Claims
- 1. A method for the treatment of a warm-blooded animal afflicted with diarrhea which comprises administering to said animal in an amount sufficient to relieve said diarrhea, a compound selected from the group consisting of 1-R-4-(omega-substituted alkyl)-3,3-diphenyl-2-pyrrolidinones of the formula: ##STR9## wherein; R is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, lower alkyl, cyclohexyl and benzyl,
- R.sup.1 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, chloro, bromo, fluoro, trifluoromethyl and lower-alkoxy,
- R.sup.2 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, chloro, bromo and fluoro, and
- n is 1, 2 or 3 and the pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salts thereof.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the compound is 1-methyl-3,3-diphenyl-4-[(4-hydroxy-4-phenyl-1-piperidinyl)methyl]-2-pyrrolidinone.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein the compound is 1-methyl-3,3-diphenyl-4-[(4-hydroxy-4-phenyl-1-piperidinyl)methyl]-2-pyrrolidone fumarate (3:4).
- 4. An antidiarrheal composition comprising 1 to 500 mg. of a compound selected from the group consisting of 1-R-4-(omega-substituted alkyl)-3,3-diphenyl-2-pyrrolidinones of the formula: ##STR10## wherein; R is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, lower alkyl, cyclohexyl and benzyl,
- R.sup.1 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, chloro, bromo, fluoro, trifluoromethyl and lower-alkoxy,
- R.sup.2 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, chloro, bromo, and fluoro, and
- n is 1, 2 or 3, and the pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salts thereof in admixture with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.
- 5. The composition of claim 4 wherein the compound is 1-methyl-3,3-diphenyl-4-[(4-hydroxy-4-phenyl-1-piperidinyl)methyl]-2-pyrrolidinone.
- 6. The composition of claim 4 wherein the compound is 1-methyl-3,3-diphenyl-4-[(4-hydroxy-4-phenyl-1-piperidinyl)methyl]-2-pyrrolidinone fumarate (3:4).
