Claims
- 1. A material comprising a substantially fully dense, complex, multi-phase, fine grained product of an incomplete reaction between reactants consisting essentially of AX, a source of B, a source of C, and, optionally, an amount of X, the reaction taking place under pressure and at an elevated temperature, said reaction product comprising at least one compound AX and at least one compound of varying stoichiometry selected from the group consisting of (A, B, C)X, (A, B)X, (A, C)X, and (B, C)X, wherein A, B and C are different materials selected from the group consisting of titanium, ziroonium, hafnium, vanadium, niobium, tantalum, chromium, molybdenum and tungsten and X is selected from the group consisting of boron, carbon, silicon and nitrogen.
- 2. The material of claim 1 wherein AX is tungsten carbide, the source of B is chromium carbide and the source of C is molybdenum carbide.
- 3. The material of claim 1 wherein AX is tungsten carbide, the source of B is titanium carbide and the source of C is tantalum carbide.
