.5, R.sup.6, R.sup.7 and R.sup.8 are H or CH.sub.3 with the proviso that in the pairs R.sup.2 and R.sup.3, R.sup.5 and R.sup.6, and R.sup.7 and R.sup.8, both members are not the same; ##STR62## where R.sup.9 is alkyl of 1 to 10 carbons, aryl, or --(CH.sub.2).sub.f --, R.sup.10 and R.sup.11 may be independently be H or CH.sub.3 with the proviso that R.sup.10 and R.sup.11 are not the same, b and c are independently 0 to 100, and d, e and f are independently 0 to 6; ##STR63## where R.sup.12, R.sup.13 and R.sup.14 are ##STR64## and g=1 to 1000 with the proviso that for each of R.sup.12, R.sup.13 and R.sup.14, g may or may not have the same value; ##STR65## where h=1 to 6; where j =1to 500 and ##STR66## ##STR67## where k=0 to 30; (b) A is Cl or Br;
- (c) i is 1 to 4;
- (d) q is an integer of 1 to 6;
- (e) L=1 to 2;
- (f) m and n independently vary from 0 to 50 with the proviso that both cannot be zero; and
- (g) v, w, x, y, z and a independently vary from 0 to 25 with the proviso that for each of the pairs, v and w, x and y, and z and a, both members cannot be zero.
- 10. A method of improving the flow characteristics and moldability of a thermoplastic resin during melt processing, comprising blending with said resin an effective amount of a halogenated phthalimide having the formula: ##STR68## wherein (a) R is selected from ##STR69## wherein R.sup.1 is alkyl of 1-8 carbons, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are H or CH.sub.3 with the proviso that R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are not the same, and R.sup.4 is alkyl of 1-12 carbons in which some of the carbons may be replaced by oxygen; ##STR70## where Bis a trivalent alkyl group of 1-6 carbons, wherein B does not comprise a central carbon atom bonded to four other carbons, R.sup.5, R.sup.6, R.sup.7 and R.sup.8 are H or CH.sub.3 with the proviso that in the pairs R.sup.2 and R.sup.3, R.sup.5 and R.sup.6, and R.sup.7 and R.sup.8, both members are not the same; ##STR71## where R.sup.9 is alkyl of 1 to 10 carbons, aryl, or --(CH.sub.2).sub.f --, R.sup.10 and R.sup.11 may independently be H or CH.sub.3 with the proviso that R.sup.10 and R.sup.11 are not the same, b and c are independently 0 to 100, and d, e and f are independently 0 to 6; ##STR72## where R.sup.12, R.sup.13 and R.sup.14 are ##STR73## and g=1 to 1000 with the proviso that for each of R.sup.12, R.sup.13 and R.sup.14, g may or may not have the same value; ##STR74## where h=1 to 6; ##STR75## where j=1 to 500 and ##STR76## whnere k=0 to 30; (b) A is Cl or Br;
- (c) i is 1 to 4;
- (d) q is an integer of 1 to 6;
- (e) L=1 to 2;
- (f) m and n is independently vary from 0 to 50 with the proviso that both cannot be zero; and
- (g) v, w, x, y, z and a independently vary from 0 to 25 with the proviso that for each of the pairs, v and w, x and y, and z and a, both members cannot be zero.

This application is a division of copending application Ser. No. 173,487, filed Mar. 25, 1988, now U.S. Pat. No. 4,904,795.
This application is related to copending U.S. patent application Ser. No. 896,896, filed Aug. 15, 1986 by Ronald F. Lovenguth for "Tetrahalophthalate Esters as Flame Retardants for Polyphenylene Ether Resins," now U.S. Pat. No. 4,764,550, which in turn is a continuation-in-part of U.S. application Ser. No. 777,043, filed Sept. 17, 1985, now abandoned. This application is also related to International Application No. PCT/US80/01771, filed in the United States on Aug. 27, 1986 by the same inventor identified above. This application is also related to U.S. Ser. No. 173,518 for "Halogenated Polyester Flame Retardants for Polyphenylene Ether Resins" and U.S. Ser. No. 173,516, now U.S. Pat. No. 4,927,873, for "Polyhalophenyl Ester Flame Retardants for Polyphenylene Ether Resins," both filed concurrently herewith. The disclosure of these related applications are incorporated herein by reference. The claimed invention of the present application and the subject matter of the above-identified applications were commonly owned or subject to an obligation of assignment to the same entity at the time the present invention was made.
