Claims
- 1. A differential spectrometry system for detecting light whose wavelength falls within a narrow waveband, comprising:
- a plurality of light detectors configured to detect light that falls within respective wavebands that are wider than said narrow waveband, and for generating respective outputs that vary with the amount of light within said respective wide wavebands, said wide wavebands including overlapping and non-overlapping portions, with one of said portions comprising said narrow waveband, and
- a processor for operating upon said detector outputs to produce an output signal which includes substantially only said narrow waveband.
- 2. The system of claim 1, wherein said narrow waveband is the narrower of said overlapping and non-overlapping portions.
- 3. A differential spectrometry system for detecting light whose wavelength falls between boundaries .lambda..sub.1, and (.lambda..sub.1 +.DELTA..lambda.), comprising:
- a first light detector configured to detect light whose wavelength falls between a first set of wavelength boundaries .lambda..sub.1 and .lambda..sub.2, and to generate a first output that varies with the amount of light within said first wavelength boundaries,
- a second light detector configured to detect light whose wavelength falls between a second set of wavelength boundaries (.lambda..sub.1 +.DELTA..lambda.) and .lambda..sub.2, and to generate a second output that is proportional to the amount of light within said second wavelength boundaries, and
- a processor connected to sense the difference between said first and second outputs as an indication of the light between .lambda..sub.1, and (.lambda..sub.1 +.DELTA..lambda.).
- 4. The system of claim 3, wherein .lambda..sub.1 <.lambda..sub.2.
- 5. The system of claim 3, wherein .lambda..sub.1 >.lambda..sub.2.
- 6. The system of claim 3, wherein each of said first and second light detectors comprise:
- an optical detector, and
- an optical filter configured and positioned so that its respective detector receives light only within its respective wavelength boundaries.
- 7. The system of claim 6, wherein each of said first and second optical filters comprise:
- an optically transmissive substrate, and
- a quarter-wave stack on said substrate that is designed to reflect light that falls outside of the filter's respective set of wavelength boundaries.
- 8. The system of claim 3, wherein said processor comprises an operational amplifier.
- 9. A method of detecting light whose wavelength falls within a narrow waveband, comprising the steps of:
- detecting incident light over a plurality of wavebands that are each substantially wider than the narrow waveband, and at least one of which includes the narrow waveband, and
- operating on said wider wavebands to cancel the wavebands outside said narrow wavebands, and yield a residual signal across said narrow waveband.
- 10. The method of claim 9, wherein said narrow waveband comprises an overlapping portion of said wider wavebands.
- 11. The method of claim 9, wherein said narrow waveband comprises a non-overlapping portion of said wider wavebands.
