Claims
- 1. A data storage device comprising:
a base; a cover sized to fit over the base to form an enclosure therein between; a disk assembly secured to the base; an actuator assembly secured to the base; and a metallic gasket extending about a periphery of the base, the metallic gasket coupling the base to the cover when compressed therein between and hermetically sealing the enclosure.
- 2. The data storage device of claim 1 wherein the metallic gasket comprises a C-shaped cross sectional area.
- 3. The data storage device of claim 2 wherein the metallic gasket further comprises an inner layer and an outer layer, the outer layer providing the hermetic seal with the cover and the base.
- 4. The data storage device of claim 1 further comprising at least one set screw for coupling the cover to the base.
- 5. The data storage device of claim 3 wherein a coefficient of thermal expansion of the outer layer is substantially equivalent to a coefficient of thermal expansion of the base and the cover.
- 6. A data storage device comprising:
a base; a cover sized to mate with the base to form an enclosure therein between; a disk assembly secured to the base; an actuator assembly secured to the base; and an adhesive coupling the cover to the base, hermetically sealing the enclosure.
- 7. The data storage device of claim 1 wherein a coefficient of thermal expansion of the adhesive is substantially equivalent to a coefficient of thermal expansion of the base and the cover.
- 8. The data storage device of claim 1 wherein the adhesive is isolated from the enclosure by a gasket.
- 9. A data storage device comprising:
a base; a disk assembly secured to the base; an actuator assembly secured to the base; and a casing hermetically enclosing the base.
- 10. The data storage device of claim 9 wherein the casing comprises:
a first metallic housing; a second metallic housing; a seam seal formed between the first and second housing; and a sealing material provided within the seam seal.
- 11. A method of manufacturing a data storage device comprising the steps of::
providing a base; securing a disk assembly to the base; securing an actuator assembly to the base; placing a metallic gasket around a periphery of the base; and securing a cover to the base, thereby compressing the metallic gasket therein between and creating a hermetically sealed enclosure.
- 12. The method of claim 11 wherein the metallic gasket has a C-shaped cross-sectional area.
- 13. The method of claim 11 further comprising the step of providing the metallic gasket with an inner layer and an outer layer, the outer layer providing the hermetic seal with the cover and the base.
- 14. A method of manufacturing a disk drive comprising the steps of:
providing a base; securing a disk assembly to the base; securing an actuator assembly to the base; dispensing an adhesive around a periphery of the base; and coupling a cover to the base with the adhesive therein between, thereby creating a hermetically sealed enclosure.
- 15. The method of claim 14 further comprising the step of isolating the adhesive from the enclosure by placing a gasket between the adhesive and the enclosure.
- 16. A method of manufacturing a data storage device comprising the steps of:
providing a base; securing a disk assembly to the base; securing an actuator assembly to the base; securing the base within a first housing; placing a second housing over the first housing, creating an enclosure therein; and forming a seam seal between the first and second housing to hermetically seal the enclosure.
- 17. The method of claim 16 wherein the seam seal includes a sealing material.
