Claims
- 1. An article comprising a polymeric element which is a continuous extruded polymeric sheet, said element comprising
- (1) a first surface which has an embossed pattern which (a) is over at least part of the surface, and (b) undergoes a visible change when the element is heated such that the embossed surface becomes substantially smooth to indicate recovery; and
- (2) a second surface which is not embossed.
- 2. An article according to claim 1 wherein the article is heat-recoverable.
- 3. An article according to claim 1 wherein the article is not heat-recoverable.
- 4. An article according to claim 1 wherein the article further includes an adhesive layer which is positioned adjacent to the second surface.
- 5. An article according to claim 1 wherein the embossed pattern covers at least 20% of the first surface.
- 6. An article according to claim 1 wherein the depth of the embossed pattern is at least 0.050 mm.
- 7. An article according to claim 1 which is in the form of a hollow tube, a sheet, or a laminar strip.
- 8. An article according to claim 1 wherein the article is in the form of a patch closure.
- 9. An article according to claim 5 wherein the embossed pattern covers substantially all of the first surface.
- 10. An article according to claim 6 wherein the depth of the embossed pattern is at least 0.075 mm.
- 11. An assembly which comprises
- (1) a substrate; and
- (2) a heat-recoverable article which
- (a) comprises a polymeric element which is a continuous extruded polymeric sheet which comprises (i) a first surface which has an embossed pattern over at least part of the surface, and (ii) a second surface which is not embossed, and
- (b) is adjacent to the substrate,
- wherein when heat is applied to the article, the article recovers and the first surface comprising the embossed pattern becomes substantially smooth.
- 12. An assembly according to claim 11 wherein the heat-recoverable article is in the form of a wraparound sheet which has opposing longitudinal edges which are positioned to overlap;
- and the assembly further includes a patch closure which comprises a polymeric element which is a continuous extruded polymeric sheet, said element of the patch comprising
- (i) a first surface which has an embossed pattern which is over at least part of the surface, and
- (ii) a second surface which (a) is not embossed, (b) is positioned adjacent to an adhesive layer, and (c) covers the overlap of the opposing longitudinal edges of the heat recoverable article, wherein the embossed surface of the patch closure undergoes a visible change when the element is heated and becomes substantially smooth to indicate sufficient heating of the adhesive.
- 13. An assembly according to claim 12 wherein the patch closure is a heat-recoverable article.
- 14. An assembly according to claim 12 wherein the patch is a non-heat-recoverable article.
- 15. An assembly according to claim 11 wherein the substrate comprises a pipe.
