Claims
- 1. A cured gasket formed from a heat curable prepolymer substantially free from solvents having a tensile strength of at least about 410 psi and a compression set of less than about 30% said prepolymer formed from the polymerization of:
- at least about 65% of a rubber formable monomer selected from the group consisting essentially of conjugated diolephins, alkyl esters of acrylic acid and alkyl esters of methacrylic acid,
- at least about 20% of a nitrile monomer selected from the group consisting of acrylonitrile and methacrylonitrile;
- at least about 4% of an N-(R-oxymethy) acrylamide monomer where R represents C.sub.3 -C.sub.22 alkyl or alkyl substituted with a polar group selected from the group consisting essentially of ether, aldehyde, ketone, amide, ester, imide, or pthalimide; whereby during the heat cure of said prepolymer said acrylamide monomer forms a compound R--OH and wherein R--OH has a boiling point greater than the cure temperature of said prepolymer; and
- in the presence of an amount of a chain transfer agent effective to establish the weight average molecular weight of said prepolymer at less than about 25,000.
- 2. A cured gasket as claimed in claim 1 wherein said prepolymer further comprises from about 65% to about 75% of said rubber formable monomer; from about 20% to about 30% of said nitrile monomer and from about 4% to about 10% of said acrylamide monomer.
- 3. A cured gasket as claimed in claim 2 wherein the cure temperature of said prepolymer is greater than or equal to 350.degree. F.
- 4. A cured gasket as claimed in claim 3 wherein R represents hexylcarbitol.
- 5. A cured laminate formed from a heat curable prepolymer substantially free from solvents having a tensile strength of at least about 410 psi, and a compression set of less than about 30% said prepolymer formed from the polymerization of:
- at least about 65% of a rubber formable monomer selected from the group consisting essentially of conjugated diolephins, alkyl esters of acrylic acid and alkyl esters of methacrylic acid
- at least about 20% of a nitrile monomer selected from the group consisting of acrylonitrile and methacrylonitrile;
- at least about 4% of an N-(R-oxymethyl) acrylamide monomer where R represents C.sub.3 -C.sub.22 alkyl or alkyl substituted with a polar group selected from the group consisting essentially of ether, aldehyde, ketone, amide, ester, imide, or pthalimide; whereby during the heat cure of said prepolymer said acrylamide monomer forms a compound R--OH and wherein R--OH has a boiling point greater than the cure temperature of said prepolymer; and
- in the presence of an amount of a chain transfer agent effective to establish the weight average molecular weight of said prepolymer at less than about 25,000.
- 6. A cured laminate as claimed in claim 5 wherein said prepolymer further comprises from about 65% to about 75% of said rubber formable monomer; from about 20% to about 30% of said nitrile monomer and from about 4% to about 10% of said acrylamide monomer.
- 7. A cured laminate as claimed in claim 6 wherein said cure temperature is greater than or equal to 350.degree. F.
- 8. A cured laminate as claimed in claim 7 wherein R represents hexylcarbitol.
- 9. A cured gasket formed from a liquid heat curable prepolymer substantially free from solvents said prepolymer formed from the polymerization of:
- at least about 65% of a rubber formable monomer selected from the group consisting essentially of conjugated diolephins, alkyl esters of acrylic acid and alkyl esters of methacrylic acid;
- at least about 20% of a nitrile monomer selected from the group consisting essentially of acrylonitrile and methacrylonitrile;
- at least about 4% of an N-(R-oxymethyl) acrylamide monomer wherein R represents C.sub.3 -C.sub.22 alkyl or alkyl substituted with a polar group selected from the groups consisting essentially of ether, aldehyde, ketone, amide, ester, imide, or pthalimide wherein during the heat cure of said prepolymer said acrylamide monomer forms R--OH and wherein R--OH has a boiling point greater than the cure temperature of the prepolymer;
- said prepolymer formed in the presence of an amount of a chain transfer agent effective to establish the weight average molecular weight of said prepolymer of less than about 25,000.
- 10. A cured laminate formed from a liquid heat curable prepolymer substantially free from solvents said prepolymer formed from the polymerization of:
- at least about 65% of a rubber formable monomer selected from the group consisting essentially of conjugated diolephins, alkyl esters of acrylic acid and alkyl esters of methacrylic acid;
- at least about 20% of a nitrile monomer selected from the group consisting essentially of acrylonitrile and methacrylonitrile;
- at least about 4% of an N-(R-oxymethyl) acrylamide monomer wherein R represents C.sub.3 -C.sub.22 alkyl or alkyl substituted with a polar group selected from the groups consisting essentially of ether, aldehyde, ketone, amide, ester, imide, or pthalimide wherein during the heat cure of said prepolymer said acrylamide monomer forms R--OH and wherein R--OH has a boiling point greater than the cure temperature of the prepolymer;
- said prepolymer formed in the presence of an amount of a chain transfer agent effective to establish the weight average molecular weight of said prepolymer at less than about 25,000.
