Claims
- 1. A process for preparing a water-continuous emulsion of a curable elastomeric polymer comprising the steps of:
(I) mixing;
(A) 100 parts of a curable elastomeric polymer having a viscosity of 0.5 to 1,000,000 KPa-s and a glass transition temperature up to 50° C., (B) 3 to 30 parts of a surfactant, (C) 0.5 to 50 parts of an internal cure additive, (D) 5 to 45 parts water, to form a water-continuous emulsion of the curable elastomeric polymer having a solids content of greater than 75%, an average particle size less than 5 μm, and has sufficient stability to produce a stable lower solids emulsion upon dilution with water.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein the water is added in incremental portions, whereby each incremental portion comprises less than 8 weight % of components (A) and (B) combined and each incremental portion of water is added successively to the previous after the dispersion of the previous incremental portion of water, wherein sufficient incremental portions of water are added to form the water-continuous emulsion of the elastomeric polymer.
- 3. The process of claim 1 wherein each successive incremental portion of water comprises less than 4 weight % of components (A) and (B) combined.
- 4. The process of claim 1 wherein the successive incremental portion of water comprises less than 2 weight % of components (A) and (B) combined.
- 5. The process of claim 1 wherein the water is added in 4 incremental portions.
- 6. The process of claim 1 wherein the water is added in 2 incremental portions.
- 7. The process of claim 1 wherein the curable elastomeric polymer is a polyisobutylene polymer in which at least 50 mole percent of the repeat units are isobutylene units.
- 8. The process of claim 1 wherein the elastomeric polymer is a silylated copolymer of an isomonoolefin and a vinyl aromatic monomer.
- 9. The process according to claim 1 wherein (E) a plasticizer is included in the mixing.
- 10. The process of claim 9 wherein (E) the plasticizer is selected from mineral oil, carboxylic acid functional hydrocarbons containing at least 8 carbon atoms, and ester functional hydrocarbon containing at least 8 carbon atoms.
- 11. The process of claim 1 wherein (F) a low molecular weight acid is included in the mixing.
- 12. The process of claim 9 wherein (F) a low molecular weight acid is included in the mixing.
- 13. The process of claim 11 wherein the low molecular weight acid is acetic acid.
- 14. The process of claim 1 wherein 5 to 30 parts of water are added.
- 15. The process of claim 1 wherein 5 to 20 parts of water are added.
- 16. The process of claim 1 further comprising the step of:
(III) mixing additional water to the water-continuous emulsion of the silylated elastomer polymer to form a diluted emulsion of the silylated elastomer polymer.
- 17. The process of claim 1 wherein the mixing is provided by a continuous mixer.
- 18. The process of claim 17 wherein the continuous mixer is an extruder.
- 19. The process of claim 1 wherein the mixing is provided by a batch mixer.
- 20. A process for preparing a water-continuous emulsion of a curable elastomeric polymer comprising:
(I) forming a premix comprising;
(A) 100 parts of a curable elastomeric polymer having a viscosity of 0.5 to 1,000,000 KPa-s and a glass transition temperature up to 50° C., (B) 3 to 30 parts of a surfactant, (C) 0.5 to 50 parts of an internal cure additive, and optionally,
(E) a plasticizer, (F) a low molecular weight acid, (II) adding;
(D) 5 to 45 parts water to the premix with mixing thereby forming a water-continuous emulsion of the curable elastomeric polymer having a solids content of greater than 75%, an average particle size less than 5 μm, and has sufficient stability to produce a stable lower solids emulsion upon dilution with water.
- 21. A process for preparing a water-continuous emulsion of a curable elastomeric polymer comprising:
adding
(B) 3 to 30 parts of a surfactant, (C) 0.5 to 50 parts of an internal cure additive, (D) 5 to 45 parts water, and optionally,
(E) a plasticizer, (F) a low molecular weight acid, to
(A) 100 parts of a curable elastomeric polymer having a viscosity of 0.5 to 1,000,000 KPa-s and a glass transition temperature up to 50° C., with mixing, wherein the water (D) is added in incremental portions, whereby each incremental portion comprises less than 8 weight % of the components (A) and (B) combined and each incremental portion of water is added successively to the previous after the dispersion of the previous incremental portion of water, wherein sufficient incremental portions of water are added to form the water-continuous emulsion of the curable elastomeric polymer.
- 22. The process of claim 21 wherein the mixing is provided by a continuous mixer.
- 23. The process of claim 22 wherein the continuous mixer is an extruder.
- 24. The water-continuous emulsion produced by the process of claim 1.
- 25. The water-continuous emulsion produced by the process of claim 2.
- 26. The water-continuous emulsion produced by the process of claim 3.
- 27. The water-continuous emulsion produced by the process of claim 4.
- 28. The water-continuous emulsion produced by the process of claim 5.
- 29. The water-continuous emulsion produced by the process of claim 6.
- 30. The water-continuous emulsion produced by the process of claim 7.
- 31. The water-continuous emulsion produced by the process of claim 8.
- 32. The water-continuous emulsion produced by the process of claim 9.
- 33. The water-continuous emulsion produced by the process of claim 10.
- 34. The water-continuous emulsion produced by the process of claim 11.
- 35. The water-continuous emulsion produced by the process of claim 12.
- 36. The water-continuous emulsion produced by the process of claim 13.
- 37. The water-continuous emulsion produced by the process of claim 14.
- 38. The water-continuous emulsion produced by the process of claim 15.
- 39. The water-continuous emulsion produced by the process of claim 16.
