Claims
- 1. A hard coating formed on the surface of a substrate material, said coating having a first layer and a second layer, wherein said first layer is formed on the substrate material and is a compound composed of (a) aluminum or titanium or a mixture thereof, and optionally silicon; and (b) boron, carbon or nitrogen, or a mixture thereof, and the said second layer is composed of AlBN.
- 2. The hard coating according to claim 1 in which the said first layer comprises chemical constituents as shown;
- (Al.sub.a Ti.sub.1-a) (C.sub.b N.sub.1-b)
- where,
- 0.25.ltoreq.a.ltoreq.0.75
- 0.ltoreq.b.ltoreq.0.4
- 3. The hard coating according to claim 2 wherein 0.45.ltoreq.a.ltoreq.0.70, 0.ltoreq.b.ltoreq.0.2.
- 4. The hard coating according to claim 3 wherein 0.56.ltoreq.a.ltoreq.0.65.
- 5. The hard coating according to claim 1 in which the said first layer comprises chemical constituents as shown;
- (Al.sub.c Ti.sub.1-c) (B.sub.d N.sub.1-d)
- where,
- 0.05.ltoreq.c.ltoreq.0.75
- 0.02.ltoreq.d.ltoreq.0.12
- 6. The hard coating according to claim 5 wherein 0.25.ltoreq.c.ltoreq.0.70, 0.03.ltoreq.d.ltoreq.0.08.
- 7. The hard coating according to claim 6, wherein 0.50.ltoreq.c.ltoreq.0.65. 0.02 <d <0.12
- 8. The hard coating according to claim 1 in which the said first layer comprises chemical constituents as shown;
- (Al.sub.x Ti.sub.1-x-y Si.sub.y) (C.sub.z N.sub.1-z)

- 0.05.ltoreq.x.ltoreq.0.75
- 0.01.ltoreq.y.ltoreq.0.1
- 0.ltoreq.z.ltoreq.0.4

- 9. The hard coating according to claim 8, wherein 0.25.ltoreq.x.ltoreq.0.7, 0.02.ltoreq.y.ltoreq.0.08, 0.ltoreq.z.ltoreq.0.2.
- 10. The hard coating according to claim 9, wherein 0.56.ltoreq.x.ltoreq.0.7, 0.02.ltoreq.y.ltoreq.0.05.
- 11. The hard coating according to claim 1 wherein the AlBN has the formula Al.sub.p B.sub.q N.sub.1-p-g wherein 0.01.ltoreq.p.ltoreq.0.3, 0.2.ltoreq.q.ltoreq.0.6.
- 12. The hard coating according to claim 11, wherein 0.03.ltoreq.p.ltoreq.0.1, 0.4.ltoreq.q.ltoreq.0.55.
- 13. The hard coating according to claim 1 in which the said first layer has a thickness of 0.1 to 20 .mu.m.
- 14. The hard coating according to claim 1 in which the said second layer has a thickness of 0.1 to 20 .mu.m.
- 15. The hard coating according to claim 1, wherein the first and second layers each independently have a thickness of from about 1 .mu.m to about 12 .mu.m.
- 16. The hard coating according to claim 15, wherein the first and second layers each independently have a thickness of from about 2 .mu.m to about 8 .mu.m.
