A method for killing and preventing the growth of unwanted vegetation on fallow wheatland between the time of harvesting the wheat crop and the time of the next planting of winter wheat which method comprises applying to the locus to be treated an herbicidally-effective amount of a compound of the formula: ##EQU1##wherein R is C.sub.1 -C.sub.7 alkyl,
- or halogenated C.sub.1 -C.sub.7 alkyl, each halogen being independently selected from the group consisting of fluorine, chlorine, and bromine;
- R.sup.4 is hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.7 alkyl;
- R.sup.5 is hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.7 alkyl, C.sub.2 -C.sub.7 alkenyl, or C.sub.3 -C.sub.7 cycloalkyl; and
- R.sup.6 is hydrogen, C.sub.2 -C.sub.7 alkenyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.7 cycloalkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxy, or a substituted or unsubstituted C.sub.1 -C.sub.7 alkyl, the substituents being selected from the group consisting of halo, hydroxy, cyano, or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxy, except that R.sup.5 and R.sup.6 cannot both be hydrogen or a C.sub.3 -C.sub.7 cycloalkyl; and,
- tautomers of (I) wherein R.sup.4 is hydrogen; and
- when R.sup.4 is hydrogen, the alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, and ammonium salts thereof.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the herbicidally-effective compound is 1-(5-t-butyl-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl)-1,3-dimethylurea.
- 3. The method of claim 2 wherein the 1-(5-t-butyl-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl)-1,3-dimethylurea is applied at a rate of from about 0.5 to about 2 pounds per acre.
- 4. The method of claim 2 wherein the 1-(5-t-butyl-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl)-1,3-dimethylurea is applied at a rate of from about 0.5 to about 1.0 pound per acre.
