Claims
- 1. A putter type golf club including a club head having a ball striking face lying in a first plane and having a bottom surface in a second plane perpendicular to said first plane, and a shaft connected to the club head having a front edge toward the target direction, wherein the improvement comprises: an elongated handle, having a generally oval, cross-sectional shape including rounded front and rear edges and relatively flat, planer surfaces between said edges; and the elongated axis of said oval, cross-sectional shape of said handle being perpendicular to the plane of said ball striking face.
- 2. The putter type golf club of claim 1 wherein said handle is further defined by a front edge having a first radius and a rear edge having a second smaller radius.
- 3. The putter type golf club of claim 1 wherein said handle is further defined by a flat upper surface parallel to the bottom surface of said club head.
- 4. The putter type golf club of claim 1 wherein said handle further includes a flat upper surface with alignment indicia thereon, for aligning said club head in a preselected direction toward an intended target.
- 5. The putter type golf club of claim 4 wherein said alignment indicia forms a cross-hair with a first alignment line bisecting said oval shaped handle and a second alignment line perpendicular to said first alignment line and parallel to said ball striking face.
- 6. The putter type golf club of claim 1 wherein said handle is further defined by an oval shape having front and said rear edges with the same radius.
- 7. The putter type golf club of claim 1 wherein the shaft is connected approximate the front edge of said handle.
- 8. The putter type golf club of claim 6 wherein said oval is elliptical.
- 9. The putter type golf club of claim 1 wherein the elongated depth of said handle is at least 1.5 times longer than the width of the handle.
- 10. The putter type golf club of claim 1 wherein said handle is further defined as having a length approximately half the overall length of the golf club.
- 11. The putter type golf club of claim 1 wherein said handle is further defined as being longer in a direction perpendicular to the ball striking face than in a direction parallel to the ball striking face in a ratio greater than 3 to 2.
- 12. A putter type golf club including a club head having a ball striking face lying in a first plane and a shaft connected to the club head, wherein the improvement comprises:
an elongated handle, having a cross-sectional configuration with a first length in a direction perpendicular to the plane of said ball striking face and a second length in a direction parallel to the plane of said ball striking face; the first length being greater than the second length; and said handle including a top surface with alignment indicia thereon, including at least one alignment line in said direction perpendicular to the plane of said ball striking face.
- 13. The putter type golf club of claim 12 wherein said handle is further defined by a front edge having a first radius and a rear edge having a second smaller radius.
- 14. The putter type golf club of claim 12 wherein said handle is further defined by a flat upper surface parallel to the bottom surface of said club head.
- 15. The putter type golf club of claim 12 wherein said handle is further defined as having a length approximately half the overall length of the golf club.
- 16. The putter type golf club of claim 12 wherein said handle is further defined as being longer in a direction perpendicular to the ball striking face than in a direction parallel to the ball striking face in a ratio greater than 3 to 2.
- 17. A putter type golf club including a club head having a ball striking face lying in a first plane and a shaft connected to the club head, wherein the improvement comprises: an elongated handle, having a cross-sectional configuration with a first length in a direction perpendicular to the plane of said ball striking face and a second length in a direction parallel to the plane of said ball striking face; the first length being greater than the second length by a ratio of at least 3 to 2.
- 18. The putter type golf club of claim 17 wherein said handle cross-sectional configuration is generally oval including rounded front and rear edges and relatively flat, planer surfaces between said edges; and the longer axis of said oval being perpendicular to the plane of said ball striking face.
- 19. The putter type golf club of claim 17 wherein said handle cross-sectional configuration is generally elliptical including rounded front and rear edges and curved side surfaces between said edges; and the longer axis of said ellipse being perpendicular to the plane of said ball striking face.
- 20. A method of putting using a putter type golf club including a club head having a ball striking face lying in a first plane and having a bottom surface in a second plane perpendicular to said first plane, a shaft connected to the club head having a front edge toward the target direction, and an elongated handle which is longer in depth direction perpendicular to the plane of said ball striking face than in the width direction parallel to the plane of the ball striking face; wherein a user grips the handle with their non-dominant hand approximate the top front edge and their dominant hand on the rear edge such that the hands are separated and the dominant hand is offset behind the shaft.
