Claims
- 1. An eddy current probe comprising:
- a) a support member;
- b) a generally-toroidal-shaped first resilient member having a first coefficient of elasticity, a generally longitudinal axis, and an exterior surface, wherein said exterior surface includes a generally radially-inward-facing portion surrounding a bore, a generally radially-outward-facing portion, and generally opposite-facing first and second lateral portions each connected to said radially-inward-facing portion and said radially-outward-facing portion, and wherein said first lateral portion contacts said support member;
- c) an elastic membrane extending over generally the entire bore and having opposing first and second surfaces, wherein said first surface contacts said second lateral portion and is unattached to said radially-inward-facing portion of said exterior surface of said first resilient member;
- d) a second resilient member having a second coefficient of elasticity greater than said first coefficient of elasticity, wherein said second resilient member is disposed in the bore, is unattached to said first resilient member, and has generally opposing first and second sides, and wherein said first side contacts said second surface of said elastic membrane; and
- e) a flexible eddy-current sensing coil overlying a portion of said second side of said second resilient member.
- 2. The eddy current probe of claim 1, wherein said support member is a base plate having opposing first and second faces and wherein said first lateral portion of said exterior surface of said first resilient member contacts and is attached to said first face of said base plate.
- 3. The eddy current probe of claim 2, wherein said first resilient member comprises a gel ring generally coaxially aligned with said longitudinal axis and attached to said first face of said base plate.
- 4. The eddy current probe of claim 3, wherein said first resilient member also comprises a foam ring generally coaxially aligned with said longitudinal axis and longitudinally attached to said gel ring.
- 5. The eddy current probe of claim 4, wherein said first resilient member further comprises an annular rubber contact shield generally coaxially aligned with said longitudinal axis and longitudinally attached to said foam ring, wherein said foam ring is longitudinally disposed between said gel ring and said annular rubber contact shield, and wherein said first surface of said elastic membrane is attached to said annular rubber contact shield.
- 6. The eddy current probe of claim 5, wherein said gel ring, said foam ring, and said annular rubber contact shield are generally concentric.
- 7. The eddy current probe of claim 3, wherein said first resilient member also comprises a foam ring generally coaxially aligned with said longitudinal axis and radially attached to said gel ring.
- 8. The eddy current probe of claim 7, wherein the outer diameter of said foam ring is generally equal to the inner diameter of said gel ring.
- 9. The eddy current probe of claim 7, wherein the inner diameter of said foam ring is generally equal to the outer diameter of said gel ring.
- 10. The eddy current probe of claim 2, wherein said first surface of said elastic membrane is attached to said second lateral portion of said exterior surface of said first resilient member.
- 11. The eddy current probe of claim 10, wherein said elastic membrane is also attached to said base plate.
- 12. The eddy current probe of claim 2, wherein said eddy-current sensing coil has a generally rectangular shape with a lengthwise axis and a length-to-width ratio of at least three, and wherein said eddy-current sensing coil is the only eddy-current sensing coil overlying said second side of said second resilient member.
- 13. The eddy current probe of claim 12, wherein said second resilient member has a generally ellipsoidal shape having a major axis aligned generally parallel to said lengthwise axis of said eddy-current sensing coil.
- 14. The eddy current probe of claim 12, wherein said eddy-current sensing coil is rotatably attached to said base plate and is rotatable generally about said longitudinal axis, and also including means for measuring the angle of rotation of said lengthwise axis of said eddy-current sensing coil about said longitudinal axis with respect to a reference direction which is fixed with respect to said base plate.
- 15. The eddy current probe of claim 2, also including a flexible polyimide film containing flexible electric leads, wherein said eddy-current sensing coil is disposed in said polyimide film and connected to said electric leads.
- 16. The eddy current probe of claim 15, wherein said polyimide film is attached to said base plate.
- 17. The eddy current probe of claim 16, also including a polyamide mesh fabric overlying said polyimide film.
- 18. The eddy current probe of claim 2, also including a signal preamplifier attached to said second face of said base plate and electrically connected to said eddy-current sensing coil.
