Claims
- 1. A hand-held labeling machine comprising; a housing having a manually engageable handle, the housing having means for holding a label supply roll of a composite web having labels releaseably adhered to a backing strip, means for printing on a label at a printing position, means for peeling the printed labels from the backing strip, means disposed adjacent the peeling means for applying printed labels, means for advancing the web to peel a printed label from the backing strip at the peeling means and to advance the printed label into label applying relationship with the label applying means and to advance another label into the printing position, means for entering selected data to be printed, the printing means including a thermographic print head having a plurality of individually selectable print elements for printing on a label at the printing position, means coupled to said data entering means for electrically processing the selected data and energizing the individual print elements in a predetermined sequence determined by the selected data to print data on the label, said processing means including memory means of the type requiring the continuous application of electrical energy thereto to maintain the memory function, circuit means including an on-off switch electrically connected to a first source of electrical energy for automatically applying electrical energy from said first source of electrical energy to said printing means and said processing means when said on-off switch is one and for automatically applying electrical energy from said first source to said memory means when said on-off switch is off, said circuit means further including means electrically coupled to a second source of electrical energy for automatically applying electrical energy from said second source of electrical energy to said memory means when said first source is inoperative or disconnected from said circuit means.
- 2. A hand-held labeling machine as recited in claim 1 wherein said handle is removably attached to a portion of said housing and said first source of electrical energy is disposed in said handle.
- 3. A hand-held labelling machine as recited in claim 1 further including isolation means for isolating said memory means so that said second source of electrical energy is operative to provide electrical energy only to said memory means.
- 4. A hand-held labeling machine as recited in claim 1, wherein the data entry means includes a keyboard mounted on the housing.
- 5. A hand-held labeling machine as recited in claim 1, wherein the on-off switch is mounted on the housing spaced apart from said handle.
- 6. A hand-held labeling machine as recited in claim 1, wherein the second source of electrical energy is disposed within the housing.
- 7. A hand-held labeling machine as recited in claim 6, wherein said first source of electrical energy includes a rechargeable battery.
- 8. A hand-held labeling machine as recited in claim 6, wherein the second source of electrical energy includes a lithium battery.
- 9. A hand-held labeling machine as recited in claim 1, wherein said first source of electrical energy includes a rechargeable battery.
- 10. A hand-held labeling machine as recited in claim 1, wherein the second source of electrical energy includes a lithium battery.
- 11. A hand-held labeling machine as recited in claim 10, wherein the lithium battery is disposed in the housing spaced apart from said handle.
- 12. A hand-held labeling machine as recited in claim 1, wherein the second source of electrical energy is disposed in the housing spaced apart from said handle.
