Claims
- 1. A hard contact lens which comprises a cross-linked copolymer having excellent oxygen permeability, good hardness and processability, as well as good hydrophilicity consisting essentially of the following monomers, each based on 100 moles of total fumaric acid esters:
- (a) 50 to 80 moles of a dialkyl fumarate,
- (b) 5 to 50 moles of at least one of an alkyl (hydroxyalkyl) fumarate and a monoalkyl fumarate,
- (c) up to 20 moles of at least one cross-linking agent selected from the group consisting of diallyl fumarate, allyl methacrylate, allyl acrylate, trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate, trimethylolpropane triacrylate, ethylene glycol diacrylate, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, divinylbenzene and a cross-linking agent represented by the general formula (XI): ##STR22## wherein R.sub.15 and R.sub.16 are respectively, independently, selected from the group consisting of R.sub.1, R.sub.11, and R.sub.12 ; X.sub.3 is an ethylene group or a group having the formula: ##STR23## wherein R.sub.17 is --CH.sub.3 or ##STR24## t is 0 or an integer of 1 to 55, R.sub.1 is a straight alkyl group, a branched alkyl group or a cyclic alkyl group having 1 to 13 carbon atoms, R.sub.11 is --(CH.sub.2).sub.k.sbsb.3 --C.sub.c H F.sub.2c+1-d, c is an integer of 1 to 21, d is 0 or 1 and k.sub.3 is 0 or an integer of 1 to 3, R.sub.12 is ##STR25## l3 is 1 or 3, D is --CH.sub.3 or ##STR26## and (d) up to 50 moles of at least one member selected from the group consisting of an alkyl(silicon-containing alkyl) fumarate, an alkyl(fluoroalkyl) fumarate, and a fluoroalkyl(silicon-containing alkyl) fumarate, containing at least two different fumaric acid diesters.
- 2. A hard contact lens which comprises a cross-linked copolymer having excellent oxygen permeability, good hardness and processability, as well as good hydrophilicity consisting essentially of the following monomers, each based on 100 moles of total fumaric acid esters:
- (a) 50 to 80 moles of a dialkyl fumarate,
- (b) up to 20 moles of at least one cross-linking agent selected from the group consisting of diallyl fumarate, allyl methacrylate, allyl acrylate, trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate, trimethylolpropane triacrylate, ethylene glycol diacrylate, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, divinylbenzene and a cross-linking agent represented by the general formula (XI): ##STR27## wherein R.sub.15 and R.sub.16 are respectively, independently, selected from the group consisting of R.sub.1, R.sub.11, and R.sub.12 ; X.sub.3 is an ethylene group or a group having the formula: ##STR28## wherein R.sub.17 is --CH.sub.3 or ##STR29## t is 0 or an integer of 1 to 55, R.sub.1 is a straight alkyl group, a branched alkyl group or a cyclic alkyl group having 1 to 13 carbon atoms, R.sub.11 is --(CH.sub.2).sub.k.sbsb.3 --C.sub.c H F.sub.2c+1-d, c is an integer of 1 to 21, d is 0 or 1 and k.sub.3 is 0 or an integer of 1 to 3, R.sub.12 is ##STR30## l3 is 1 or 3, D is --CH.sub.3 or ##STR31## and (c) 5 to 50 moles of at least one member selected from the group consisting of an alkyl (silicon-containing alkyl) fumarate, an alkyl (fluoroalkyl) fumarate, and a fluoroalkyl (silicon-containing alkyl) fumarate containing at least two different fumaric acid diesters.
- 3. A hard contact lens which comprises a cross-linked copolymer having excellent oxygen permeability, good hardness and processability, as well as good hydrophilicity consisting essentially of following monomers, each based on 100 moles of total fumaric acid esters:
- (a) 50 to 80 moles of a dialkyl fumarate,
- (b) 5 to 50 moles of a member selected from the group consisting of (i) a di(fluoroalkyl) fumarate, (ii) a di(silicon-containing alkyl) fumarate and (iii) a combination of (i) and (ii),
- (c) up to 20 moles of at least one cross-linking agent selected from the group consisting of diallyl fumarate, allyl methacrylate, allyl acrylate, trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate, trimethylolpropane triacryalate, ethylene glycol diacrylate, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, divinylbenzene and a cross-linking agent represented by the general formula (XI): ##STR32## wherein R.sub.15 and R.sub.16 are respectively, independently, selected from the group consisting of R.sub.1, R.sub.11, and R.sub.12 ; X.sub.3 is an ethylene group or a group having the formula: ##STR33## wherein R.sub.17 is --CH.sub.3 or ##STR34## t is 0 or an integer of 1 to 55, R.sub.1 is a straight alkyl group, a branched alkyl group or a cyclic alkyl group having 1 to 13 carbon atoms, R.sub.11 is --(CH.sub.2).sub.k.sbsb.3 --C.sub.c H F.sub.2c+1-d, c is an integer of 1 to 21, d is 0 or 1 and k.sub.3 is 0 or an integer of 1 to 3, R.sub.12 is ##STR35## l3 is 1 or 3, D is --CH.sub.3 or ##STR36## (d) up to 50 moles of at least one member selected from the group consisting of an alkyl(silicon-containing alkyl) fumarate, an alkyl(fluoroalkyl) fumarate and a fluoroalkyl(silicon-containing alkyl) fumarate, and
- (e) up to 35 moles of monomers other than said fumaric acid esters containing at least two different fumaric acid diesters.
- 4. The contact lens of claim 3 wherein monomer (b) is a di(silicon-containing alkyl) fumarate of the following formula (VI): ##STR37## wherein m.sub.3 and n.sub.2 are 1 or 3; R.sub.5, R.sub.6, R.sub.7, R.sub.8, R.sub.9, and R.sub.10 are a methyl group or ##STR38##
- 5. A hard contact lens which comprises a cross-linked copolymer having excellent oxygen permeability, good hardness and processability, as well as good hydrophilicity consisting essentially of the following monomers, each based on 100 moles of total fumaric acid esters:
- (a) 50 to 80 moles of a dialkyl fumarate,
- (b) 5 to 45 moles of a member selected from the group consisting of (i) a di(fluoroalkyl) fumarate, (ii) a di(silicon-containing alkyl) fumarate and (iii) a combination of (i) and (ii),
- (c) 5 to 30 moles of an alkyl(hydroxyalkyl) fumarate and/or a monoalkyl fumarate,
- (d) up to 20 moles at least one cross-linking agent selected from the group consisting of diallyl fumarate, allyl methacrylate, allyl acrylate, trimethylolpropane, trimethacrylate, trimethylolpropane triacrylate, ethylene glycol diacrylate, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, divinylbenzene and a cross-linking agent represented by the general formula (XI): ##STR39## wherein R.sub.15 and R.sub.16 are respectively, independently, selected from the group consisting of R.sub.1, R.sub.11, and R.sub.12 ; X.sub.3 is an ethylene group or a group having the formula: ##STR40## wherein R.sub.17 is --CH.sub.3 or ##STR41## t is 0 or an integer of 1 to 55, R.sub.1 is a straight alkyl group, a branched alkyl group or a cyclic alkyl group having 1 to 13 carbon atoms, R.sub.11 is --(CH.sub.2).sub.k.sbsb.3 --C.sub.c H F.sub.2c+1-d, c is an integer of 1 to 21, d is 0 or 1 and k.sub.3 is 0 or an integer of 1 to 3, R.sub.12 is ##STR42## l3 is 1 or 3, D is --CH.sub.3 or ##STR43## (e) up to 50 moles of at least one member selected from the group consisting of an alkyl(silicon-containing alkyl) fumarate, an alkyl(fluoroalkyl) fumarate, and a fluoroalkyl(silicon-containing alkyl) fumarate, and
- (f) up to 35 moles of monomers other than said different fumaric acid esters containing at least two fumaric acid diesters.
- 6. The contact lens of claim 5, wherein monomer (b) is a di(silicon-containing alkyl) fumarate of the following formula (VI): ##STR44## wherein m.sub.3 and n.sub.2 are 1 or 3; R.sub.5, R.sub.6, R.sub.7, R.sub.8, R.sub.9, and R.sub.10 are a methyl group or ##STR45##
- 7. The hard contact lens of claim 1 in which the copolymer also contains up to 35 moles of monomers other than said fumaric acid esters.
- 8. The hard contact lens of claim 2 in which the copolymer also contains up to 35 moles of monomers other than said fumaric acid esters.
- 9. The hard contact lens of claim 1 wherein said cross-linked copolymer is of said monomers and, in addition, a minor amount of an alkyl (trimethylsilyl) fumarate.
- 10. The hard contact lens of claim 2 wherein said cross-linked copolymer is of said monomers and, in addition, a minor amount of an alkyl (trimethylsilyl) fumarate.
- 11. The hard contact lens of claim 3 wherein said cross-linked copolymer is of said monomers and, in addition, a minor amount of an alkyl (trimethylsilyl) fumarate.
- 12. The hard contact lens of claim 5 wherein said cross-linked copolymer is of said monomers and, in addition, a minor amount of an alkyl (trimethylsilyl) fumarate.
- 13. The hard contact lens of claim 1 wherein said monomer (d) is a fluoroalkyl (silicon-containing alkyl) fumarate.
- 14. The hard contact lens of claim 2 wherein said monomer (c) is a fluoroalkyl (silicon-containing alkyl) fumarate.
- 15. The hard contact lens of claim 3 wherein said monomer (d) is a fluoroalkyl (silicon-containing alkyl) fumarate.
- 16. The hard contact lens of claim 5 wherein said monomer (e) is a fluoroalkyl (silicon-containing alkyl) fumarate.
- 17. The hard contact lens of claim 1 containing at least 0.6 mole of said cross-linking agent.
- 18. The hard contact lens of claim 2 containing at least 0.6 mole of said cross-linking agent.
- 19. The hard contact lens of claim 3 containing at least 0.6 mole of said cross-linking agent.
- 20. The hard contact lens of claim 5 containing at least 0.6 mole of said cross-linking agent.
