Claims
- 1. A cutter system, comprising:
a milling body having a plurality of mounting pockets; and a plurality of cutting inserts mounted to the mounting pockets of said milling body to form at least one helical grouping, each cutting insert including front and back faces, at least two opposing side walls, at least one cutting edge defined at an intersection between said front face and the combination of one of said side walls, wherein the front face of the at least one insert has a radius of curvature approximately equal to a cutting diameter of the milling body to create a true helical insert.
- 2. The cutter system of claim 1, wherein at least one side wall includes a helical cut face.
- 3. The cutter system of claim 1, wherein at least one insert is generally diamond in shape.
- 4. The cutter system of claim 3, wherein said at least two opposing side walls has an angle in a range of approximately 0 to 60 degrees with respect to a central axis of the cutter body.
- 5. The cutter system of claim 4, wherein the angle is approximately 30 degrees.
- 6. The cutter system of claim 1, wherein the milling body comprises an endmill cutter body.
- 7. The cutter system of claim 1, wherein the milling body comprises a shellmill cutter body.
- 8. A cutter system, comprising:
a milling body having a plurality of mounting pockets; and a plurality of cutting inserts mounted to the mounting pockets of said milling body, each cutting insert including front and back faces, at least two opposing side walls, at least one cutting edge defined at an intersection between said front face and the combination of one of said side walls, wherein at least one side wall includes a helical cut face.
- 9. The cutter system of claim 8, wherein the front face of at least one insert has a radius of curvature approximately equal to a cutting diameter of the milling body to create a true helical insert.
- 10. The cutter system of claim 8, wherein at least one insert is indexable.
- 11. The cutter system of claim 8, wherein at least one insert is generally diamond in shape.
- 12. The cutter system of claim 11, wherein said at least two opposing side walls has an angle in a range of approximately 0 to 60 degrees with respect to a central axis of the cutter body.
- 13. The cutter system of claim 12, wherein the angle is approximately 30 degrees.
- 14. An insert for a cutter system, comprising:
a front face; a back face; at least two opposing side walls; and at least one cutting edge defined at an intersection between said front face and a combination of one of said side walls, wherein the front face has a radius of curvature approximately equal to a cutting diameter of the milling body to create a true helical cutting insert.
- 15. The cutting insert of claim 14, wherein at least one side wall includes a helical cut face.
- 16. The cutting insert of claim 14, wherein the cutting insert is indexable.
- 17. The cutting insert of claim 14, wherein the cutting insert is generally diamond in shape.
- 18. The cutting insert of claim 17, wherein said at least two opposing side walls has an angle in a range of approximately 0 to 60 degrees with respect to a central axis of the cutter body.
- 19. The cutting insert of claim 18, wherein the angle is approximately 30 degrees.
- 20. The cutting insert of claim 14, wherein the cutting insert is mounted to a mounting pocket of a milling body.
- 21. The cutting insert of claim 20, wherein the cutting insert is mounted to the mounting pocket using a three-point mounting system.
