An electric baking oven according to claim 1 wherein said open mesh vertical baking basket contains an integral lower metal plate located at least ½ inch below said open mesh bottom support for the food to support said basket in a manner that permits hot air to enter said open mesh bottom support and rise through the food in said basket.
- 11. An electric baking oven according to claim 1 wherein said vertically oriented toaster heating elements are configured for toasting of foods in said oven without cooperation of said elongated air heating member.
- 12. A convertible electric baking oven for food items and a batch type toaster for sliced bread and the like consisting of a heatable toasting zone, at least one heater in said toasting zone, a mobile normally open toasting basket to hold the bread slice, an open mesh vertically oriented baking basket having large vertical faces to hold the food items, each of said toasting basket and said baking basket being selectively removably mounted in an unheated waiting zone remote from toasting zone, a transport mechanism to transfer said basket from said waiting zone to said toasting zone, associated electrical and electronic controls designed to activate said heater while restraining motion of said transport mechanism in said waiting zone remote from said toasting zone until the temperature of said heater and the thermal conditions in said toasting zone have reached designated heating conditions and then direct said basket to enter and be held within said toasting zone until a heating cycle is complete.
- 13. An oven according to claim 12 wherein said heater includes segmented toasting elements generally vertically arranged in said toasting zone.
- 14. An oven according to claim 12 wherein said heater include a heater located below said baking basket when said baking basket is in said toasting zone, and said heater being offset from a longitudinal center line of said basket.
- 15. An oven according to claim 14 wherein the bottom of said baking basket is shielded from direct radiation emitted by said heater.
- 16. An oven according to claim 15 wherein said bottom of said basket is shielded by locating said heater in a relatively open but roofed compartment below said baking basket.
- 17. An oven according to claim 15 wherein said basket is supported by and spaced above a solid base to shield said bottom of said baking basket.
- 18. An oven according to claim 12 wherein said heater includes heating elements located at the sides of said toasting zone in a planar configuration facing said vertical faces of said baking basket when said baking basket is in said toasting zone.
- 19. An oven according to claim 18 wherein said heater further includes an auxiliary heater below said baking basket when said baking basket is in said toasting zone.
- 20. An oven according to claim 12 wherein said baking basket includes a solid bottom tray to catch and contain grease or crumbs that may fall from the food item.
- 21. An oven according to claim 20 wherein said baking basket has a mesh bottom located above and spaced from said bottom tray to allow natural convection of heated air rising to circulate through said mesh bottom.
- 22. An oven according to claim 20 wherein said baking basket vertical faces are mesh side walls which are hinged to lie flat so as to facilitate removal of the food item after cooking.
- 23. An oven according to claim 22 wherein said baking basket includes closed end walls having handles to facilitate the handling of said baking basket.
- 24. An oven according to claim 23 wherein said baking basket includes cover lids at the top of said basket, and said cover lids being spaced from each other to create an air gap for allowing the escape of hot air.
