Claims
- 1. A keyboard for use with an electronic device, comprising:
keys arranged in a plurality of rows and positioned in a housing, wherein the keys are distributed substantially symmetrically with respect to the housing, wherein a key from the first row is aligned with a key from the second row relative to a vertical reference.
- 2. The keyboard of claim 1, wherein the key in the second row is aligned with a key in the third row relative to the vertical reference.
- 3. The keyboard of claim 1, wherein each key from the first row is vertically aligned with a key from the second row.
- 4. The keyboard of claim 3, wherein the vertical alignment of keys results in a non-staggered key arrangement.
- 5. The keyboard of claim 1, wherein the distribution of the keys is symmetrical with respect to the face of the housing.
- 6. The keyboard of claim 1, wherein the distribution of the keys is symmetrical with respect to a spatial dimension of the housing.
- 7. The keyboard of claim 1, wherein the distribution of the keys is symmetrical with respect to two spatial dimensions of the housing.
- 8. The keyboard of claim 1, wherein a second vertical reference bisects the face of the housing, wherein the keys are distributed symmetrically with respect to the second vertical reference.
- 9. The keyboard of claim 1, wherein at least one of the keys is an alt key, wherein the location of the alt key is substantially horizontally adjacent to a letter Z key.
- 10. The keyboard of claim 1, wherein at least one of the keys is an alt key, wherein the location of the alt key is substantially vertically adjacent to a letter A key.
- 11. The keyboard of claim 1, wherein at least one of the keys is an alt key, wherein the location of the alt key is adjacent to a letter A key and a letter Z key.
- 12. The keyboard of claim 1, wherein the shape of the keys is substantially oval-shaped.
- 13. The keyboard of claim 1, wherein the shape of the keys is oval-shaped.
- 14. The keyboard of claim 1, wherein the shape of the keys is substantially circular-shaped.
- 15. The keyboard of claim 1, wherein the shape of the keys is circular-shaped.
- 16. The keyboard of claim 1, wherein the shape of the keys is substantially square-shaped.
- 17. The keyboard of claim 1, wherein the shape of the keys is square-shaped.
- 18. The keyboard of claim 1, wherein the keyboard has a QWERTY keyboard layout.
- 19. The keyboard of claim 1, wherein the keyboard has a DVORAK keyboard layout.
- 20. The keyboard of claim 1, said keys comprising a first set of keys and a second set of keys, wherein the first set of keys is positioned at a first predetermined angle relative to a second vertical reference and the second set of keys is positioned at a second predetermined angle relative to the second vertical reference.
- 21. The keyboard of claim 1, wherein the keyboard resides on the electronic device.
- 22. The keyboard of claim 1, wherein the electronic device comprises a display operatively associated with the keyboard.
- 23. The keyboard of claim 22, wherein the display is positioned adjacent to the keyboard.
- 24. The keyboard of claim 23, wherein the position of the display relative to the keyboard is adjustable.
- 25. The keyboard of claim 24, wherein the keyboard and display are arranged on opposing sides of a clamshell arrangement such that the position of the display is adjustable between open and closed positions of the clamshell arrangement through a hinge.
- 26. The keyboard of claim 1, wherein the electronic device is a handheld device.
- 27. The keyboard of claim 1, wherein the electronic device is a personal digital assistant (PDA).
- 28. The keyboard of claim 1, wherein the electronic device is a cellular telephone.
- 29. The keyboard of claim 1, wherein the electronic device is a wireless communications device.
- 30. The keyboard of claim 1, wherein the electronic device is a handheld two-way wireless communications device.
- 31. The keyboard of claim 1, wherein the electronic device has an auxiliary input device positioned in relative proximity to the keyboard.
- 32. The keyboard of claim 1, wherein the first row of keys, the second row of keys and the third row of keys respectively define a first arc having a first radius, a second arc having a second radius and a third arc having a third radius, along which the keys are positioned.
- 33. The keyboard of claim 1, wherein the electronic device is optimally configured for use with the thumbs of a user.
- 34. A wireless mobile communications device, comprising:
a keyboard, wherein the keyboard includes keys arranged in a plurality of rows and positioned in a housing of the device, wherein the keys are distributed substantially symmetrically with respect to the housing, wherein a key from the first row is aligned with a key from the second row relative to a vertical reference; a display operatively associated with the keyboard; and a microprocessor to control the operation of the device.
- 35. A data communications signal containing an electronic message transmitted from a wireless mobile communications device, wherein the device contains a keyboard, said keyboard comprising keys arranged in a plurality of rows and positioned in a housing, wherein the keys are distributed substantially symmetrically with respect to the housing, wherein a key from the first row is aligned with a key from the second row relative to a vertical reference.
