Claims
- 1. A carriage assembly for a disk drive actuator comprising:
- a load beam having a distal end;
- a gimbal, being more flexible than said load beam, having a gimbal distal end and a gimbal proximal end coupled to said load beam;
- means, disposed proximate said gimbal distal end, for restraining movement of said gimbal distal end relative to said load beam distal end when the carriage assembly is shocked;
- a flexure having a distal end and a back end, said flexure distal end being coupled to said gimbal distal end, and said flexure back end being free to move relative to said gimbal; and
- a read/write head coupled to said flexure;
- wherein said load beam includes a tab, disposed proximate said load beam distal end and extending distally from said load beam distal end and in the same plane as a plane defined by said load beam, capable of cooperating with said means for restraining movement of said gimbal distal end to restrain movement of said gimbal distal end relative to said tab when the carriage assembly is shocked.
- 2. The carriage assembly of claim 1 wherein said tab is coupled to said load beam.
- 3. The carriage assembly of claim 1 wherein said tab is integrally formed with said load beam.
- 4. The carriage assembly of claim 1 wherein said means for restraining movement comprises a restraining member capable of contacting said tab when the carriage assembly is shocked.
- 5. The carriage assembly of claim 4 wherein said tab extends through said restraining member.
- 6. The carriage assembly of claim 5 wherein said restraining member defines a window opening therein into which said tab extends.
- 7. The carriage assembly of claim 6 wherein said restraining member has an upper portion that defines at least a portion of the window opening, said upper portion contacting said tab when the carriage assembly is shocked.
- 8. The carriage assembly of claim 6 wherein said restraining member defines a substantially rectangular window opening therein into which said tab extends.
- 9. The carriage assembly of claim 4 wherein said restraining member defines a plane that is not coplanar and not parallel with a plane defined by said gimbal proximal end.
- 10. The carriage assembly of claim 4 wherein said restraining member defines a plane that is not coplanar and not parallel with a plane defined by said load beam.
- 11. A disk drive for cooperating with a removable data storage disk cartridge, comprising:
- a platform;
- a spindle motor assembly, movably coupled to said platform, for engaging and rotating a platter disposed in said cartridge;
- an actuator assembly, coupled to said platform, having a carriage assembly, said actuator assembly slidably supporting said carriage assembly, said carriage assembly comprising:
- a load beam having a distal end;
- a gimbal, being more flexible than said load beam, having a gimbal proximal end coupled to said load beam;
- a gimbal distal end;
- means, disposed proximate said gimbal distal end, for restraining movement of said gimbal distal end relative to said load beam distal end when the carriage assembly is shocked, wherein said means defines a plane that is not coplanar and not parallel with a plane defined by said gimbal and said load beam;
- a flexure having a distal end and a back end, said flexure distal end being coupled to said gimbal distal end, and said flexure back end being free to move relative to said gimbal; and
- a read/write head coupled to said flexure.
- 12. A carriage assembly for a disk drive actuator comprising:
- a load beam having a proximal end and a distal end;
- a gimbal having a gimbal distal end and a gimbal proximal end, said gimbal being pivotally coupled to said load beam;
- a window disposed between said load beam distal end and said gimbal distal end for restraining movement of said gimbal distal end relative to said load beam distal end, wherein said window defines a plane that is not coplanar and not parallel with a plane defined by said gimbal and said load beam;
- a flexure having a distal end and a back end, said flexure distal end being coupled to said gimbal distal end, and said flexure back end being free to move relative to said gimbal; and
- a read/write head coupled to said flexure.
- 13. The carriage assembly of claim 12 further comprising a tab disposed between said load beam distal end and said gimbal distal end, said tab extending distally from said load beam distal end in the same plane as a plane defined by said load beam, said tab being capable of cooperating with said window for restraining movement of said gimbal distal end relative to said load beam distal end.
- 14. A carriage assembly for a disk drive actuator comprising:
- a load beam having a proximal end and a distal end;
- a gimbal, being more flexible than said load beam, having a gimbal distal end and a gimbal proximal end, said gimbal proximal end being coupled to said load beam, said gimbal being oriented in relationship to said load beam wherein said gimbal distal end is disposed proximate said load beam distal end;
- means, disposed proximate said gimbal distal end, for allowing restrained movement of said gimbal distal end relative to said load beam distal end when the carriage assembly is shocked, wherein said means for allowing restrained movement further comprises a window opening disposed proximate to said gimbal distal end, said window opening defining a plane that is not coplanar and not parallel with a plane defined by said gimbal;
- a flexure having a distal end and a back end, said flexure distal end being coupled to said gimbal distal end, and said flexure back end being free to move relative to said gimbal; and
- a read/write head coupled to said flexure.
