Claims
- 1. A textile softening composition which comprises a fabric softening effective amount of a quaternary ammonium salt having mono-, di-, and tri-ester components of the following formulae (I)-(III): ##STR11## wherein: X, X' and X" are the same or different and are selected from straight or branched chain, optionally substituted oxyalkylene or polyoxyalkylene groups having from 2-6 carbon atoms, where the oxyalkylene units number from about 1-10 and each R group is individually selected from straight or branched chain, optionally substituted alkyl groups having from 11 to 23 carbon atoms and an Iodine Value of from 3 to about 90; Y is an alkylphenyl group or a straight or branched chain optionally substituted C.sub.1 to C.sub.6 alkyl or alkylene group; and Z.sup.- represents a softener compatible anion; wherein said diester component (II) comprises greater than about 55 wt % and said triester component (III) comprises less than about 25 wt % based on the total amount said quaternary ammonium salt.
- 2. The composition of claim 1 wherein the cis/trans isomer ratio of said quaternary ammonium salt is the range of from about 80/20 to 95/5.
- 3. The composition of claim 1 wherein the cis/trans ratio is greater than about 90/10.
- 4. The composition of claim 1 wherein said quaternary ammonium salt comprises 3-50% by weight based on the total weight of the composition.
- 5. The composition of claim 1 wherein said quaternary ammonium salt comprises greater than about 55 wt % diester component (II) and less than about 25 wt % triester (E) component.
- 6. The composition of claim 1 wherein said quaternary ammonium salt comprises greater than about 60 wt % diester component (II) and less than about 20 wt % triester (III) component.
- 7. The composition of claim 1 wherein each R group is selected from a hydrocarbon radical having from 16 to 22 carbon atoms and an Iodine value from about 20 to about 90.
- 8. The composition of claim 1 wherein each of X, X' and X" are the same or different and are selected from straight on branched chain, optionally substituted oxyalklene or polyoxyalkylene groups having from 3-6 carbon atoms.
- 9. A process for the preparation of a quaternary ammonium salt which comprises reacting, at a temperature of from about 170.degree. C. to 250.degree. C.:
- I) a C.sub.12 -C.sub.23 substituted or unsubstituted fatty acid or mixture of fatty acids having an Iodine Value of from about 3 to about 90, with
- II) an alkanolamine of the formula: ##STR12## wherein R, R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are independently selected from C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 hydroxyalkyl groups, wherein the molar ratio of said fatty acid to alkanol amine is from about 1.4-2.0, and wherein said reaction temperature is increased from about 70.degree. C. to a range of from about 170.degree. to 250.degree. C., wherein the rate of temperature increase is maintained at an average rate of greater than about 0.4.degree. C. per minute in order to obtain an ester composition with greater than about 55 wt % diester component and less than about 25 wt % triester component and alkylating same in order to obtain the improved quaternary ammonium salt product.
- 10. The process of claim 9 wherein the temperature of the reaction is increased at a rate of greater than about 0.8.degree. C. per minute from a starting temperature of 70.degree. C. up a temperature in the range of from about 170.degree. C. to 250.degree. C.
- 11. The process of claim 10 wherein the temperature of the reaction is increased at a rate of greater than about 0.8.degree. C. to about 3.degree. C. per minute from a starting temperature of 70.degree. C. up a temperature of from about 170.degree. C. to 250.degree. C.
- 12. The process of claim 10 wherein said fatty acid is a substituted or unsubstituted C.sub.16 -C.sub.22 fatty acid having an Iodine value of from about 40 to 60.
- 13. The process of claim 10 wherein said fatty acid is a substituted or unsubstituted C.sub.16 -C.sub.22 fatty acid having an Iodine value of from about 45 to 55.
- 14. The process of claim 12 wherein said fatty acid is derived from tallow, soy, palm, palm kernel, rape seed, canola, tall oil, lard or mixtures thereof.
- 15. The process of claim 12 wherein said fatty acid is derived from partially hydrogenated tallow, soy, palm, palm kernel, rape seed, canola, tall oil, lard or mixtures thereof.
- 16. The process of claim 9 wherein said alkanolamine is selected from the group consisting of triethanolamine, propanol diethanolamine, ethanol diisopropanolamine, triisopropanol amine, diethanolisopropanol amine, ethanoldiisobutanolamine, diethanolisobutanolamine and mixtures thereof.
- 17. The process of claim 9 wherein the molar ratio of fatty acid to alkanol amine is in the range of from about 1.60 to 1.90.
- 18. The process of claim 9 wherein the molar ratio of fatty acid to alkanol amine is in the range of from about 1.68 to 1.72.
- 19. The process of claim 9 wherein said fatty acid has less than about 10% trans isomer.
- 20. The process of claim 9 wherein the alkylating agent is selected from the group consisting of methyl chloride, benzyl chloride, ethyl chloride, diethyl sulfate, dimethyl carbonate, trimethyl phosphate, dimethyl sulfate or mixtures thereof.
- 21. The process of claim 9 wherein a solvent is not employed.
- 22. A quaternary ammonium salt derived from reaction of a fatty acid and an alkanolamine said quaternary ammonium salt comprises mono-, di-, and tri-ester components of the following formulae (I)-(III): ##STR13## wherein: X, X' and X" are the same or different and are selected from straight or branched chain, optionally substituted oxyalkylene or polyoxyalkylene groups having from 2-6 carbon atoms, where the oxyalkylene units number from about 1-10, each R group is individually selected from straight or branched chain, optionally substituted alkyl or alkylene groups having from 11 to 23 carbon atoms, Y is and alkylphenyl group or a straight or branched chain optionally substituted C.sub.1 to C.sub.6 alkyl or alkylene group; and Z.sup.- represents a softener compatible anion; wherein said diester component (II) comprises greater than about 55 wt % and said triester component (III) comprises less than about 25 wt % based on the total amount said quaternary ammonium salt.
- 23. A quaternary ammonium compound which is derived from the reaction of a fatty acid and an ether alkanolamine, wherein said quaternary ammonium compound is of the general formula (IV): ##STR14## wherein n is an integer from 1 to 2, R is a C.sub.5 to C.sub.23 straight or branched chain, optionally substituted alkyl or alkylene group, each X can be the same or different and is selected from straight or branched chain, optionally substituted oxyalkylene or polyoxyalkylene groups having from 2-6 carbon atoms; each Q can be the same or different and is selected from a oxyalkylene or polyoxyalkylene group, or a straight or branched chain, optionally substituted alkyl, alkylene, alkyl phenyl, hydroxyalkyl, or hydroxyalkylene group, wherein at least one of said Q groups is a C.sub.2 to C.sub.6 linear or branched chain oxyalkylene or polyoxyalkylene capped with a C.sub.1 to C.sub.6 alkyl, or an alkyl phenyl group; and Z.sup.- is a compatible anion.
- 24. The quaternary ammonium compound of claim 23 wherein R is a C.sub.7 to C.sub.21, straight or branched chain, optionally substituted alkyl or alkylene group.
- 25. The quaternary ammonium compound of claim 23 wherein R is a C.sub.11 to C.sub.17 straight or branched chain, optionally substituted alkyl or alkylene group.
- 26. The quaternary ammonium compound of claim 23 wherein R is a C.sub.13 to C.sub.17 straight or branched chain, optionally substituted alkyl group.
- 27. The quaternary ammonium compound of claim 23 wherein said quaternary ammonium compound comprises both mono- and diester components, and said diester component comprises at least 70 wt % based on the amount of quaternary ammonium compound.
- 28. A process for the preparation of a high diester quaternary ammonium mixture which comprises reacting:
- I.) a C.sub.11 -C.sub.23 substituted or unsubstituted fatty acid or mixture of fatty acids having an Iodine Value of from about 20 to about 90, with
- II) an ether alkanolamine of the formula: ##STR15## wherein R is a C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 alkyl ether, and each of R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 is independently selected from C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 hydroxyalkyl groups,
- wherein the molar ratio of said fatty acid to ether alkanol amine is from about 1.4 to about 2.0, and quaternizing same in order to obtain an improved high diester quaternary ammonium mixture.
- 29. The process of claim 25 wherein said fatty acid is a substituted or unsubstituted C.sub.16 -C.sub.22 fatty acid having an Iodine value of from about 40 to 60.
- 30. The process of claim 25 wherein said fatty acid is derived from tallow, soy, palm, palm kernel, rape seed, canola, tall oil, lard or mixtures thereof.
- 31. The process of claim 25 wherein said fatty acid is derived from partially hydrogenated feedstock selected from tallow, soy, palm, palm kernel, rape seed, canola, tall oil, lard or mixtures thereof.
- 32. The process of claim 25 wherein said ether alkanolamine is selected from the group consisting of methoxyethyldiethanolamine, methoxypropyldiethanolamine and mixtures thereof.
- 33. The process of claim 25 wherein the molar ratio of fatty acid to alkanol amine is in the range of from about 1.60 to 1.90.
- 34. The process of claim 25 wherein the quaternizing agent is selected from the group consisting of methyl chloride, benzyl chloride, ethyl chloride, diethyl sulfate, dimethyl carbonate, trimethyl phosphate, dimethyl sulfate or mixtures thereof.
- 35. The process of claim 25 wherein the quatemizing agent is methyl chloride.
- 36. The process of claim 25 which is conducted in bulk or in the presence of a solvent.
- 37. The process of claim 36 wherein said solvent is selected from the group consisting of C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alcohols, glycols, fatty acid, mono-, di-, or tri-glycerides, and mixtures thereof.
- 38. A textile softening composition which comprises the high diester quaternary ammonium compound of claim 23.
- 39. A method for softening textiles which comprises applying thereto a softening effective amount of the quaternary ammonium of claim 22.
- 40. A method for softening textiles which comprises applying thereto a softening effective amount of the composition of claim 38.
