Claims
- 1. A high gloss coated sheet material comprising
- (a) a porous substrate sheet material having at least two oppositely disposed surfaces: and
- (b) a high gloss barrier coating layer on at least one surface of said substrate sheet material wherein said barrier coating comprising
- (i) a water dispersible crosslinkable polymer that is resistant to penetration by water when cured, and
- (ii) a water dispersible, film forming polymer:
- wherein said coating on said substrate when dried and cured provides a gloss reading of equal to or greater than about 50.
- 2. The coated sheet material of claim 1 wherein said porous substrate sheet material is selected from the group consisting of cellulose comprising materials, paper, cardboard, non-woven fibrous sheet materials, porous clays, and metal oxide aerogel comprising compositions.
- 3. The coated sheet material of claim 1 wherein said cross-linkable polymer has an average molecular weight before curing equal to or greater than 5,000 and is selected from the group consisting of: poly(dienes), poly(methacrylics), poly(acrylamides), poly(methacrylic acids), poly(vinyl ethers), poly(vinyl halides), poly(vinyl esters) and hydrolyzed or partially hydrolyzed versions thereof, polyvinyl alcohol, poly(styrenes), poly(oxides), poly(cabonates), poly(esters), poly(anhydrides), poly(urethanes), poly(siloxanes), poly(sulfones), poly(sulfonamides), poly(amides), poly(imines), poly(benzimidazoles), carbohydrates, poly(vinyl alcohol), poly(propyl alcohol), poly(butyl alcohol), poly(1-(hydroxylmethyl)ethylene), poly(1-hydroxyethyl)ethylene, styrene butadiene, hydroxylated polymers, and copolymers derived from any of the foregoing.
- 4. The coated sheet material as recited in claim 3, wherein said cross-linkable polymer is crosslinked by a crosslinking agent selected from the group consisting of glyoxals, epichlorohydrin, polymers comprising epichlorohydrin, copolymers comprising epichlorohydrin, metal ions, fatty acid complexes of metal ions, exposure to heat, ambient air, microwave radiation, high energy radiation, gamma radiation, x-rays, ultraviolet radiation, visible radiation, electron beams, corona discharges, and combinations thereof.
- 5. The coated sheet material as recited in claim 1, wherein said water-dispersible, film-forming polymer is selected from the group consisting of poly(butylene alcohol), poly(propylene alcohol), poly(vinyl alcohol), poly(hydroxyethyl acrylate), and polyvinyl acetate, and copolymers derived from any of the foregoing.
- 6. The coated sheet material as recited in claim 1, wherein the cross-linkable polymer and water dispersible polymer are selected from the group consisting of poly(vinyl alcohol)s, poly(butylene alcohol)s, poly(propylene alcohol)s, poly(1-(hydroxylmethyl)ethylene), poly(1-hydroxylethyl)ethylene), and copolymers derived therefrom.
- 7. The coated sheet material as recited in claim 1 which further comprises a release layer.
- 8. The coated sheet material as recited in claim 7 wherein said release layer comprises one or more compositions selected from the group consisting of a metal complex of a fatty acid compound, siloxanes, fluorinated molecules and fluorinated polymers.
- 9. The coated sheet material of claim 1, wherein said barrier layer coating additionally comprises any combination of fillers, dyes, pigments, dispersing agents, colorants, metallized layers, adhesives, printing, gloss, and texture.
- 10. The coated sheet material of claim 1 wherein said barrier layer provides resistance to penetration by water, oil, and grease.
- 11. The coated sheet material of claim 1 wherein said barrier layer provides resistance to penetration by oxygen.
- 12. The coated sheet material of claim 1 that is biodegradeable.
- 13. The coated sheet material of claim 1 that is recyclable.
- 14. An article comprised of the coated sheet material of claim 1.
- 15. A high gloss coated sheet material comprising
- (a) a cellulose-based porous sheet material, and
- (b) a high gloss barrier coating on at least one surface of said cellulose-based sheet material wherein said barrier coating comprises
- (i) a crosslinkable polymer that is resistant to penetration by water when cured and is selected from the group consisting of polyvinyl alcohols, polyacrylics, polyamines, polyvinyl acetates, and polyamine epichlorohydrins, and
- (ii) a water dispersible film forming polymer selected from the group consisting of polyvinyl alcohols, poly(hydroxyethyl acetate), polyvinyl acetates, copolymers from any of the foregoing, and hydrolyzed derivatives of the foregoing;
- wherein said coating on said substrate when dried and cured provides a gloss rating equal to or greater than 50.
- 16. The coated sheet material of claim 15 wherein said barrier coating layer additionally comprises any combination of fillers, dyes, pigments, dispersing agents, colorants, metallized layers, adhesives, printing, gloss, and texture.
- 17. The coated sheet material of claim 15 wherein said barrier coating layer further comprises a metal layer to enhance opacity and reflectivity of the high gloss barrier layer.
- 18. The coated sheet material of claim 15 which further comprises a release layer on top of the barrier coating layer, wherein said release layer comprises a material selected from the group consisting of metal complexes of fatty acids, siloxanes, fluorinated molecules and fluorinated polymers.
- 19. The coated sheet material of claim 15, wherein said cross-linkable polymer is crosslinked by a crosslinking agent selected from the group consisting of: glyoxals, epichlorohydrin, polymers comprising epichlorohydrin, copolymers comprising epichlorohydrin, metal ions, fatty acid complexes of metal ions, exposure to heat, ambient air, microwaves, high energy radiation, gamma radiation, x-rays, ultraviolet radiation, visible radiation, electron beams, corona discharges, and combinations thereof.
- 20. The coated sheet material of claim 15 wherein said barrier layer provides resistance to penetration by water, oil, and grease.
- 21. An article comprised of the coated sheet material of claim 15.
- 22. A coated sheet material comprising
- (a) a porous substrate sheet material having at least two oppositely disposed surfaces; and
- (b) a holographic image supporting barrier coating layer on at least one surface of said substrate sheet material wherein said barrier coating comprises
- (i) a water dispersible crosslinkable polymer that is resistant to penetration by water when cured, and
- (ii) a water dispersible, film forming polymer;
- wherein said coating on said substrate when dried and cured provides a holographic image on the surface of said substrate.
- 23. The coated sheet material of claim 22 wherein said porous substrate sheet material is selected from the group consisting of cellulose comprising materials, paper, cardboard, non-woven fibrous sheet materials, porous clays, and metal oxide aerogel comprising compositions.
- 24. The coated sheet material of claim 22 wherein said cross-linkable polymer has an average molecular weight before curing equal to or greater than 5,000 and is selected from the group consisting of: poly(dienes), poly(methacrylics), poly(acrylamides), poly(methacrylic acids), poly(vinyl ethers), poly(vinyl halides), poly(vinyl esters) and hydrolyzed or partially hydrolyzed versions thereof, poly(styrenes), poly(oxides), poly(carbonates), poly(esters), poly(anhydrides), poly(urethanes), poly(siloxanes), poly(sulfones), poly(sulfonamides), poly(amides), poly(imines), poly(benzimidazoles), carbohydrates, poly(vinyl alcohol), poly(propyl alcohol), poly(butyl alcohol), poly(1-hydroxylmethyl)ethylene), poly(1-hydroxyethyl)ethylene, styrene butadiene, hydroxylated polymers, and copolymers derived from any of the foregoing.
- 25. The coated sheet material as recited in claim 24, wherein said cross-linkable polymer is crosslinked by a crosslinking agent selected from the group consisting of glyoxals, epichlorohydrin, polymers comprising epichlorohydrin, copolymers comprising epichlorohydrin, metal ions, fatty acid complexes of metal ions, exposure to heat, ambient air, microwave radiation, high energy radiation, gamma radiation, x-rays, ultraviolet radiation, visible radiation, electron beams, corona discharges, and combinations thereof.
- 26. The coated sheet material as recited in claim 22, wherein said water-dispersible, film-forming polymer is selected from the group consisting of poly(butylene alcohol), poly(propylene alcohol), poly(vinyl alcohol), poly(hydroxyethyl acrylate), and polyvinyl acetate, and copolymers derived from any of the foregoing.
- 27. The coated sheet material as recited in claim 22, wherein the cross-linkable polymer and water dispersible polymer are selected from the group consisting of poly(vinyl alcohol)s, poly(butylene alcohol)s, poly(propylene alcohol)s, poly(1-(hydroxylmethyl)ethylene), poly(1-hydroxylethyl)ethylene), and copolymers derived therefrom.
- 28. The coated sheet material as recited in claim 22 which further comprises a release layer.
- 29. The coated sheet material as recited in claim 28 wherein said release layer comprises one or more compositions selected from the group consisting of a metal complex of a fatty acid compound, siloxanes, fluorinated molecules and fluorinated polymers.
- 30. The coated sheet material of claim 22, wherein said holographic image supporting barrier layer coating additionally comprises any combination of fillers, dyes, pigments, dispersing agents, colorants, metallized layers, adhesives, printing, gloss, and texture.
- 31. The coated sheet material of claim 22 wherein said holographic image supporting barrier layer provides resistance to penetration by water, oil, and grease.
- 32. The coated sheet material of claim 22 wherein said holographic image supporting barrier layer provides resistance to penetration by oxygen.
- 33. The coated sheet material of claim 22 that is biodegradeable.
- 34. The coated sheet material of claim 22 that is recyclable.
- 35. An article comprised of the coated sheet material of claim 22.
- 36. A coated sheet material comprising
- (a) a cellulose-based porous sheet material, and
- (b) a holographic image supporting barrier coating on at least one surface of said cellulosebases sheet material wherein said barrier coating comprising
- (i) a crosslinkable polymer that is resistant to penetration by water when cured and is selected from the group consisting of polyvinyl alcohols, polyacrylics, polyamines, polyvinyl acetates, and polyamine epichlorohydrins, and
- (ii) a water dispersible film forming polymer selected from the group consisting of polyvinyl alcohols, poly(hydroxyethyl acetate), polyvinyl acetates, copolymers from any of the foregoing, and hydrolyzed derivatives of the foregoing;
- wherein said coating on said substrate when dried and cured provides a holographic image on the surface of said porous substrate.
- 37. The coated sheet material of claim 36 wherein said barrier coating layer additionally comprises any combination of fillers, dyes, pigments, dispersing agents, colorants, metallized layers, adhesives, printing, gloss, and texture.
- 38. The coated sheet material of claim 36 wherein said barrier coating layer further comprises a metal layer to enhance opacity, reflectivity, and quality of the holographic image.
- 39. The coated sheet material of claim 36 which further comprises a release layer on top of the barrier coating layer, wherein said release layer comprises a material selected from the group consisting of metal complexes of fatty acids, siloxanes, fluorinated molecules and fluorinated polymers.
- 40. The coated sheet material of claim 36, wherein said cross-linkable polymer is crosslinked by a crosslinking agent selected from the group consisting of: glyoxals, epichlorohydrin, polymers comprising epichlorohydrin, copolymers comprising epichlorohydrin, metal ions, fatty acid complexes of metal ions, exposure to heat, ambient air, microwaves, high energy radiation, gamma radiation, x-rays, ultraviolet radiation, visible radiation, electron beams, corona discharges, and combinations thereof.
- 41. The coated sheet material of claim 36 wherein said barrier layer provides resistance to penetration by water, oil, and grease.
- 42. An article comprised of the coated sheet material of claim 36.
