Claims
- 1. A high rate electrochemical cell comprising:a container having a closed bottom end and an open top end; a cathode disposed in said container and having a positive polarity; an anode disposed in said container on one side of said cathode, said anode having an electrochemically active powder and a negative polarity; a positive current collector in contact with said cathode; an outer electrochemically active layer having said negative polarity and disposed on another side of said cathode, wherein said outer electrochemically active layer consists of a foil; a separator disposed between said cathode and said anode, said separator further disposed between said cathode and said outer electrochemically active layer, wherein the foil is wrapped around said separator; a negative current collector connected in contact with said anode; an electrical connector connecting said outer electrochemically active layer to at least one of said anode and said negative current collector; a dielectric layer disposed between said outer electrochemically active layer and said container; and a cover assembly assembled to said open top end of said container.
- 2. The electrochemical cell as defined in claim 1, wherein said metal foil comprises a zinc foil.
- 3. The electrochemical cell as defined in claim 1, wherein said foil has a thickness of no greater than 3 mils.
- 4. The electrochemical cell as defined in claim 1, wherein said positive current collector is connected to said container to form a positive terminal, and said negative current collector is connected to a negative terminal.
- 5. The electrochemical cell as defined in claim 1, wherein said positive current collector comprises a conductive grid integrally molded in said cathode.
- 6. The electrochemical cell as defined in claim 1, wherein said cathode is formed as a cylindrical bobbin having a cylindrical cavity formed therein, and said anode is disposed centrally within said cylindrical cavity.
