Claims
- 1. A compound of the following general formula, including isomers and tautomers thereof: ##STR18## wherein: R.sup.1 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen; optionally substituted C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl; C.sub.2-6 alkenyl; C.sub.2-6 alkynyl; optionally substituted C.sub.3-6 cycloalkyl; C.sub.5-6 cycloalkenyl wherein the said substituted alkyl or cycloalkyl group is substituted with a substitutent selected from the group consisting of alkoxy, alkylthio and optionally substituted phenyl; optionally substituted phenyl; alkyl sulfonyl; optionally substituted benzene sulfonyl; C.sub.2-6 acyl group; and an inorganic or organic cation;
- R.sup.2 is selected form the group consisting of optionally substituted C.sub.1-6 alkyl; C.sub.2-6 alkenyl; optionally substituted C.sub.3-6 cycloalkyl; C.sub.5-6 cycloalkenyl; C.sub.2-6 haloalkenyl; C.sub.2-6 alkynyl; C.sub.2-6 haloalkynyl wherein the said substituted alkyl or cycloalkyl is substituted with a substituent selected from the group consisting of halogen, alkoxy, alkylthio and optionally substituted phenyl; and optionally substituted phenyl;
- R.sup.3 is selected from the group consisting of C.sub.1-6 alkyl; C.sub.1-6 haloalkyl; C.sub.2-6 alkenyl; C.sub.3-6 cycloalkyl; C.sub.5-6 cycloalkenyl; C.sub.2-6 alkynyl; and optionally substituted phenyl; wherein any carbon-containing substitutents on an R.sup.1 and R.sup.3 alkyl contains up to 6 carbon atoms; and
- R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 together with the carbon to which they are attached form a substituted or unsubstituted saturated or partially saturated sulfur-containing ring containing 3 to 10 ring atoms, which ring can be bridged or fused and can contain substituents selected from the group consisting of hydrogen; C.sub.1-6 alkyl; C.sub.2-6 alkenyl; C.sub.2-6 alkynyl; substituted C.sub.1-6 alkyl wherein the alkyl group is substituted with a substituent selected from the group consisting of alkoxy, alkylthio and optionally substituted phenyl; optionally substituted phenyl; oxo; C.sub.2-6 acyl; C.sub.1-6 alkoxy; C.sub.1-6 alkylthio; C.sub.2-6 alkoxycarbonyl; C.sub.3-6 (alkoxyimino) alkyl; C.sub.1-6 ketal; and C.sub.1-6 carboxylic acid.
- 2. A compound according to claim 1: ##STR19## wherein: the polyatomic ring containing X and Y is a substituted or unsubstituted, saturated or partially saturated, heterocyclic ring containing 5, 6 or 7 ring atoms comprising one or more sulfur atoms and the ring substitutents are selected from the group consisting of hydrogen; C.sub.1-6 alkyl; C.sub.2-6 alkenyl; substituted C.sub.1-6 alkyl wherein the alkyl group is substituted with a substituent selected from the group consisting of C.sub.1-6 alkoxy, C.sub.1-6 alkylthio; and optionally substituted phenyl; optionally substituted phenyl; oxo; C.sub.1-6 acyl; C.sub.1-6 alkoxy; C.sub.1-6 alkylthio; C.sub.1-6 alkoxycarbonyl; C.sub.3-6 (alkoxyimino) alkyl; C.sub.1-6 ketal; and C.sub.1-6 carboxylic acid.
- 3. A compound according to claim 1 selected from the group:
- 8-[1-(Ethoxyimino)butyl]-9-hydroxy-6-oxa-2-thiaspiro[4.5]dec-8-en-7-one;
- 8[1-(Allyloxyimino)butyl]-9-hydroxy-6-oxa-2-thiaspiro[4.5]dec-8-en-7-one;
- 8-[1-[(2-Chloro-2-propenyl)oxyimino]butyl]-9-hydroxy-6-oxa-2-thiaspiro[4.5]dec-8-en-7-one;
- 8-[1-[(3-Chloro-2-propenyl)oxyimino]butyl]-9-hydroxy-6-oxa-2-thiaspiro[4.5]dec-8-en-7-one;

- 4. A compound as claimed in one of claims 1 and 2, wherein R.sup.1 is hydrogen or an alkali metal cation.
- 5. A compound as claimed in one of claims 1 and 2, wherein R.sup.2 is ethyl, allyl, 2-chloroallyl or 3-chloroallyl.
- 6. A compound as claimed in one of claims 1 and 2, wherein R.sup.3 is ethyl or n-propyl.
- 7. A compound as claimed in claim 2 wherein the substituents on the polyatomic chain XY in formula (6) are, independently, hydrogen or methyl.
- 8. A plant growth inhibiting, plant damaging, or plant killing composition comprising a compound according to claim 1 and an inert carrier therefor.
- 9. A method for regulating the growth of a plant which process comprises applying to the plant, to the seed of the plant, or to the growth medium of the plant, an effective amount of a compound according to claim 1.
- 10. A method for selectively inhibiting, damaging or killing weed grasses in a broadleaf crop which comprises applying to the crop or its locus an effective amount of a compound according to claim 1.
- 11. A plant growth regulating composition comprising a compound according to claim 1 and an inert carrier therefor.
