Claims
- 1. A device for sewing a fabric, comprising:
- a sewing machine having a needle for forming a chain of stitches onto a sewn fabric;
- a support plate for the fabric;
- means for transporting a fabric into position for sewing by the sewing machine above the support plate;
- means for initiating sewing of the transported fabric;
- means for sensing a trailing edge of the sewn fabric; and
- means responsive to the sensing means for positioning the chain forwardly of the needle.
- 2. The device of claim 1 including means responsive to the sensing means for severing the chain from the sewn fabric.
- 3. The device of claim 1 including means responsive to the sensing means for clamping the sewn fabric to the support plate to stop the material.
- 4. The device of claim 3 wherein the clamping means comprises a cylinder having a piston to clamp the sewn fabric against the support plate.
- 5. The device of claim 1 including means responsive to the sensing means for actuating grasping means to grasp the chain forwardly of the needle.
- 6. The device of 1 including means for responsive to the sensing means for raising grasping means to grasp the forwardly positioned chain, and means for lowering the grasping means after the chain has been grasped.
- 7. The device of claim 3 wherein the clamping means clamps the fabric to the support plate prior to operation of the positioning means.
- 8. The device of claim 7 including means for releasing the clamping means after operation of the positioning means.
- 9. The device of claim 1 including means responsive to the sensing means for stopping operation of the sewing machine.
- 10. The device of claim 1 including belt means above the support plate to engage against the fabric, means for driving the belt means to move the fabric during sewing of the fabric, and means responsive to the sensing means for lifting the belt means away from the support plate prior to operation of positioning means to permit passage of the chain.
- 11. The device of claim 10 including means responsive to the sensing means for stopping the belt means prior to operation of the positioning means.
- 12. The device of claim 10 including means for lowering the belt means into operative position adjacent the support plate after passage of the chain.
- 13. The device of claim 1 including means for turning the fabric during sewing.
- 14. The device of claim 1 including belt means located above the support plate for moving the fabric during sewing, and means responsive to the sensing means for stopping the belt means.
- 15. The device of claim 1 including second means for sensing the leading edge of the fabric positioned by the transporting means.
- 16. The device of claim 15 wherein the initiating means is responsive to the second sensing means.
- 17. The device of claim 15 wherein the transporting means includes means for clamping the fabric, and in which the clamping means releases the fabric responsive to the second sensing means.
- 18. The device of claim 17 including means responsive to the second sensing means for returning the transporting means to obtain a subsequent fabric.
- 19. The device of claim 15 including belt means, means for driving the belt means, means responsive to the second sensing means for moving at least a portion of the belt means from a first inoperative position beneath the support plate to a second operative position above the support plate for engaging and moving the fabric.
- 20. The device of claim 19 including means for moving the belt means from the second position to first position after sewing a portion of the fabric.
