Claims
- 1. For use in ambulatory cardiac patent care, portable ECG monitoring apparatus comprising:
- detection means for detecting an abnormality in a patient's cardiovascular performance definable as an event;
- event determination means integral with said detection means and responsive thereto for determining that an event has occurred;
- recordation means integral with said determination means for recording such event as ECG data representative thereof and interpretable by a physician, said recordation means including at least one volatile memory device in which such ECG data are stored; and
- power supply means supplying power to circuitry including said detection means, said event determination means, and said recordation means, said power supply means including at least a first and a second power source which are independently operable, said first power source normally supplying power at least a first predetermined voltage level to a portion of said circuitry including said detection means, said event determination means, and said recordation means, said second power source supplying power at a second predetermined voltage level to a smaller portion of said circuitry including said recordation means when said first power source fails to supply at least said first predetermined voltage level, whereby such event recorded as ECG data within said memory device is preserved.
- 2. For use in ambulatory apparatus providing for the extended monitoring of ECG signals and having at least one semiconductor device therein, a power supplying method comprising:
- providing integral with such an apparatus a first source of DC power having a predefined output voltage level and a predefined nominal energy capacity;
- regulating such output voltage level to produce an operating voltage level lower than such output voltage level; and
- supplying said operating voltage level to at least one semiconductor device of the apparatus,
- said regulating being performed in such manner that said operating voltage is substantially lower than a predefined nominal input supply voltage of such a semiconductor device, whereby the predefined nominal energy capacity of such a first source of DC power is increased to provide for extended ECG signal monitoring.
- 3. The method of claim 2 for use with apparatus having at least one volatile memory device, wherein the method further comprises the step of backing up such a first source of DC power with a second source of DC power operatively connected, in the event of the failure of such a first source of DC power, to such a volatile memory device.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein each of said first and second power sources includes a DC battery having a corresponding nominal output voltage level.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 4, which further comprises means for regulating the output of at least one of said first and second power sources to produce an operating voltage level substantially below the corresponding nominal output voltage level of said battery.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 4, which further comprises means for indicating a low battery condition.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said first and second power sources supply power to said respective portions of said circuitry at a voltage level substantially lower than a predefined nominal input voltage of said respective portions of said circuitry.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said second predetermined voltage level is lower than said first predetermined voltage level.
- 9. Ambulatory cardiac patient care apparatus comprising:
- a first power with source operatively connected to and normally supplying power at least a first predetermined voltage level to volatile and non-volatile circuit elements, said first predetermined voltage level being substantially lower than a predefined nominal input voltage of said volatile and non-volatile circuit elements;
- a second power source operatively connected to and supplying power, at a second predetermined voltage level which is lower than said first predetermined voltage level, to substantially fewer circuit elements including said volatile circuit elements, when said first power source fails to supply at least said first predetermined voltage level;
- a microprocessor operatively coupled to an ECG signal detector for monitoring a patient's cardiovascular performance and for generating ECG data, the microprocessor further monitoring the voltage level being supplied by said first power source; and
- a volatile memory device operatively connected with said microprocessor, said memory device constituting at least a part of said fewer circuit elements, for storage of said ECG data provided thereby.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein each of said first and second power sources includes a DC battery having a corresponding nominal output voltage level.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein said first and second power sources alternatively and without interruption supply power to at least said volatile circuit elements via a wired-OR connection.
