Claims
- 1. A microphone assembly for inputting voice signals and dictation control signals into a personal computer, the microphone assembly comprising:
a hand microphone which includes:
(a) microphone means for generating an analog audio signal; (b) a plurality of first manually-actuatable switches; (c) first means for selectively generating a plurality of first control signal levels in response to actuation of said first switches; (d) a plurality of second manually-actuatable switches; and (e) second means for selectively generating a plurality of second control signal levels in response to actuation of said second switches; first connection means for connecting said hand microphone to said personal computer and for providing said analog audio signal generated by said microphone means as an audio input signal to a sound card component of said personal computer; second connection means for connecting said hand microphone to said game port of said personal computer and for providing said first control signal levels to said game port as an X-axis input signal; and third connection means for connecting said hand microphone to said game port of said personal computer and for providing said second control signal levels to said game port as a Y-axis input signal.
- 2. A microphone assembly according to claim 1, wherein said hand microphone also includes a sliding member for selectively actuating at least some of said second switches.
- 3. A microphone assembly according to claim 1, wherein said hand microphone also includes a speaker and the apparatus further comprises fourth connection means for connecting said hand microphone to said personal computer and for transmitting an audio output signal from said sound card to said hand microphone, said hand microphone also including means for applying said audio output signal to drive said speaker.
- 4. A microphone assembly according to claim 3, wherein said first connection means, said second connection means, said third connection means and said fourth connection means are collectively constituted by:
an adapter module adapted to be mounted to said game port of said personal computer; a first signal transmission cord interconnecting said hand microphone and said adaptor module; a second signal transmission cord interconnecting said adaptor module and an audio input port of said personal computer; and a third signal transmission cord interconnecting said adaptor module and an audio output port of said personal computer.
- 5. A microphone assembly according to claim 1, wherein said first means of said hand microphone includes a first constant current source and a first resistor network connected to the first constant current source, and said second means of said hand microphone includes a second constant current source and a second resistor network connected to the second constant current source.
- 6. Apparatus for recording voice signals in digital form, comprising:
a personal computer including a data storage device, a game port for receiving an X-axis input signal and a Y-axis input signal, and a sound card for converting an analog audio input signal into a digitized audio signal to be stored in the data storage device; a hand microphone including:
(a) microphone means for generating an analog audio signal; (b) a plurality of first manually-actuatable switches; (c) first means for selectively generating a plurality of first control signal levels in response to actuation of said first switches; (d) a plurality of second manually-actuatable switches; and (e) second means for selectively generating a plurality of second control signal levels in response to actuation of said second switches; first connection means, interconnecting said hand microphone and said personal computer, for providing said analog audio signal generated by said microphone means as an audio input signal to said sound card; second connection means, interconnecting said hand microphone and said personal computer, for providing said first control signal levels to said game port of said personal computer as an X-axis input signal; and third connection means, interconnecting said hand microphone and said personal computer, for providing said second control levels to said game port of said personal computer as a Y-axis input signal.
- 7. Apparatus according to claim 6, wherein said hand microphone also includes a sliding member for selectively actuating at least some of said second switches.
- 8. Apparatus according to claim 6, wherein said hand microphone also includes a speaker and the apparatus further comprises fourth connection means, interconnecting said hand microphone and said personal computer, for transmitting an audio output signal from said sound card to said hand microphone, said hand microphone also including means for applying said audio output signal to drive said speaker.
- 9. Apparatus according to claim 8, wherein said first connection means, said second connection means, said third connection means and said fourth connection means are collectively constituted by:
an adapter module mounted to said game port of said personal computer; a first signal transmission cord interconnecting said hand microphone and said adaptor module; a second signal transmission cord interconnecting said adaptor module and an audio input port of said personal computer; and a third signal transmission cord interconnecting said adaptor module and an audio output port of said personal computer.
- 10. Apparatus according to claim 6, wherein said first means of said hand microphone includes a first constant current source and a first resistor network connected to the first constant current source, and said second means of said hand microphone includes a second constant current source and a second resistor network connected to the second constant current source.
- 11. A peripheral device for use with a personal computer, comprising:
an adaptor module for being mounted on a game port of the personal computer, said adaptor module including a first pin for transmitting a signal to an X-axis input of the game port and a second pin for transmitting a signal to a Y-axis input of the game port; a connection cord for connecting said adaptor module to an audio input port of the personal computer; a hand microphone; and signal path means for providing signal paths between said hand microphone and said adaptor module; wherein said hand microphone includes:
means for generating an analog audio signal transmitted to said connection cord via said signal path means and said adaptor module; first control means for generating a first analog control signal level transmitted to said first pin of said adaptor module via said signal path means; and second control means for generating a second analog control signal level transmitted to said second pin of said adaptor module via said signal path means.
- 12. A peripheral device according to claim 11, wherein said first control means of said hand microphone includes a first plurality of manually-actuatable switches and said second control means of said hand microphone includes a second plurality of manually-actuatable switches.
- 13. A peripheral device according to claim 11, wherein said signal path means includes a second connection cord which has plural conductors for electrically connecting said hand microphone to said adaptor module.
- 14. A peripheral device according to claim 13, wherein said hand microphone also includes a speaker, and the peripheral device further comprises a third connection cord for connecting said adaptor module to an audio output port of the personal computer for receiving an audio signal to be audibly reproduced by said speaker.
- 15. A method of controlling dictation functions performed by a personal computer, the method comprising the steps of:
providing a hand microphone; using the hand microphone to generate a first analog control signal level and a second analog control signal level that is separate from the first analog control signal level; applying the first analog control signal level as an X-axis input to a game port of the personal computer; and applying the second analog control signal level as a Y-axis input to the game port of the personal computer.
- 16. A method according to claim 15, wherein said step of using the hand microphone to generate the first and second analog control signal levels includes actuating manually-actuatable switches provided on the hand microphone.
- 17. A method according to claim 15, wherein said applying steps include connecting the hand microphone to the personal computer by means of a connection card and an adapter module.
