Claims
- 1. A compound selected from the group consisting of: ##STR24## wherein: R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, and R.sup.4 are independently selected from the group consisting of H, ##STR25## (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4) alkyl and phenyl, wherein the alkyl or phenyl may independently be substituted by H, halogen, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.6) alkyl, amino carboxyl, or hydroxyl and
- R is selected from the group consisting of (C.sub.1 -C.sub.6) alkyl and phenyl, wherein the alkyl or phenyl may independently be substituted by H, halogen, alkyl having 1-6 carbons, amino, carboxyl and hydroxyl or the pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof provided that at least one of R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 is other than H or C.sub.1 alkyl or at least two of R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 are other than H.
- 2. A compound according to claim 1 wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.3 are hydrogen and R.sup.2 and R.sup.4 are ##STR26##
- 3. A compound according to claim 1 wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.3 are ethyl and R.sup.2 and R.sup.4 are methyl.
- 4. A compound according to claim 1 wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.3 are hydrogen and R.sup.2 and R.sup.4 are methyl.
- 5. A compound according to claim 1 wherein R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 are selected from the group consisting of (C.sub.1 -C.sub.6) alkyl, ##STR27## where R is (C.sub.1 -C.sub.6) alkyl.
- 6. The compound of claim 1 wherein at least two of R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 are other than H.
- 7. The compound of claim 1, wherein at least one of R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 is other than H and C.sub.1 alkyl.
- 8. A pharmaceutical composition, comprising an antihypertensive or high energy ionizing protective amount of the compound of claim 1; and
- a pharmaceutically-acceptable carrier thereof.
- 9. The pharmaceutical composition of claim 8 suitable for oral, parenteral, injectable or rectal administration.
- 10. The pharmaceutical composition of claim 9, wherein the compound is present in an amount of about 10 to 200 mg. per capsule or table suitable for oral administration.
- 11. A method of protecting from high-energy, ionizing radiation by administering to a subject in need of such protection a high-energy, ionizing radiation-protecting amount of a pharmaceutical composition comprising a compound selected from the group consisting of ##STR28## wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, and R.sup.4 are independently selected from the group consisting of H, --COOR, --COR, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.6) alkyl and phenyl, wherein the alkyl or phenyl may independently be substituted by H, halogen, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.6) alkyl, amino, carboxyl or hydroxyl and R is selected from the group consisting of (C.sub.1 -C.sub.6) alkyl and phenyl, wherein the alkyl or phenyl may independently be substituted by H, halogen, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.6) alkyl, amino, carboxyl or hydroxyl, or pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof.
- 12. The method of claim 11, wherein
- the compound is administered at a dosage of about 1 to 20 mg/kg of body weight.
- 13. The method of claim 11, wherein
- the composition further comprises a pharmaceutically-acceptable carrier.
