Claims
- 1. A device for compacting empty beverage cans comprising:
- electric motor means having an output shaft;
- gear means coacting with the output shaft of said electric motor means;
- means for receiving a can that has a mid-section and end regions with respective end faces;
- means for delivering the can to said receiving means;
- an operation site cooperable with said receiving means such that said receiving means locates the can delivered by the delivering means to the operation site;
- trap door means at said operation site having an open position wherein an exit hole is established, and a closed position wherein said exit hole is closed;
- abutment means for providing an abutment surface for said can at said operation site;
- a first arm means drivingly connected to said gear means and being movable across said operation site toward said abutment surface to compress the mid-section of said can against and abutment surface, said first arm means being movable away from said abutment surface after the mid-section of said can has been compressed against said abutment surface;
- second and third arm means drivingly connected to said gear means and being movable across said operation site toward said abutment surface to compress the respective opposite end regions of said can against said abutment surface causing the respective end faces of said can to lie substantially parallel to said abutment surface, said second and third arm means being movable away from said abutment surface after the respective end regions of said can have been compressed against said abutment surface;
- said gear means coacting with said first, second and third arm means to provide a synchronized movement of said second and third arm means toward and away from said abutment surface, and said gear means coordinating movement of said first arm means with the movement of said second and third arm means;
- reciprocally operative means drivingly connected to said gear means for moving said trap door means from said open position to said closed position and vice versa, said reciprocally operative means moving said trap door means to said open position to enable said can to fall through said exit hole upon movement of one of said arm means away from said abutment surface, said reciprocally operative means moving said trap door means to said closed position after said trap door means has been in said open position; and
- further including support means for said first, second and third arm means and wherein said gear means includes a second gear and a third gear, the driving connection between said second arm means and said gear means includes a first link means having a first end and an opposite end, said second arm means having one end hinge connected to said support means and an opposite end pivotally joined to the first end of said first link means, the opposite end of said first link means being pivotally connected to said second gear at a predetermined peripheral location of said second gear such that rotation of said second gear enables said first link means to move said second arm means toward and away from said abutment surface; and
- the driving connection between said third arm means and said gear means includes a second link means having a first end and an opposite end, said third arm means having one end hinge connected to said support means and an opposite end pivotally joined to the first end of said second link means, the opposite end of said second link means being pivotally connected to said third gear at a predetermined peripheral location of said third gear such that rotation of said third gear enables said second link means to move said third arm means towards and away from said abutment surface.
- 2. A compacting device according to claim 1 including slide means located at the predetermined peripheral location of said third gear and wherein said first arm means is of an angled two-legged configuration, one said leg having one free end pivotally connected to said support means and an opposite end region provided with slot means for interacting with said slide means, and the other said leg of said first arm means extending from said opposite end region towards said abutment surface.
- 3. A compacting device according to claim 1, wherein said gear means comprises a first gear having a first radius and second and third gears each having a second larger radius than said first radius, said first gear being connected to the output shaft of said electric motor, and said second and third gears rotating at the same velocity and in opposite directions.
- 4. A compacting device according to claim 1 further comprising means on said first, second and third arm means for physically contacting said can and having a predetermined overall surface area to compact said can upon movement against said can when said can is at said operation site.
- 5. A compacting device according to claim 1 including control means for controlling operation of said device at a continuous first cycle rate.
- 6. A compacting device according to claim 1 including a pressure sensing means connected to said abutment surface to detect compressive forces acting on said abutment surface when said can is compacted.
- 7. A device for compacting empty beverage cans comprising:
- electric motor means having an output shaft;
- gear means coacting with the output shaft of said electric motor means;
- means for receiving a can that has a mid-section and end regions with respective end faces;
- means for delivering the can to said receiving means;
- an operation site cooperable with said receiving means such that said receiving means locates the can delivered by the delivering means to the operation site;
- trap door means at said operation site having an open position wherein an exit hole is established, and a closed position wherein said exit hole is closed;
- abutment means for providing an abutment surface for said can at said operation site;
- a first arm means drivingly connected to said gear means and being movable across said operation site toward said abutment surface to compress the mid-section of said can against said abutment surface, said first arm means being movable by said gear means away from said abutment surface after the mid-section of said can has been compressed against said abutment surface;
- second and third arm means drivingly connected to said gear means and being movable across said operation site toward said abutment surface to compress the respective opposite end regions of said can against said abutment surface causing the respective end faces of said can to lie substantially parallel to said abutment surface, said second and third arm means being movable by said gear means away from said abutment surface after the respective end regions of said can have been compressed against said abutment surface;
- said gear means coacting with said first, second and third arm means to provide a synchronized movement of said second and third arm means toward and away from said abutment surface, and said gear means coordinating movement of said first arm means with the movement of said second and third arm means;
- reciprocally operative means drivingly connected to said gear means for moving said trap door means from said open position to said closed position and vice versa, said reciprocally operative means moving said trap door means to said open position to enable said can to fall through said exit hole upon movement of one of said arm means away from said abutment surface, said reciprocally operative means moving said trap door means to said closed position after said trap door means has been in said open position; and
- wherein said gear means includes a second and third gear and said second and third gears have a bottom side and said reciprocally operative means includes cam means on said trap door means and a pin means attached to the bottom side of one of said second and third gears for interacting with said pin means.
- 8. A device for compacting empty beverage cans comprising:
- electric motor means having an output shaft;
- gear means coacting with the output shaft of said electric motor means;
- means for receiving a can that has a mid-section and end regions with respective end faces;
- means for delivering the can to said receiving means;
- an operation site cooperable with said receiving means such that said receiving means locates the can delivered by the delivering means to the operation site;
- trap door means at said operation site having an open position wherein an exit hole is established, and a closed position wherein said exit hole is closed;
- abutment means for providing an abutment surface for said can at said operation site;
- a first arm means drivingly connected to said gear means and being movable across said operation site toward said abutment surface to compress the mid-section of said can against said abutment surface, said first arm means being movable by said gear means away from said abutment surface after the mid-section of said can has been compressed against said abutment surface;
- second and third arm means drivingly connected to said gear means and being movable across said operation site toward said abutment surface to compress the respective opposite end regions of said can against said abutment surface causing the respective end faces of said can to lie substantially parallel to said abutment surface, said second and third arm means being movable by said gear means away from said abutment surface after the respective end regions of said can have been compressed against said abutment surface;
- said gear means coacting with said first, second and third arm means to provide a synchronized movement of said second and third arm means toward and away from said abutment surface, and said gear means coordinating movement of said first arm means with the movement of said second and third arm means; and
- reciprocally operative means drivingly connected to said gear means for moving said trap door means from said open position to said closed position and vice versa, said reciprocally operative means moving said trap door means to said open position to enable said can to fall through said exit hole upon movement of one of said arm means away from said abutment surface, said reciprocally operative means moving said trap door means to said closed position after said trap door means has been in said open position; and
- further including a support means for supporting said motor means, said gear means, said first, second and third arm means, said trap door means and said means for reciprocally moving said trap door means, and a table means for supporting said abutment surface, said support means and said table means being slidably engaged for relative movement, and a resilient member means joining said support means and said table means to provide counteraction against relative movement between said support means and said table means.
- 9. A device for compacting empty beverage cans, comprising:
- electric motor means having an output shaft;
- gear means coacting with the output shaft of said electric motor means;
- means for receiving a can that has a mid-section and end regions with respective end faces;
- means for delivering the can to said receiving means;
- an operation site cooperable with said receiving means such that said receiving means locates the can delivered by the delivering means to the operation site;
- abutment means for providing an abutment surface for said can at said operation site;
- a first arm means drivingly connected to said gear means and being movable across said operation site towards said abutment surface to compress the mid-section of said can against said abutment surface;
- second and third arm means drivingly connected to said gear means and being movable across said operation site towards said abutment surface to compress the end regions of said can against said abutment surface, causing the respective end faces of the can to lie substantially parallel to said abutment surface;
- said gear means coacting with said first, second and third arm means to provide a synchronized movement of said first, second and third arm means towards and away from said abutment surface, said synchronized movement including positive pulling of said first arm means away from said abutment surface while said second and third arm means are positioned proximate said abutment surface to retain said can against said abutment surface; and
- further including support means for said first, second and third arm means and wherein said gear means includes a second gear and a third gear, the driving connection between said second arm means and said gear means includes a first link means having a first end and an opposite end, said second arm means having one end hinge connected to said support means and an opposite end pivotally joined to the first end of said first link means, the opposite end of said first link means being pivotally connected to said second gear at a predetermined peripheral location of said second gear such that rotation of said second gear enables said first link means to move said second arm means toward and away from said abutment surface; and
- the driving connection between said third arm means and said gear means includes a second link means having a first end and an opposite end, said third arm means having one end hinge connected to said support means and an opposite end pivotally joined to the first end of said second link means, the opposite end of said second link means being pivotally connected to said third gear at a predetermined peripheral location of said third gear such that rotation of said third gear enables said second link means to move said third arm means towards and away from said abutment surface.
- 10. A compacting device according to claim 9 including slide means located at the predetermined peripheral location of said third gear and wherein said first arm means is of an angled two-legged configuration, one said leg having one free end pivotally connected to said support means and an opposite end region provided with slot means for interacting with said slide means, and the other said leg of said first arm means extending from said opposite end region towards said abutment surface.
- 11. A compacting device according to claim 9 including trap door means and an exit hole at said operation site, said trap door means having an open position wherein said exit hole is opened, and a closed position wherein said exit hole is closed, and reciprocally operative means drivingly connected to said gear means for moving said trap door means from said open position to said closed position and vice versa, said reciprocally operative means moving said trap door means to said open position to enable said can to fall through said exit hole upon movement of one of said arm means away from said abutment surface, said reciprocally operative means moving said trap door means to said closed position after said trap door means has been in said open position.
- 12. A compacting device according to claim 9, wherein said gear means comprises a first gear having a first radius and second and third gears each having a second larger radius than said first radius, said first gear being connected to the output shaft of said electric motor, and said second and third gears rotating at the same velocity and in opposite directions.
- 13. A compacting device according to claim 9 further comprising means on said first, second and third arm means for physically contacting said can and having a predetermined overall surface area to compact said can upon movement against said can when said can is at said operation site.
- 14. A compacting device according to claim 9 including control means for controlling operation of said device at a continuous first cycle rate.
- 15. A compacting device according to claim 9 including a pressure sensing means connected to said abutment surface to detect compressive forces acting on said abutment surface when said can is compacted.
- 16. A device for compacting empty beverage cans, comprising:
- electric motor means having an output shaft;
- gear means coacting with the output shaft of said electric motor means;
- means for receiving a can that has a mid-section and end regions with respective end faces;
- means for delivering the can to said receiving means;
- an operation site cooperable with said receiving means such that said receiving means locates the can delivered by the delivering means to the operation site;
- abutment means for providing an abutment surface for said can at said operation site;
- a first arm means drivingly connected to said gear means and being movable across said operation site towards said abutment surface to compress the mid-section of said can against said abutment surface;
- second and third arm means drivingly connected to said gear means and being movable across said operation site towards said abutment surface to compress the end regions of said can against said abutment surface, causing the respective end faces of the can to lie substantially parallel to said abutment surface; and
- said gear means coacting with said first, second and third arm means to provide a synchronized movement of said first, second and third arm means towards and away from said abutment surface, said synchronized movement including positive pulling of said first arm means away from said abutment surface while said second and third arm means are positioned proximate said abutment surface to retain said can against said abutment surface; and
- further including trap door means and an exit hole at said operation site, said trap door means having an open position wherein said exit hole is opened, and a closed position wherein said exit hole is closed, and reciprocally operative means drivingly connected to said gear means for moving said trap door means from said open position to said closed position and vice versa, said reciprocally operative means moving said trap door means to said open position to enable said can to fall through said exit hole upon movement of one of said arm means away from said abutment surface, said reciprocally operative means moving said trap door means to said closed position after said trap door means has been in said open position;
- wherein said gear means include a second and third gear and said second and third gears have a bottom side and said reciprocally operative means includes cam means on said trap door means and a pin means attached to the bottom side of one of said second and third gears for interacting with said pin means.
- 17. A device for compacting empty beverage cans, comprising:
- electric motor means having an output shaft;
- gear means coacting with the output shaft of said electric motor means;
- means for receiving a can that has a mid-section and end regions with respective end faces;
- means for delivering the can to said receiving means;
- an operation site cooperable with said receiving means such that said receiving means locates the can delivered by the delivering means to the operation site;
- abutment means for providing an abutment surface for said can at said operation site;
- a first arm means drivingly connected to said gear means and being movable across said operation site towards said abutment surface to compress the mid-section of said can against said abutment surface;
- second and third arm means drivingly connected to said gear means and being movable across said operation site towards said abutment surface to compress the end regions of said can against said abutment surface, causing the respective end faces of the can to lie substantially parallel to said abutment surface; and
- said gear means coacting with said first, second and third arm means to provide a synchronized movement of said first, second and third arm means towards and away from said abutment surface, said synchronized movement including positive pulling of said first arm means away from said abutment surface while said second and third arm means are positioned proximate said abutment surface to retain said can against said abutment surface; and
- including trap door means and an exit hole at said operation site, said trap door means having an open position wherein said exit hole is opened, and a closed position wherein said exit hole is closed, and reciprocally operative means drivingly connected to said gear means for moving said trap door means from said open position to said closed position and vice versa, said reciprocally operative means moving said trap door means to said open position to enable said can to fall through said exit hole upon movement of one of said arm means away from said abutment surface, said reciprocally operative means moving said trap door means to said closed position after said trap door means has been in said open position; and
- further including a support means for supporting said motor means, said gear means, said first, second and third arm means, said trap door means and said means for reciprocally moving said trap door means, and a table means for supporting said abutment surface, said support means and said table means being slidably engaged for relative movement, and a resilient member means joining said support means and said table means to provide counteraction against relative movement between said support means and said table means.
