Claims
- 1. A composition comprising active components of at least herbs Fructus Pruni Mume, Pericarpium Zanthoxyli Bungean, Heba cum Radice Asari, Rhizoma Coptidis, Cortex Phellodendri, Rhizoma Zingiberis Officinalis, Radix Lteralis Aconiti Carmichaeli Praeparata, Ramulus Cinnamomi Cassiae, Radix Ginseng, and Radix Angelicae Sinensis.
- 2. A composition comprising active components of at least herbs Fructus Pruni Mume, Pericarpium Zanthoxyli Bungean, Heba cum Radice Asari, Rhizoma Coptidis, Cortex Phellodendri, Rhizoma Zingiberis Officinalis, Radix Lteralis Aconiti Carmichaeli Praeparata, Ramulus Cinnamomi Cassiae, Radix Ginseng, Radix Angelicae Sinensis, and Ganoderma lucidum.
- 3. A composition comprising active components of Ganoderma lucidum.
- 4. A composition comprising active components of Ganoderma ludicum and one other herb selected from the group consisting of Fructus Pruni Mume, Pericarpium Zanthoxyli Bungean, Heba cum Radice Asari, Rhizoma Coptidis, Cortex Phellodendri, Rhizoma Zingiberis Officinalis, Radix Lteralis Aconiti Carmichaeli Praeparata, Ramulus Cinnamomi Cassiae, Radix Ginseng, and Radix Angelicae Sinensis.
- 5. A composition comprising active components of Ganoderma ludicum, Fructus Pruni Mume, and Radix Angelicae Sinensis.
- 6. The composition of claim 1, wherein the active components are provided as herbs.
- 7. A composition comprising an aqueous extract of Fructus Pruni Mume, Pericarpium Zanthoxyli Bungean, Heba cum Radice Asari, Rhizoma Coptidis, Cortex Phellodendri, Rhizoma Zingiberis Officinalis, Radix Lteralis Aconiti Carmichaeli Praeparata, Ramulus Cinnamomi Cassiae, Radix Ginseng, and Radix Angelicae Sinensis.
- 8. A composition comprising an aqueous extract of Fructus Pruni Mume, Pericarpium Zanthoxyli Bungean, Heba cum Radice Asari, Rhizoma Coptidis, Cortex Phellodendri, Rhizoma Zingiberis Officinalis, Radix Lteralis Aconiti Carmichaeli Praeparata, Ramulus Cinnamomi Cassiae, Radix Ginseng, Radix Angelicae Sinensis, and Ganoderma lucidum.
- 9. A composition comprising an aqueous extract of Ganoderma lucidum.
- 10. A composition comprising an organic solvent extract of Fructus Pruni Mume, Pericarpium Zanthoxyli Bungean, Heba cum Radice Asari, Rhizoma Coptidis, Cortex Phellodendri, Rhizoma Zingiberis Officinalis, Radix Lteralis Aconiti Carmichaeli Praeparata, Ramulus Cinnamomi Cassiae, Radix Ginseng, and Radix Angelicae Sinensis.
- 11. A composition comprising an organic solvent extract of Fructus Pruni Mume, Pericarpium Zanthoxyli Bungean, Heba cum Radice Asari, Rhizoma Coptidis, Cortex Phellodendri, Rhizoma Zingiberis Officinalis, Radix Lteralis Aconiti Carmichaeli Praeparata, Ramulus Cinnamomi Cassiae, Radix Ginseng, Radix Angelicae Sinensis, and Ganoderma lucidum.
- 12. A composition comprising an organic solvent extract of Ganoderma lucidum.
- 13. A composition comprising active components of at least herbs Fructus Pruni Mume, Pericarpium Zanthoxyli Bungean, Heba cum Radice Asari, Rhizoma Coptidis, Cortex Phellodendri, Rhizoma Zingiberis Officinalis, Radix Lteralis Aconiti Carmichaeli Praeparata, Ramulus Cinnamomi Cassiae, Radix Ginseng, and Radix Angelicae Sinensis prepared by grinding and drying the herbs.
- 14. A composition comprising active components of at least herbs Fructus Pruni Mume, Pericarpium Zanthoxyli Bungean, Heba cum Radice Asari, Rhizoma Coptidis, Cortex Phellodendri, Rhizoma Zingiberis Officinalis, Radix Lteralis Aconiti Carmichaeli Praeparata, Ramulus Cinnamomi Cassiae, Radix Ginseng, Radix Angelicae Sinensis, and Ganoderma lucidum prepared by grinding and drying the herbs.
- 15. A composition comprising active components of an herb Ganoderma lucidum prepared by grinding and drying the herb.
- 16. The composition of claim 1, wherein Radix Codonopsis Pilosulae is substituted for Radix Ginseng.
- 17. A composition comprising active components of at least herbs Huang Qing, Ku Sen, and Ling Zhi.
- 18. The composition of claim 17, wherein the active components are provided as the herbs.
- 19. The composition of claim 18, wherein the herbs are present in relative amounts approximating 3:3:2 ratios.
- 20. The composition of claim 17, further comprising active components of an herb selected from the group consisting of Dong Gui, Ge Gen, and Su Zi.
- 21. The composition of claim 20 wherein the further active components are provided as herbs.
- 22. The composition of claim 21 wherein the further herbs are present in amounts approximately equal to those of Huang Qing or Ku Sen.
- 23. A composition comprising one or more herbs, the composition characterized in that, when the composition is administered to an individual suffering from asthmatic symptoms, at least one of the symptoms is reduced in severity or duration.
- 24. The composition of claim 23 wherein the herbs include Huang Qing, Ku Sen, Ling Zhi, and combinations thereof.
- 25. The composition of claim 24 wherein the approximate ratios of Huang Qing, Ku Sen, and Ling Zhi are 3:3:2.
- 26. The composition of claim 24 further comprising one or more herbs selected from the group consisting of Dong Gui, Ge Gen, Su Zi, and combinations thereof.
- 27. The composition of claim 26 wherein the further herb or herbs are present in amounts approximately identical to that of Huang Qing or Ku Sen.
- 28. A composition comprising MSSM-002.
- 29. A composition comprising MSSM-001.
- 30. The composition of claim 17 further comprising an additional component selected from the group consisting of adjuvants, cytokines, encapsulating agents, targeting agents, pharmaceutical additives, pharmaceutical excipients, and combinations thereof.
- 31. A method of reducing allergic symptoms by administering to an individual suffering from such symptoms an effective amount of the composition of claim 1.
- 32. The method of claim 31 further comprising administering corticosteroids to the individual.
- 33. A method of reducing asthmatic symptoms by administering to an individual suffering from such symptoms an effective amount of the composition of claim 1.
- 34. The method of claim 18a further comprising administering corticosteroids to the individual.
- 35. A method of preventing development of asthmatic symptoms by administering to an individual, prior to development of such symptoms, an effective amount of the composition of claim 1.
- 36. A method of preventing development of sensitivity to an asthmatic antigen, the method comprising steps of:
identifying an individual who is not sensitized to an asthmatic antigen; and administering to the individual, prior to exposure to the antigen, an effective amount of the composition of claim 1.
- 37. A method of reducing allergic symptoms by administering to an individual suffering from such symptoms an effective amount of the MSSM-001 formulation.
- 38. A method of reducing allergic symptoms by administering to an individual suffering from such symptoms an effective amount of the MSSM-002 formulation.
- 39. A method of reducing allergic symptoms by administering to an individual suffering from such symptoms an effective amount of the active components of at least herbs Huang Qing, Ku Sen, and Ling Zhi.
- 40. The method of claim 39 wherein the active components are provided as the herbs.
- 41. The method of claim 39 wherein the herbs are present in relative amounts approximating 3:3:2 ratios.
- 42. A method of identifying herbs useful in treating allergies, the method comprising step of:
providing herbs; contacting an animal model of allergies with the herbs; and assessing the animal's response to an antigen.
- 43. The method of claim 42 wherein the step of assessing comprises measuring plasma histamine levels.
- 44. The method of claim 42 wherein the step of assessing comprises measuring IgE levels.
- 45. The method of claim 42 wherein the animal model of allergies is a mouse model of allergies.
- 46. The method of claim 42 wherein the step of assessing comprises observing the animal for physical signs of allergic symptoms.
- 47. The method of claim 42 wherein the step of assessing comprises observing peak expiratory flow.
- 48. The method of claim 42 wherein the step of assessing comprises measuring body temperature.
- 49. An herbal composition identified by the method of claim 42.
- 50. An herbal composition wherein administration of the herbal composition to an animal model of allergy results in a decrease in allergic signs and symptoms.
- 51. An herbal composition wherein administration of the herbal composition to an animal model of allergy results in a decrease in IgE levels.
