Claims
- 1. Apparatus for reproducing video signals recorded in successive parallel tracks on a moving recording medium, said tracks being skewed relative to a direction of movement of said medium, said apparatus comprising:
- signal transducer means repeatedly scanning said recording medium in a scanning path directed generally along said tracks for reproducing the video signals from successive tracks on the recording medium upon said movement of the latter;
- controllable support means movably supporting said signal transducer means and being responsive to values of a tracking control signal above and below a predetermined level to displace said transducer means from a neutral position in first and second opposed directions, respectively, extending transversely with respect to said scanning path for maintaining substantial alignment between the transducer means and the successive tracks; and
- control signal generating means including means for providing first and second position indicating signals which respectively indicate the position of said recording medium in said direction of movement thereof and the position of said transducer means along said scanning path, and means responsive to the relative timing of said first and second position indicating signals to provide said tracking control signal at said predetermined level when said relative timing corresponds to alignment of said transducer means with one of said tracks and to provide said values of the tracking control signal selectively above and below said predetermined level in response to said relative timing corresponding to displacement of said transducer means to one side and the other, respectively, of said one track.
- 2. The apparatus according to claim 1; wherein said means for providing the first position indicating signals includes a position sensor reproducing a position control signal recorded on said medium at locations spaced apart in said direction of movement of the latter and by which the position of said medium in said direction of movement is detected; said means for providing a second position indicating signal includes a pulse generator generating a pulse signal in correspondence to the position of said transducer means along said scanning path; and said means responsive to the relative timing of the position indicating signals includes a phase comparator for phase-comparing the outputs from said position sensor and said pulse generator, the output of said comparator being connected to control said support means to move the transducer means in a direction substantially perpendicular to said scanning path, each of said tracks having an integral multiple of a television field recorded thereon, whereby when said transducer means is displaced in said substantially perpendicular direction from one of said tracks to another track, it is displaced from a location in one field to a corresponding location on another field.
- 3. The apparatus according to claim 1; wherein said support means has predetermined limits of its displacement of said transducer means in said first and second directions from said neutral position, and said means responsive to the relative timing of said first and second position indicating signals is operative, upon said relative timing corresponding to the limit of the displacement in one of said directions, to provide said tracking control signal at a value corresponding to displacement of said transducer means substantially to said limit thereof in the other of said directions.
- 4. The apparatus according to claim 3; in which the recorded video signals include vertical blanking periods, and said control signal generating means includes means to effect changes in the level of said tracking control signal only during said vertical blanking periods.
- 5. The apparatus according to claim 3; in which said transducer means includes a plurality of heads alternatively scanning said recorded medium so that each of said heads has alternating operative and inoperative periods for reproducing the video signals, said heads have respective controllable support means, and said control signal generating means includes means to effect changes in the level of said tracking control signal applied to each of said support means only during said inoperative period of the respective one of said heads.
- 6. Apparatus for reproducing a video signal recorded in successive parallel track sections on a moving recording medium, said track sections being skewed relative to a direction of movement of said medium, said apparatus comprising:
- signal transducer means repeatedly scanning said recording medium in a scanning path generally along said track sections for reproducing the video signal from said successive track sections on the recording medium upon said movement of the latter;
- controllable support means movably supporting said signal transducer means and being responsive to values of a tracking control signal above and below a predetermined level to displace said transducer means from a neutral position in first and second opposed directions respectively extending transversely with respect to said scanning path for maintaining substantial alignment between the transducer means and the successive track sections; and
- control signal generating means including means for providing first and second position indicating signals which respectively indicate the position of said recording medium in said direction of movement thereof and the position of said transducer means along said scanning path, and means responsive to the relative timing of said first and second position indicating signals to provide said tracking control signal at said predetermined level when said relative timing corresponds to alignment of said transducer means with one of said track sections and to provide said tracking control signal with values increasingly above and then below said predetermined level in response to changes in said relative timing corresponding to increasing deviation of said transducer means from said one track section.
- 7. The apparatus according to claim 6, wherein said signal transducer means is a magnetic head with an air gap, and said support means flexes in response to variation of said values of said tracking control signal to move said head in a direction along the length of said gap which is arranged substantially perpendicularly with respect to the longitudinal direction of said parallel track sections.
- 8. The apparatus according to claim 7; wherein said support means for supporting said magnetic head comprises piezo-ceramic material.
- 9. The apparatus according to claim 8; wherein said piezoceramic material is a bi-morph leaf assembly which moves said magnetic head in either direction along the gap length from a predetermined recording position.
- 10. The apparatus according to claim 8; wherein said recording medium is a magnetic tape and said magnetic head is rotated to scan the said magnetic tape at a predetermined skew angle relative to the tape length and said track sections are at nearly the same skew angle.
- 11. The apparatus according to claim 10; wherein said means for providing the first position indicating signals includes:
- a position sensor reproducing a position control signal recorded on said magnetic tape at locations spaced apart in said direction of movement of the tape and by which the position of said tape in its longitudinal direction is detected; said means for providing the second position indicating signal includes a pulse generator generating a pulse signal in correspondence to the rotational position of said magnetic sensitive head; and said means responsive to the relative timing of the position indicating signals includes a phase comparator for phase-comparing the outputs from said position sensor and said pulse generator, the output of said comparator being connected to control said piezoceramic material to move the magnetic head in a direction substantially perpendicular to said scanning path, each of said tracks having an integral multiple of a television field recorded thereon, whereby when said transducer means is displaced in said substantially perpendicular direction from one of said tracks to another track, it is displaced from a location on one field to a corresponding location on another field.
- 12. The apparatus according to claim 11; comprising, in addition:
- a second magnetic head having an air gap; and
- second piezo-ceramic support means to support said second head and control the position thereof in said direction substantially perpendicular to said scanning path said heads being alternately idle and active as transducers, each magnetic head, when idle as a transducer, being moved by a predetermined distance and in a predetermined direction substantially perpendicular to said scanning path in response to said tracking control signal.
- 13. The apparatus according to claim 11; in which each of said tracks has a television field recorded thereon and each adjacent pair of said tracks has a television frame recorded thereon, the magnetic head which is idle as a transducer being displaced in said substantially perpendicular direction by a distance equal to the amount necessary to bring said idle head into alignment with a track in which there is recorded a portion of a television frame from which another portion was reproduced when said idle head was last active as a transducer.
- 14. Apparatus for reproducing video signals recorded on a magnetic tape in successive parallel tracks which are skewed relative to a longitudinal direction of transport of the tape, said apparatus comprising:
- rotary mounting means;
- signal transducer means rotatably movable with said rotary mounting means in a plane of rotation of the latter for reproducing video signals recorded in said tracks;
- controllable support means movably supporting said signal transducer means in respect to said rotary mounting means and being responsive to variations in a tracking control signal for displacing said transducer means in a direction substantially perpendicular to said plane of rotation; and
- control signal generating means for providing said tracking control signal with stepwise level changes occurring periodically in synchronism with the rotational cycle of said rotary mounting means, with each of said level changes being maintained during reproducing of the video signals from one of said tracks, and with the amount of each of said level changes corresponding to mistracking of said transducer means relative to said one of the tracks.
- 15. The apparatus according to claim 14; in which the recorded video signals include vertical blanking periods, and said control signal generating means includes means for causing said stepwise level changes to occur during said blanking periods.
- 16. The apparatus according to claim 15; in which said tracks have a uniform pitch, and, in at least certain of said vertical blanking periods, said stepwise level changes of the tracking control signal cause movements of said transducer means through a maximum distance equal to a whole multiple of said pitch of the tracks.
- 17. The apparatus according to claim 16; in which said signal transducer means includes two signal transducer heads which alternately scan said successive tracks, each of said tracks has a field of said video signals recorded therein, and said maximum distance through which each of said heads is moved in response to said stepwise level changes in twice said pitch of the tracks.
- 18. The apparatus according to claim 16; in which said signal transducer means includes a single head by which said tracks are scanned in succession, each of said tracks has a field of the video signals recorded therein, and said maximum distance through which said head is moved in response to said stepwise level changes is substantially equal to said pitch.
- 19. Apparatus for reproducing video signals recorded on a recording medium in successive parallel tracks which are skewed relative to a direction of movement of the medium, said apparatus comprising:
- signal transducer means repeatedly scanning said recording medium in a scanning path directed generally along said tracks for reproducing the video signals from the successive tracks upon said movement of the medium;
- controllable support means movably supporting said signal transducer means and being responsive to variations in a tracking control signal for displacing said transducer means in opposed directions which are substantially perpendicular to the direction along said scanning path; and
- control signal generating means for providing said tracking control signal and being normally operative, upon mis-tracking of said transducer means relative to one of said tracks, to vary said tracking control signal in the sense for causing said support means to restore said transducer means substantially to correct tracking of said one track, said control signal generating means including means operative, upon said mis-tracking of said transducer means relative to said one track exceeding a predetermined amount, to vary said tracking control signal in the sense for causing said transducer means to effect correct tracking of another of said tracks which is nearer to said scanning path than is said one track.
- 20. Apparatus for reproducing video signals recorded on a recording medium in successive parallel tracks which are skewed relative to a direction of movement of the medium, said apparatus comprising:
- signal transducer means repeatedly scanning said recording medium in a scanning path directed generally along said tracks for reproducing the video signals recorded therein;
- controllable support means movably supporting said signal transducer means and being responsive to variations in a tracking control signal for displacing said transducer means in opposed directions which are substantially perpendicular to the direction along said scanning path; and
- control signal generating means for providing said tracking control signal with stepwise level changes occurring periodically in synchronism with the scanning cycle, with each of said level changes being maintained during reproducing of video signals from one of said tracks, said control signal generating means including means for detecting a voltage which is proportional to the tracking error of said transducer means relative to one of said tracks at the commencement of the scanning of said one track by said transducer means, and means for determining the value of said tracking control signal, at least at the commencement of the scanning of said one track, in dependence on said detected voltage.
