Claims
- 1. A compound of the formula: ##STR1347## where R.sub.1 is ##STR1348## M=O or S(O).sub.G ; G=0 or 2;

- R.tbd.H; C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 alkyl; C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 alkenyl; C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 alkynyl; C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl substituted with one to four substituents selected from 0-3 F, 0-3 Cl, 0-3 Br, 0-2 OCH.sub.3, 0-1 cyano, 0-1 CO.sub.2 R.sub.1 ' where R.sub.1 ' is C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 alkyl; CO.sub.2 R.sub.1 '; C.sub.2 -C.sub.4 alkenyl substituted with 1-3 Cl; C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 cycloalkyl; C.sub.5 -C.sub.6 cycloalkenyl; C.sub.5 -C.sub.6 cycloalkyl substituted with substituents selected from 1-3 CH.sub.3 or one of CH.sub.3 CH.sub.2, Cl, OCH.sub.3 ; C.sub.4 -C.sub.7 cycloalkylalkyl; ##STR1349## where T.sub.1 is ##STR1350## or a single bond; where

- with the provisos that:
- (1) when Y contains .ltoreq.4 carbon atoms, R contains .ltoreq.4 carbon atoms;
- (2) when X is Cl, then Y is Cl;
- (3) when X and Y are both H, ten R is .ltoreq.4 carbon atoms;
- (4) when T is --N--OR.sub.1.sup.III, then R contains .ltoreq.5 carbon atoms; and their agriculturally suitable salts.
- 2. A composition of claim 1 where
- X is CH.sub.3, OCH.sub.3 or OCH.sub.2 CH.sub.3 and Y is H, C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 alkyl, CH.sub.2 OCH.sub.3, CH.sub.2 OCH.sub.2 CH.sub.3, --OCH.sub.2 CO.sub.2 --(C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 alkyl), ##STR1357## O--(C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 alkyl), O--(C.sub.3 -C.sub.4 alkenyl), NR.sub.7 R.sub.8 where R.sub.7 is H or CH.sub.3 or R.sub.8 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 alkyl.

- 8. A compound of claim 1 wherein R.sub.2 is H, F, Cl, Br, C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 alkyl or OCH.sub.3 and R.sub.3 is H para to the sulfonyl group.
- 9. The compound of claim 1 is 2-acetyl-N-[(4-methoxy-6-methyl-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)aminocarbonyl]-benzenesulfonamide.
- 10. The composition of claim 11 where the compound is 2-acetyl-N-[(4-methoxy-6-methyl-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)aminocarbonyl]-benzenesulfonamide.
- 11. A composition suitable for controlling the growth of undesired vegetation which comprises an effective amount of a compound selected from ##STR1360## where R.sub.1 is ##STR1361## M=O or S(O).sub.G ; G=0 or 2;
- R.sup.a is CH.sub.3 or CH.sub.3 CH.sub.2 ;
- R=H; C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 alkyl; C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 alkenyl; C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 alkynyl; C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl substituted with one to four substituents selected from 0-3 F, 0-3 Cl, 0-3 Br, 0-2 OCH.sub.3, 0-1 cyano, 0-1 CO.sub.2 R.sub.1 ' where R.sub.1 ' is C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 alkyl; CO.sub.2 R.sub.1 '; C.sub.2 -C.sub.4 alkenyl substituted with 1-3 Cl; C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 cycloalkyl; C.sub.5 -C.sub.6 cycloalkenyl; C.sub.5 -C.sub.6 cycloalkyl substituted with substituents selected from 1-3 CH.sub.3 or one of CH.sub.3 CH.sub.2, Cl, OCH.sub.3 ; C.sub.4 -C.sub.7 cycloalkylalkyl; ##STR1362## where T.sub.1 is ##STR1363## or a single bond; where

- with the provisos that:
- (1) when Y contains .ltoreq.4 carbon atoms, R contains .ltoreq.4 carbon atoms;
- (2) when X is Cl, then Y is Cl;
- (3) when X and Y are both H, then R is .ltoreq.4 carbon atoms;
- (4) when T is --N--OR.sub.1.sup.III, then R contains .ltoreq.5 carbon atoms; and their agriculturally suitable salts and at least one of the following; surfactant, solid or liquid diluent.
- 12. A composition of claim 11 where R.sub.4 and R.sub.5 are H and W is oxygen.
- 13. A composition of claim 12 where R.sub.2 is H, F, Cl, Br, C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 alkyl, OCH.sub.3 and R.sub.3 is H in the position para to the sulfonyl group.
- 14. A composition of claim 13 where R.sub.1 is ##STR1370##

- 16. A method for controlling the growth of undesired vegetation which comprises applying to the locus to be protected an effective amount of a compound selected from ##STR1372## where R.sub.1 is ##STR1373## M=O or S(O).sub.G ; G=0 or 2;
- R.sup.a is CH.sub.3 or CH.sub.3 CH.sub.2 ;
