Claims
- 1. An apparatus, comprising:
a cold plate; an electronic device coupled to the cold plate, the electronic device is to generate heat; a heat exchanger coupled to the cold plate; a magnetic pump coupled to the cold plate and to the heat exchanger, the magnetic pump is to pump a fluid along a fluid path connecting the cold plate and the heat exchanger, wherein the fluid is to remove heat from the cold plate, and wherein the heated fluid is cooled by the heat exchanger.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the magnetic pump pumps the fluid using magnetic force generated by an electromagnetic coil.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the electronic device is an integrated circuit.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the electronic device is a processor or a chipset
- 5. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the magnetic pump comprises:
a first single poppet valve having a center inlet, a first outlet and a second outlet, the first and second outlets are opened in opposite direction and a valve body having an adjustable gap, the center inlet being disposed between the first outlet and the second outlet.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 5, wherein the magnetic pump further comprises:
a second single poppet valve having a center outlet, a first inlet and a second inlet, the first and second inlets are opened in opposite direction and a valve body having an adjustable gap, the center outlet being disposed between the first inlet and the second inlet.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 6, wherein the magnetic pump further comprises:
a first chamber formed between the first outlet and the first inlet wherein fluid is communicatively coupled; and a second chamber formed between the second outlet and the second inlet wherein fluid is communicatively coupled and wherein fluid is to be pumped out of the center outlet from the first chamber and then fluid is to be pumped out of the center outlet from the second chamber.
- 8. A method comprising:
cooling an electronic device in a computer system using fluid within a closed loop, the closed loop coupled to the electronic device, a magnetic pump, and a heat exchanger, wherein the magnetic pump is to enable the fluid to flow in the closed loop between the electronic device and the heat exchanger and to carry heat generated by the electronic device and cooled by the heat exchanger.
- 9. The method of claim 8, further comprising:
applying current to an electronic coil coupled to the magnetic pump to generate magnetic force used to operate the magnetic pump.
- 10. The method of claim 9, wherein the magnetic pump comprises a piston.
- 11. The method of claim 10, wherein the piston is moved by controlling magnetic field polarity.
- 12. The method of claim 10, wherein the magnetic pump further comprises a a first chamber and a second chamber, and wherein motion of the piston is to cause the fluid to move into the first chamber and out of the second chamber.
- 13. A method, comprising:
using a magnetic pump to pump a fluid used to remove heat generated by an electronic device, the heat is to be cooled by a heat exchanger coupled to the pump, the fluid is to flow along a continuous fluid path between the electronic device and the heat exchanger.
- 14. The method of claim 13, wherein the continuous fluid path between the electronic device and the heat exchanger is a closed loop.
- 15. The method of claim 13, wherein using the magnetic pump comprises:
generating magnetic force by applying current to an electromagnetic coil coupled to the magnetic pump.
- 16. The method of claim 15, wherein the magnetic force is to cause a piston inside the magnetic pump to move.
- 17. The method of claim 16, wherein movement of the piston is to cause the fluid to move from area to another area within the continuous path.
- 18. The method of claim 13, wherein the electronic device is a processor.
- 19. The method of claim 13, wherein the electronic device is a chipset or a graphics controller.
- 20. The method of claim 13, wherein the fluid is water, oil, or glycerin.
