- a sequential color generator optically disposed between a light source for generating light and the display panel, the sequential color generator operating on the light from the light source to direct a plurality of primary colors toward the display panel in a sequential order; and
- a frame that mounts the panel and sequential color generator on a user's head.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the light source includes a plurality of light emitters.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein the light emitters include a red emitter, a green emitter and a blue emitter.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the display panel includes an active matrix liquid crystal display (AMLCD) .
- 5. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the sequential color generator includes an electronic color filter.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein the electronic color filter includes a plurality of ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) color filters.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the sequential color generator is a diffractive optic element which splits the light from the light source into a predetermined pattern of color light.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the diffractive optic element is a binary optic element.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising a sequential color driver responsive to video information from a video source and in response thereto actuating the sequential color generator to sequentially illuminate each pixel on the display panel with primary colors so the viewer perceives a color image from the display panel over time.
- 10. A head-mounted display apparatus comprising:
- a monocular display module mounted on a frame to be positioned on a user's head;
- a display panel within the module having pixels that form an image to be displayed to a viewer by selectively passing light; and
- a sequential color generator optically disposed between a light source for generating light and the display panel such that a plurality of colors from the light source can be directed through any selected pixels, the sequential color generator directing the plurality of colors of light from the light source toward the display panel in a sequential order to provide a color image.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 10 wherein the light source includes a plurality of light emitters.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 11 wherein the light emitters include a red emitter, a green emitter and a blue emitter.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 10 wherein the display panel includes an active matrix liquid crystal display (AMLCD).
- 14. A method of using a communications device for displaying a color image to a viewer's eye comprising the steps of:
- providing a wireless transceiver for providing audio and video information to the user;
- providing an audio transducer adjacent to the user;
- providing a display panel adjacent to the user's eye, the display panel having pixels for forming an image;
- providing a sequential color generator in an optical path adjacent to the display panel;
- generating a plurality of colors with the sequential color generator and directing the colors sequentially at any selected pixels of the display panel; and
- displaying a partial image with each color in sequence to provide a color image to the user.
- 15. The method of claim 14 wherein the step of generating colors includes generating color stripes.
- 16. The method of claim 15 wherein each color is directed toward at least one row of the display panel.
- 17. The method of claim 14 wherein the step of generating color includes generating color blocks.
- 18. The method of claim 17 wherein the colors comprise a pair of colors.
- 19. The method of claim 14 wherein the step of generating colors includes generating colors from the group comprising red, green, blue and black.
- 20. The method of claim 14 wherein the sequential color generator is an electronic color filter.
- 21. A communications device for interfacing with a user, comprising:
- a wireless transceiver for providing audio and video information to the user;
- an audio transducer adjacent to the user;
- a display panel having pixels for forming an image adjacent to the user's eye;
- a light source providing light having a plurality of color components; and
- a sequential color circuit connected to the display panel such that each color can be sequentially directed at each pixel of the display panel to form a partial image of each color component in sequence, the sequence of partial images forming a color image.
- 22. The device of claim 21 further comprising a sequential color generator wherein the sequential color generator generates color stripes.
- 23. The device of claim 21 further comprising a sequential color generator that directs each color toward at least one row of the display panel.
- 24. The device of claim 21 further comprising a sequential color generator that generates color blocks.
- 25. The device of claim 21 wherein the colors comprise a pair of colors.
