Claims
- 1. A method of registering a wireless mobile transceiver with a mobile communications network, comprising the steps of receiving, at the mobile transceiver, a high penetration signal transmitted by the network;
detecting at the mobile transceiver whether a low penetration signal which is transmitted by the network is received at greater than a predetermined signal quality, and, when said low penetration signal is detected at greater than said predetermined signal quality, transmitting from said mobile transceiver a registration signal such that the registration signal is received by the mobile communications network.
- 2. A method as claimed in claim 1, wherein the high penetration signal includes timing information concerning the timing of transmission of the high penetration signal and the registration signal is transmitted with a timing determined according to said timing information.
- 3. A method as claimed in claim 1, wherein the registration signal is transmitted such that the approximate location of the mobile transceiver is derivable from the registration signal by the mobile communications network.
- 4. A method as claimed in claim 1, wherein said low penetration signal is transmitted via a satellite and the registration signal is transmitted via said satellite.
- 5. Apparatus for registering a wireless mobile transceiver with a mobile communications network, comprising:
a receiver for receiving signals from the mobile communications network, means for detecting reception by said receiver of a high penetration signal transmitted by the network; means for detecting reception by said receiver of a low penetration signal transmitted by the network; and means for transmitting to the network a registration signal in response to reception of said low penetration signal at greater than a predetermined signal quality subsequent to reception of said high penetration signal, such that the registration signal is received by the network.
- 6. Apparatus as claimed in claim 5, including means for deriving timing information from said high penetration signal, wherein said means for transmitting said registration signal is arranged to transmit said registration signal with a timing determined according to said timing information.
- 7. Apparatus as claimed in claim 5, wherein said receiver. is arranged to receive said signals from a satellite and the means for transmitting is arranged to transmit said registration signal to said satellite.
- 8. A mobile communications terminal including apparatus as claimed in claim 5.
- 9. A method as claimed in claim 2, wherein the registration signal is transmitted such that the approximate location of the mobile transceiver is derivable from the registration signal by the mobile communications network.
- 10. A method as claimed in claim 2, wherein said low penetration signal is transmitted via a satellite and the registration signal is transmitted via said satellite.
- 11. A method as claimed in claim 3, wherein said low penetration signal is transmitted via a satellite and the registration signal is transmitted via said satellite.
- 12. Apparatus as claimed in claim 6, wherein said receiver. is arranged to receive said signals from a satellite and the means for transmitting is arranged to transmit said registration signal to said satellite.
- 13. A mobile communications terminal including apparatus as claimed in claim 6.
- 14. A mobile communications terminal including apparatus as claimed in claim 7.
