Claims
- 1. A nonlinear optical organic medium exhibiting a .chi..sup.(2) susceptibility of at least about 1.times.10.sup.-7 esu, an absence of interfering fluorescence in the wavelength range between about 0.3-3 .mu.m, an optical loss less than about 1.0 decibel per centimeter, a response time less than about 10.sup.-13 second, phase matching of fundamental and second harmonic frequencies, and a dielectric constant less than about 5; and wherein the medium comprises a noncentrosymmetric configuration of aligned molecules having a diphenoquinodimethane or naphthoquinodimethane conjugated structure.
- 2. A nonlinear optical organic medium in accordance with claim 1 wherein the aligned molecules correspond to the structure: ##STR8## where R is a substituent selected from hydrogen and alkyl groups.
- 3. A nonlinear optical organic medium in accordance with claim 1 wherein the aligned molecules correspond to the structure: ##STR9## where R is a substituent selected from hydrogen and alkyl groups.
