Claims
- 1. An expandable adhesive comprising a) a cured 1-part epoxy resin; b) a viscosity increasing agent; and c) not greater than 25 parts by weight of an inorganic filler, based on 100 parts of the epoxy resin, wherein the adhesive when expanded contains voids having a number weighted mean diameter of less than 1000 μm.
- 2. An expandable adhesive according to claim 1 wherein the viscosity enhancing agent is a polymethylmethacrylate powder.
- 3. An expandable adhesive of claim 2 wherein the viscosity increasing agent is a carboxylic acid functionalized polymethylmethacrylate.
- 4. An expandable adhesive of claim 2 which contains not greater than 15 parts by weight of an inorganic filler, based on 100 parts of the epoxy resin.
- 5. An expanded adhesive comprising the expandable adhesive of claim 1 which is expanded.
- 6. An expanded adhesive according to claim 5 wherein the viscosity increasing agent is a polymethylmethacrylate powder.
- 7. The expanded adhesive of claim 6 wherein the viscosity increasing agent is a carboxylic acid functionalized polymethylmethacrylate.
- 8. The expanded adhesive of claim 7 which contains not greater than 15 parts by weight of an inorganic filler, based on 100 parts of the epoxy resin.
- 9. The expanded adhesive of claim 8 wherein the voids have a number weighted mean diameter of less than 500 μm.
- 10. The expanded adhesive of claim 9 which bonds a rigid polyurethane foam with a metal substrate.
- 11. The expanded adhesive of claim 10 which has a Young's modulus at 100% expansion of at least 1000 mPa.
- 12. A foam insert comprising a) an expanded polymer, and b) an expandable adhesive according to claim 1 wherein the expandable adhesive has a Young's modulus of at least 500 mPa at 100% expansion.
- 13. A foam insert of claim 12 wherein the expanded polymer is a rigid polyurethane foam.
- 14. A foam insert of claim 13 wherein the polymeric viscosity enhancing agent is a polymethylmethacrylate powder.
- 15. The foam insert of claim 14 wherein the polymethylmethacrylate contains carboxylic acid functionality.
- 16. The structural form insert of claim 15 wherein the expandable adhesive has a Young's modulus of at least 1000 Mpa at 100% expansion.
- 17. A reinforced vehicular frame comprising a) an expanded polymer, and b) an expanded adhesive according to claim 5.
- 18. The reinforced vehicular frame of claim 17 wherein the polymeric viscosity enhancing agent is a carboxylic acid functionalized polymethylmethacrylate and the expanded adhesive has a Young's modulus of at least 1000 Mpa at 100% expansion.
