Claims
- 1. A modular electrical connector assembly, comprising:
(a) a housing having at least one plug-receiving receptacle, (b) at least one insert assembly arranged in said housing and comprising:
(i) an insert housing having a bottom surface and a top surface, said receptacle being defined above said top surface, said insert housing being a contiguous one-piece member, (ii) a first set of contact/terminal members each including a contact portion situated in said receptacle, a terminal portion extending beyond said bottom surface of said insert housing and an intermediate portion interconnecting said contact portion and said terminal portion, (iii) a second set of contact/terminal members each including a contact portion situated in said receptacle, a terminal portion extending beyond said bottom surface of said insert housing and an intermediate portion interconnecting said contact portion and said terminal portion, said contact/terminal members in said first set being substantially parallel to and geometrically different than said contact/terminal members in said second set, (iv) a first set of passageways defined in said insert housing receiving said contact/terminal members of said first set of contact/terminal members, and (v) a second set of passageways defined in said insert housing receiving said contact/terminal members of said second set of contact/terminal members, said contact/terminal members of said first and second sets being selectively situated in their respective passageways such that all adjacent ones of said contact/terminal members received in said first and second sets of passageways are geometrically different from one another.
- 2. The connector assembly of claim 1 wherein said insert housing comprises, when oriented upright, a base part, a cap part above said base part, and a shelf part extending forward of said cap part.
- 3. The connector assembly of claim 2 wherein each of said passageways comprises a first segment in said base part, a second segment in said cap part and a third segment in said shelf part.
- 4. The connector assembly of claim 3 wherein each of said segments of said passageways comprises a groove in which a portion of a contact/terminal is situated.
- 5. A connector assembly of claim 3 further comprising a retention element in at least one of said segments that engages and retains therein the portion of said contact/terminal situated therein.
- 6. A connector assembly of claim 5 wherein each of said segments of said passageways comprises a groove in which a portion of a contact/terminal is situated, and wherein each of said retention elements in said segment in said base part comprises a portion of said groove heat-staked to at least partially encompass the portion of the contact/terminal situated therein.
- 7. A connector assembly of claim 5 wherein each of said segments of said passageways comprises a groove in which a portion of a contact/terminal is situated, and wherein each of said retention elements in said segment in said cap part comprises a set of at least two projections extending from opposite walls of said groove toward each other and defining a space between them having distance less than the diameter of the portion of contact/terminal situated in an interference fit between said projections.
- 8. A connector assembly of claim 5 wherein each of said segments of said passageways comprises a groove in which a portion of a contact/terminal is situated, and wherein each of said retention elements in said segment in said shelf comprises a set of at least two projections extending from opposite walls of said groove toward each other.
- 9. A connector assembly of claim 8 wherein each of said retention elements comprises a set of three axially spaced apart projections.
- 10. A connector assembly of claim 1 wherein said insert housing is injection molded plastic forming a contiguous unitary member.
- 11. A connector assembly of claim 10 when said plastic is polycarbonate.
- 12. A connector assembly of claim 3 wherein each of said first and second segments of each of said passageways comprises a conduit extending at least partially through said base and cap parts respectively.
- 13. A connector assembly of claim 3 wherein said shelf part has top and bottom surfaces, and wherein said third segments of said passageways comprise grooves in said top and bottom surfaces of said shelf part.
- 14. A connector assembly of claim 3 wherein said shelf part has top and bottom surfaces, and wherein each said contact/terminal members of said first set has at least part of its intermediate portion situated adjacent said top surface of said shelf part.
- 15. A connector assembly of claim 3 wherein said shelf part has top and bottom surfaces, and wherein each of said contact/terminal members of said second set has at least a part of its intermediate portion situated adjacent said bottom surface of said shelf part.
- 16. A connector assembly of claim 1 wherein said base part has front and rear parts, and said contact/terminal members of said second set comprise first and second versions, said first version having at least part of its intermediate portion situated in said front part of said base part and said second version having at least part of its intermediate portion situated in said rear part of said base part, wherein no first version is situated adjacent another first version, and no second version is situated adjacent another second version.
- 17. A connector assembly according to claim 4 wherein said base part has a front surface and said grooves in said base part extend from said front surface rearwardly, said cap part has a bottom surface and said grooves in said cap part extend from said bottom surface upwardly, and said shelf part has top and bottom surfaces, and at least some of said grooves in said shelf part extend from said bottom surface upwardly.
- 18. The connector assembly of claim 1, further comprising:
a third set of contact/terminal members each including a contact portion situated in said receptacle, a terminal portion extending beyond said bottom surface of said insert housing and an intermediate portion interconnecting said contact portion and said terminal portion, said contact/terminal members in said third set being substantially parallel to and geometrically different than said contact/terminal members in said first and second sets, said insert housing defining a third set of passageways receiving said contact/terminal members in said third set of contact/terminal members, said contact/terminal members of said first, second and third sets being selectively situated in their respective passageways, such that adjacent ones of said contact/terminal members received in said first, second and third sets of passageways are geometrically different from one another.
- 19. The connector assembly of claim 18, wherein the connector assembly is an eight position, eight contact jack wherein the positions are designated 1-8 in sequence, said first set of contact/terminal members comprising two contact/terminal members designated R1, said contact portion of each of said first set of contact/terminal members being inclined and having a free edge facing a rear of said housing, said second set of contact/terminal members comprising four contact/terminal members designated R2, said contact portion of each of said second of contact/terminal members being inclined and having a free edge facing a rear of said housing, and said third set of contact/terminal members comprising two contact/terminal members designated F, said contact portion of each of said third set of contact/terminal members being inclined and having a free edge facing a front of said housing.
- 20. The connector assembly of claim 19, wherein said contact/terminal members of said first, second and third sets of contact/terminal members are arranged at positions 1-8 as follows: R2, R1, F, R1, F, R1, R2, R1.
- 21. The connector assembly of claim 20, wherein said contact/terminal members of said third set are arranged at positions 3 and 5.
- 22. The connector assembly of claim 1, wherein the connector assembly is a multi-level jack, said housing having a plurality of said plug-receiving receptacles arranged in upper and lower levels such that each of said upper and lower levels includes at least one of said receptacles, each of said receptacles being receivable of a respective plug, and wherein said connector assembly includes at least one of said insert assemblies arranged in a respective one of said at least one receptacle in said upper and said lower levels.
- 23. A modular electrical connector assembly, comprising:
(a) housing defining at least one plug-receiving receptacle, and (b) at least one insert assembly arranged in said housing and comprising
(i) an insert housing having a bottom surface, said insert housing being a contiguous one-piece injection molded member, (ii) a first set of contact/terminal members, each including a contact portion situated in said receptacle, a terminal portion extending beyond said bottom surface of said insert housing and an intermediate portion interconnecting said contact portion and said terminal portion, (iii) a second set of contact/terminal members, each including a contact portion situated in said receptacle, a terminal portion extending beyond said bottom surface of said insert housing and an intermediate portion interconnecting said contact portion and said terminal portion, and (iv) a third set of contact/terminal members, each including a contact portion situated in said receptacle, a terminal portion extending beyond said bottom surface of said insert housing and an intermediate portion interconnecting said contact portion and said terminal portion, said first, second and third sets of said contact/terminal members being geometrically different than one another, said insert housing defining a first set of passageways receiving said contact/terminal members in said first set of contact/terminal members, a second set of passageways receiving said contact/terminal members in said second set of contact/terminal members and a third set of passageways receiving said contact/terminal members in said third set of contact/terminal members, said contact/terminal members of said first, second and third sets being selectively situated in their respective passageways such that all adjacent ones of said contact/terminal members are different from one another.
