Claims
- 1. An optical element comprising:a substrate; a patterned, light-transmissive core on the surface of the substrate, the core having a refractive index; and a cladding at least partially enveloping the patterned, light-transmissive core, the cladding having a refractive index, whereinthe core has a glass transition temperature of about 80° C. or less; the cladding has a glass transition temperature of about 60° C. or less; and the refractive index of the cladding is less than the refractive index of the core, and whereinthe core and the cladding define an interface and the core and the cladding intermingle with each other at the interface.
- 2. The optical element of claim 1 wherein the core has a glass transition temperature of about 50° C. or less.
- 3. The optical element of claim 1 wherein the cladding has a glass transition temperature of about 40° C. or less.
- 4. The optical element of claim 1 wherein the cladding has a glass transition temperature of about 25° C. or less.
- 5. The optical element of claim 1 wherein the cladding is patterned and in conforming registration with the core.
- 6. The optical element of claim 1 further comprising a buffer layer between the substrate and the core, the buffer layer having a glass transition temperature of about 60° C. or less.
- 7. The optical element of claim 1, the optical element having an optical loss of about 0.1 or less dB/cm at wavelength of 600-900 mn.
- 8. The optical element of claim 1 wherein the substrate comprises a material selected from the group consisting of silicon, silicon oxide, gallium arsenide, silicon nitride, glass, quartz, plastics, ceramics, and crystalline materials.
- 9. The optical element of claim 1, the optical element comprising a waveguide.
- 10. The optical element of claim 1 wherein the optical element comprises a slab waveguide.
- 11. The optical element of claim 1 wherein the optical element comprises a channel waveguide.
- 12. The optical element of claim 1 whereina) the patterned, light transmissive core is formed by imagewise partially polymerizing and developing a first photosensitive composition applied on the surface of the substrate, the first photosensitive composition comprising at least one first free radical polymerizable monomer, oligomer or polymer component having at least one ethylenically unsaturated group and at least one first photoinitiator; and b) the cladding is formed by polymerizing a second photosensitive composition applied on the patterned core, the second photosensitive composition comprising at least one second free radical polymerizable monomer, oligomer, or polymer component having at least one ethylenically unsaturated group and at least one second photoinitiator.
- 13. The optical element of claim 12 wherein in step (b), the second photosensitive composition is imagewise polymerized and developed such that the patterned second photosensitive composition forms a cladding imagewise enveloping and in register with the pattern of the core.
- 14. The optical element of claim 1 wherein the cladding and core have a Gardner index as described by ASTM D1544-80 of about 3 or less.
- 15. The optical element of claim 1, wherein there exists covalent bonding between the core and the cladding.
- 16. The optical element of claim 1, wherein the core is formed from a polymeric material, and the cladding is formed from a polymeric material.
- 17. The optical element of claim 16, wherein the polymeric material of the core is a polymerized acrylate, and wherein the polymeric material of the cladding is a polymerized acrylate.
- 18. The optical element of claim 16, wherein the polymeric material of the core is a polymer or copolymer of a polyoxyalkylene glycol acrylate, and wherein the polymeric material of the cladding is a polymer or copolymer of a polyoxyalkylene glycol acrylate.
- 19. An optical element comprising:a buffer layer, the buffer layer having a refractive index; a patterned, light-transmissive core on the surface of the buffer layer, the core having a refractive index; and a cladding at least partially enveloping the patterned, light-transmissive core, the cladding having a refractive index, whereinthe core has a glass transition temperature of about 80° C. or less; the cladding has a glass transition temperature of about 60° C. or less; and the refractive index of the cladding and the refractive index of the buffer layer are less than the refractive index of the core, and whereinthe core and the cladding define an interface and the core and the cladding intermingle with each other at the interface.
- 20. The optical element of claim 19 wherein the buffer layer has glass transition temperatures of about 60° C. or less.
- 21. The optical element of claim 19 wherein the core has glass transition temperature of about 50° C. or less.
- 22. The optical element of claim 21 wherein the core and the buffer layer have glass transition temperatures of about 40° C. or less.
- 23. The optical element of claim 21 wherein the core and the buffer layer have glass transition temperatures of about 25° C. or less.
- 24. The optical element of claim 19 wherein the buffer layer and the core define an interface, and wherein the buffer layer and the core intermingle at the interface.
- 25. The optical element of claim 19 wherein the core and the cladding define and interface, and wherein the core and cladding intermingle at their interface.
- 26. The optical element of claim 19 wherein the optical element comprises a slab waveguide.
- 27. The optical element of claim 19 wherein the optical element comprises a channel waveguide.
- 28. The optical element of claim 19, wherein there exists covalent bonding between the core and the cladding.
- 29. The optical element of claim 19, wherein the core is formed from a polymeric material, and the cladding is formed from a polymeric material.
- 30. The optical element of claim 29, wherein the polymeric material of the core is a polymerized acrylate, and wherein the polymeric material of the cladding is a polymerized acrylate.
- 31. The optical element of claim 29, wherein the polymeric material of the core is a polymer or copolymer of a polyoxyalkylene glycol acrylate, and wherein the polymeric material of the cladding is a polymer or copolymer of a polyoxyalkylene glycol acrylate.
