Claims
- 1. A method of making a floor structure which incorporates heating/cooling means, which method comprises:
- A. laying a plurality of joists;
- B. providing a plurality of solid floor panels formed of a bonded particulate material, said panels having spaced upper and lower surfaces and all being of the same size and external configuration;
- C. forming serpentine channels in the undersurfaces of some but not all of the panels;
- D. placing heat exchange elements of serpentine form in said channels so as to be close fits therein;
- E. joining said panels together on said joists to form the floor structure; and
- F. interconnecting the heat exchange elements beneath panels which are not formed with channels.
- 2. A method of installing an underfloor heating/cooling system, which method includes the use of a plurality of modules, each comprising a rigid floor panel having a first surface which, in use, is its upper surface and a second parallel surface which, in use, is its lower surface, each such panel being formed with a serpentine channel within which a heat exchange element of serpentine configuration is a close fit, and each panel being a standard floor panel in which the channel is formed as a downwardly facing channel without weakening the panel to the extent that it can no longer be used for its original purpose, and each channel being arranged to open, at least at its ends, on to the lower surface of the panel, and intermingling the panels containing heat exchange elements in interengagement with standard panels which do not incorporate heat exchange elements and are not formed with serpentine channels to form the floor itself and that interconnection of the heat exchange elements is effected beneath panels which do not incorporate heat exchange elements.
- 3. A method according to claim 1 or 2, in which the heat exchange elements comprise electric cables which are connected to power supply cables contained in conduits interposed between the panels.
- 4. A method according to claim 1 or 2, in which the heat exchange elements comprise plastic tubing through which a heating/cooling medium is passed and in which the elements are connected to supply and return pipes contained in conduits interposed between the panels.
- 5. An underfloor heating/cooling system which includes a plurality of modules, each comprising a rigid floor panel having a first surface which, in use, is its upper surface and a second parallel surface which, in use, is its lower surface, each panel being formed with a serpentine channel within which a heat exchange element of serpentine configuration and comprising small bore plastic tubing is a close fit and each panel being a standard floor panel in which the channel is formed as a downwardly facing channel without weakening the panel to the extent that it can no longer be used for its original purpose and the channel being arranged so that it opens, at least at its ends, onto the lower surface of the panel and that the panels are interengaged with standard panels which do not incorporate heat exchange elements and are not formed with serpentine channels, and that the interconnection of the heat exchange elements is effected beneath panels which do not incorporate heat exchange elements.
