Claims
- 1. A method for preparing a polymeric optical article having a refractive index in the range of approximately 1.58 to 1.70, which method includes providing
- a cross-linkable polymeric casting composition including an effective amount of
- A: an acrylic or methacrylic monomer which provides high rigidity and low colour dispersion characterized by an Abbe number of at least 35 to the final product;
- B: a di- or polythio compound;
- C: a di- or polyvinyl monomer; and optionally
- D: a polymerisable comonomer; and
- E: a heat and/or UV curing agent;
- mixing the polymeric casting composition and curing agent; and
- subjecting the mixture to a cross-inking step, wherein the acrylic or methacrylic monomer is selected from an acrylate or methacrylate derivative of the formula ##STR35## where R can be H or CH.sub.3 a= 1-3, b=1-3, m=0-6, n=0-6,
- S is a spacer group selected from one or more of the following ##STR36## or derivatives thereof; and wherein p=1-4.
- 2. An optical article having a high exhibiting rigidity, an Abbe number of at least 35 and a refractive index in the range of from approximately 1.58 to 1.70 prepared from a cross-linkable polymer casting composition including effective amounts of
- A: an acrylic or methacrylic monomer which provides high rigidity and an Abbe number of at least 35 to the final product;
- B: a di- or polythio compound;
- C: a di- or polyvinyl monomer; and optionally
- D: a polymerisable comonomer
- wherein the acrylic or methacrylic monomer is selected from an acrylate or methacrylate derivative of the formula ##STR37## where R can be H or CH.sub.3 a= 1-3, b=1-3, m=0-6, n=0-6,
- S is a spacer group selected from one or more of the following ##STR38## or derivatives thereof; and wherein p=1-4.
- 3. An optical article according to claim 2, wherein the optical article further exhibits a very low Yellowness Index and low density.
- 4. A method according to claim 1 wherein the acrylate or methacrylate derivative is a tricyclodecane dimethanol acrylate of the following formula ##STR39##
- 5. A method according to claim 1 wherein component A is present in amounts of from approximately 20 to 60% by weight based on the total weight of the casting composition.
- 6. A method according to claim 5, wherein component A is present in amount of from approximately 30 to 55% by weight, based on the total weight of the casting composition.
- 7. An optical article according to claim 2 wherein the acrylate or methacrylate derivative is a tricyclodecane dimethanol acrylate of the following formula
- 8. An optical article to claim 2 wherein component A is present in amounts of from approximately 20 to 60% by weight based on the total weight of the casting composition.
- 9. An optical article according to claim 8, wherein component A is present in amount of from approximately 30 to 55% by weight, based on the total weight of the casting composition.
- 10. A method according to claim 11 wherein the optical article has a refractive index in the range of approximately 1.6 to 1.70.
- 11. An optical article according to claim 2 wherein the optical article has a refractive index in the range of approximately 1.6 to 1.70.
- 12. A method according to claim 1 wherein the cross-linkable polymeric casting composition includes the polymerisable comonomer.
- 13. An optical article according to claim 2 wherein the cross-linkable polymeric casting composition includes the polymerisable comonomer.
