Claims
- 1. A compound of the formula ##STR12## wherein X is hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, a trifluoromethyl group, or a (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4) alkyl group,
- Y is a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, or a trifluoromethyl group, and
- Z is a (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4)alkoxy group having one or more hydrogen atom replaced by a (C.sub.2 -C.sub.4) (alkenyl group, or a (C.sub.2 -C.sub.4)alkynyl group.
- 2. A compound according to claim 1 wherein Y is a hydrogen atom.
- 3. A compound according to claim 2 wherein X is a halogen atom.
- 4. A compound according to claim 3 wherein Z is a group of the formula ##STR13## wherein Z.sup.1 is a (C.sub.2 -C.sub.4)alkenyl group or a (C.sub.2 -C.sub.4)-alkynyl group.
- Z.sup.2 is a hydrogen atom or (C.sub.1 -C.sub.3)alkyl group, and n is 0 or 1.
- 5. A compound according to claim 4 wherein Z.sup.2 is a methyl group and n is 0.
- 6. A compound according to claim 2 wherein X is a chlorine atom and Z is an allyloxy or (2-propynyl)oxy group.
- 7. A compound according to claim 6 wherein Z is an allyloxy group.
- 8. A compound according to claim 6 wherein Z is a (2-propynyl)oxy group.
- 9. A herbicidal composition which comprises a compound according to claim 1 and an agronomically-acceptable carrier.
- 10. A composition according to claim 9 which also comprises a surfactant.
- 11. A method of controlling weeds which comprises applying to the surface of the growth medium prior to the emergence of the weeds from the growth medium a compound according to claim 1 in an amount sufficient to control the growth of the weeds.
- 12. The method of claim 11 wherein the compound is applied at a rate of about 0.1 to about 12 pounds per acre.
- 13. A method of controlling weeds which comprises applying to weed seedlings a compound according to claim 1 in an amount sufficient to control the growth of the seedlings.
- 14. The method of claim 13 wherein the compound is applied at a rate of about 0.1 to about 12 pounds per acre.
