Claims
- 1. A process for the cationic polymerization of olefin monomer which comprises:
- (a) contacting polymerizable olefin, in the presence of a polar or non-polar solvent reaction medium, with a solid state, insoluble, salt catalyst system comprising:
- (i) solid state heterogeneous catalyst component comprising at least one salt selected from the group consisting of the salts of a strong acid and a Group III A, Group IV A, Group V A or Group VI A transition metal selected from the group consisting of yttrium, lanthanum, zirconium, hafnium, niobium, tantalum, molybdenum and tungsten, wherein said catalyst component is insoluble in the reaction medium; and
- (ii) cocatalyst component effective for promoting the carbocationic catalytic activity of said catalyst component; and
- (b) maintaining contact between said polymerizable olefin monomer, said catalyst component and said cocatalyst component at a temperature and for a period of time sufficient to effect polymerization of said olefin monomer.
- 2. The process according to claim 1, wherein said cocatalyst component is selected from the group consisting of water, lower alkanols, alkyl halides, inorganic acids, carboxylic acids, sulfonic acids and mixtures thereof.
- 3. The process according to claim 1, wherein said strong acid is selected from the group consisting of trifluoromethanesulfonic acid, fluorosulfonic acid, sulfuric acid, hydrobromic acid, hydrochloric acid, hydrofluoric acid, perchloric acid and nitric acid.
- 4. The process according to claim 1, wherein said cocatalyst component is added to the reaction medium before the addition thereto of said olefin monomer.
- 5. The process according to claim 1, wherein said cocatalyst component is added to the reaction medium after the addition thereto of said olefin monomer.
- 6. The process according to claim 1, wherein said cocatalyst component is added to the reaction medium simultaneously with the addition thereto of said olefin monomer.
- 7. The process according to claim 3, wherein said olefin monomer comprises at least one olefin selected from the group consisting of propylene, 1-butene, isobutene, 1-pentene, 1-hexene, 1-octene, 1-decene, styrene and alpha-methylstyrene.
