Claims
- 1. A multi-layer optical encapsulation, comprising:
an optical element disposed between opposing plates, each plate having a peripheral edge; metallization on the peripheral edge; and a metal seal soldered to the metalized edge of each plate.
- 2. The encapsulation of claim 1, wherein the optical element is a DCG HOE.
- 3. The encapsulation of claim 1, wherein the metalization includes chrome and nickel, or alloys thereof, followed by gold or platinum.
- 4. The encapsulation of claim 1, wherein the optical element has a peripheral edge which does not extend to the peripheral edges of the opposing plates.
- 5. The encapsulation of claim 1, wherein the metal seal is in the form of a foil or wire.
- 6. The encapsulation of claim 1, wherein the opposing plates are optically transparent, at least to wavelengths of interest.
- 7. The encapsulation of claim 6, wherein the opposing plates are glass.
- 8. A method of encapsulating a DCG HOE or other optical element between opposing plates, each plate having a peripheral edge, the method comprising the steps of:
metalizing the peripheral edges of the opposing plates; and soldering a metal seal to the metalized edges.
- 9. The method of claim 8, wherein vacuum deposition or sputtering is used to metalize the edges of the opposing plates.
- 10. The method of claim 8, wherein the metalization includes chrome and nickel, or alloys thereof, followed by gold or platinum.
- 11. A product using the process of claim 8.
