Claims
- 1. A precision, high capacity floppy disc memory system having low thermal deviation, comprising:
- a magnetic storage type floppy disc having a central mounting opening of a predetermined diameter;
- means including a central rotatable hub having an outer diameter equal to or slightly greater than said predetermined diameter for accurately mounting said magnetic storage type floppy disc for rotation about said central mounting opening in the disc, the opening in said disc therefore making a "line on line" or an interference fit with said mounting means;
- at least one head for magnetically reading and/or writing on said magnetic disc;
- means including a lead screw having a precision groove for selectively shifting the position of said head to different tracks on said storage disc;
- means for mounting the inner end of said lead screw fixed against longitudinal movement along the axis of said screw relative to said rotatable hub adjacent the center of said magnetic disc;
- carriage means for supporting said head in close physical proximity to said lead screw;
- tapered means secured to said carriage and resiliently mating with a single turn of the groove in said lead screw substantially in one plane only along the length of said lead screw and making contact with said lead screw at only two points or along only two lines to cause the magnetic head to precisely move to the radial position indicated by the orientation of said lead screw despite wear in said lead screw; said tapered means being in close physical proximity to said head;
- stepping motor means for rotating said lead screw to shift said head between tracks, said stepping motor means having more accurately located angular step positions spaced apart by a predetermined number of normal steps of said stepping motor means; and
- said apparatus further including means for actuating said stepping motor means in either direction by an angle equal to said predetermined number of steps to move said head between adjacent tracks which are less than 0.015 inch apart.
- 2. A high capacity floppy disc memory apparatus as defined in claim 1, wherein said stepper motor actuating means includes special logic circuit means for rapidly accelerating and then decelerating the rotor of said stepper motor in traversing said angle.
- 3. A precision high capacity floppy disc memory system as defined in claim 1 further comprising leaf spring means for mounting said stepper motor and biasing said lead screw substantially along the axis of said lead screw.
- 4. A high capacity floppy disc memory apparatus as defined in claim 1 further comprising:
- means for clamping said floppy disc firmly and accurately onto said disc mounting means.
- 5. A precision high capacity floppy disc memory system as defined in claim 1 wherein said system includes means for actuating said stepping motor to move said head between adjacent tracks which are substantially 1/100 of an inch apart.
- 6. A precision, high capacity floppy disc memory system having low thermal deviation for use with floppy discs having a central opening of a predetermined diameter comprising:
- means including a central shaft and associated hub having an outer diameter equal to or slightly greater than said predetermined diameter for accurately mounting a magnetic storage type floppy disc for rotation about a central opening in the disc, the opening in said disc making a "line-on-line" or an interference fit with said mounting means;
- at least one head for magnetically reading and/or writing on said magnetic disc;
- means including a lead screw having a precision groove for selectively shifting the position of said head to different tracks on said storage disc;
- means for mounting the inner end of said lead screw against longitudinal movement adjacent the center of said magnetic disc;
- carriage means for supporting said head in close physical proximity to said lead screw;
- means secured to said carriage and resiliently mating with the groove in said lead screw substantially in one plane only along the length of said lead screw to cause the magnetic head to precisely move to the radial position indicated by the orientation of said lead screw despite wear in said lead screw, said means secured to said carriage being in close physical proximity to said head;
- stepping motor means for rotating said lead screw to shift said head between tracks, said stepping motor means having more accurately located angular step positions spaced apart by a predetermined number of normal steps of said stepping motor means; and
- said apparatus further including means for actuating said stepping motor means in either direction by an angle equal to said predetermined number of steps to move said head between adjacent tracks which are less than 0.015 inch apart.
- 7. A precision high capacity floppy disc memory system as defined in claim 6 further comprising means including a leaf spring for mounting said stepper motor means and biasing said lead screw substantially along the axis of said lead screw toward said hub.
- 8. A precision high capacity floppy disc memory system as defined in claim 6 wherein said system includes means for actuating said stepping motor to move said head between adjacent tracks which are substantially 1/100 of an inch apart.
- 9. A precision, high capacity floppy disc memory system having low thermal deviation for use with floppy discs having a central opening of a predetermined size comprising:
- means including a central rotatable hub having an outer diameter equal to or slightly greater than said predetermined diameter for accurately mounting a magnetic storage type floppy disc for rotation about a central opening in the disc, the opening in said disc making a "line-on-line" or an interference fit with said mounting means;
- at least one head for magnetically reading and/or writing on said magnetic disc;
- means including a lead screw having a precision groove for selectively shifting the position of said head to different tracks on said storage disc;
- means for mounting the inner end of said lead screw against longitudinal movement adjacent the center of said magnetic disc;
- carriage means for supporting said head in close physical proximity to said lead screw;
- means secured to said carriage and resiliently mating with the groove in said lead screw substantially on one side only of said lead screw to cause the magnetic head to precisely move to the radial position indicated by the orientation of said lead screw despite wear in said lead screw; and
- stepping motor means for rotating said lead screw to shift said head between adjacent tracks which are less than 0.015 inch apart.
- 10. A precision high capacity floppy disc memory system as defined in claim 9 wherein said system includes means for actuating said stepping motor to move said head between adjacent tracks which are substantially 1/100 of an inch apart.
- 11. A high capacity memory apparatus for use with floppy magnetic discs having a central opening, comprising:
- means, including a hub making an interference fit with the central opening in said disc, for accurately mounting a magnetic storage type floppy disc for rotation about a central opening in the disc;
- at least one head for magnetically reading and/or writing on said magnetic disc;
- means including a lead screw for selectively shifting the position of said head to different tracks on said storage disc;
- means including a carriage and a resilient follower element for engaging said lead screw for mounting said head in close proximity to said lead screw and follower to accurately shift the position of said head as said lead screw is rotated;
- mounting means for said lead screw for limiting thermal tolerances in the location of said follower element substantially to the section of said lead screw between said mandrel and said follower element;
- stepping motor means for rotating said lead screw to shift said head between tracks, said stepping motor means having more accurately located angular step positions spaced apart by a predetermined number of normal steps of said stepping motor means; and
- means for actuating said stepping motor in either direction by an angle equal to said predetermined number of steps, to shift said head between adjacent tracks which are less than 0.015 inch apart.
- 12. A high capacity floppy disc memory apparatus as defined in claim 11, wherein said stepper motor actuating means includes special logic circuit means for rapidly accelerating and then decelerating the rotor of said stepper motor in traversing said angle.
- 13. A precision, high capacity floppy disc memory system having low thermal deviation, comprising:
- a magnetic storage type floppy disc having a central mounting opening of a predetermined diameter;
- means including a central rotatable hub having an outer diameter equal to or slightly greater than said predetermined diameter for accurately mounting said magnetic storage type floppy disc for rotation about a central opening in the disc, the opening in said disc making a "line-on-line" or an interference fit with said mounting means;
- at least one head for magnetically reading and/or writing on said magnetic disc;
- means including a lead screw having a precision groove for selectively shifting the position of said head to different tracks on said storage disc;
- means for mounting the inner end of said lead screw against longitudinal movement adjacent the center of said magnetic disc;
- carriage means for supporting said head in close physical proximity to said lead screw;
- tapered means secured to said carriage and resiliently mating with the groove in said lead screw to cause the magnetic head to precisely move to the radial position indicated by the orientation of said lead screw despite wear in said lead screw; and
- means for rotating said lead screw to shift said head between adjacent tracks, which are less than 0.015 inch apart.
- 14. A precision high capacity floppy disc memory system as defined in claim 13 wherein said system includes means for actuating said stepping motor to move said head between adjacent tracks which are substantially 1/100 of an inch apart.
