Claims
- 1. An electric baking oven comprising an open mesh vertically-oriented baking basket having large vertical faces to hold food while the food is baked in air, a programmed energy supply assembly to provide a programmed combination of radiant, and convective and conductive energy transfer, an electrical programming control for controlling the energy from vertically oriented toaster heating elements located in juxtaposition to said large vertical faces of said basket and from at least one elongated air heating member located below said vertical baking basket with the axis of said elongated heating member oriented nominally horizontal and parallel to the longer horizontal axis of said vertically oriented baking basket.
- 2. An electric baking oven according to claim 1 wherein the air heated by said elongated air heating element is directed upward between said largest faces of said vertical basket with the cooperation of vertical plates in close proximity to said air heating element that extend parallel to the long axis of said heating element so as to minimize the flow of heated air between said toaster heating elements and adjacent vertical oven walls.
- 3. An electric baking oven according to claim 1 including a transport mechanism to transport said vertical baking basket into and out of a baking zone of said oven.
- 4. An electric baking oven according to claim 3 wherein said baking zone is located in the interior of a hollow housing, said housing having a top wall, an opening in said top wall communicating with said interior, said basket having a first position located at said top wall and extending outwardly of said housing entirely out of said baking zone, said first position being a waiting zone, and said basket being movable by said transport mechanism to a position in said baking zone.
- 5. An electric baking oven according to claim 1 wherein said axis of said elongated air heating member located below the vertical basket is offset horizontally relative to a vertical plane through the central long horizontal axis of said baking basket.
- 6. An electric baking oven according to claim 1 including more than one of said elongated air heating members located below said vertically-oriented baking basket and positioned to create a greater flow of heated air past one of said vertical faces and then past the other of said vertical faces of said basket.
- 7. An electric baking oven according to claim 1 wherein baffling structure is located in proximity to said elongated air heating member to unbalance the amount of heated air flowing from said air heating member to each of said large vertical faces of said open mesh vertically oriented baking basket.
- 8. An electric baking oven according to claim 1 wherein sections of each of said toaster heating elements are electrically independent so that the amount of thermal energy from portions of said toasting elements and the amount of thermal energy from the said elongated air heating member can be independently controlled by the electrical programming control during the baking cycle.
- 9. An electric baking oven according to claim 1 wherein said open mesh vertical baking basket is constructed with open mesh on at least said large vertical faces and on a bottom support for the food.
- 10. An electric baking oven according to claim 1 wherein said open mesh vertical baking basket contains an integral lower metal plate located at least ½ inch below said open mesh bottom support for the food to support said basket in a manner that permits hot air to enter said open mesh bottom support and rise through the food in said basket.
- 11. An electric baking oven according to claim 1 wherein said vertically oriented toaster heating elements are configured for toasting of foods in said oven without cooperation of said elongated air heating member.
- 12. A batch type toaster for sliced bread comprising a heated toasting zone, one or more radiant heaters in said toasting zone, a mobile normally open transport to hold the bread slice, a designated unheated waiting zone for said mobile transport remote from said toasting zone, a transport mechanism to transfer said open transport with the bread slice from said waiting zone to the toasting zone, associated electrical and electronic controls designed to activate said one or more radiant heaters while restraining motion of said transport holder in said waiting zone remote from said toasting zone until the temperature of the radiant heaters and the thermal conditions in said toasting zone have reached designated toasting conditions and then direct said mobile transport to enter and be held within said toasting zone until the toasting cycle is complete.
- 13. A toaster according to claim 12 wherein said toasting zone is located in the interior of a hollow housing, said housing having a top wall, an opening in said top wall communicating with said interior, said mobile transport comprising a basket having a first position located at said top wall and extending outwardly of said housing entirely outside of said toasting zone, said first position being said waiting zone, and said basket being movable by said transport mechanism to a second position in said toasting zone.
- 14. A toaster according to claim 12 wherein said basket includes a bottom toasting tray for receiving the bread slice, and said basket further including skeletal side walls for being disposed on opposite sides of the bread slice.
- 15. A toaster according to claim 14 wherein said skeletal side walls are pivotally mounted for being angled away from each other when said basket is in said waiting zone whereby said basket is in an open condition to readily receive the bread slice, and said skeletal side walls are pivoted toward each other when said basket is in said heated zone.
- 16. A toaster according to claim 15 wherein a heater box is located in said heated zone, said heater box having side walls with heater elements mounted on said side wall.
- 17. A toaster according to claim 16 wherein a lower heater is mounted in said heated zone below and between said heater box side walls.
- 18. A toaster according to claim 17 including actuating structure in said housing for moving said heater box heater elements toward each other for being disposed close to the bread slice.
- 19. A heater according to claim 18 including actuating structure in said housing for moving said heater box heater elements toward each other for being disposed close to the bread slice.
- 20. A heater according to claim 12 wherein a heater box is located in said heated zone, said heater box having side walls with heater elements mounted on said side wall.
- 21. A heater according to claim 20 wherein a lower heater is mounted in said heated zone below and between said heater box side walls.
- 22. A heater according to claim 21 including actuating structure in said housing for moving said heater box heater elements toward each other for being disposed close to the bread slice.
- 23. A heater according to claim 20 including actuating structure in said housing for moving said heater box heater elements toward each other for being disposed close to the bread slice.
- 24. A toaster according to claim 12 where said one or more radiant heaters in said toasting zone are held at an orange-red color temperature.
- 25. A toaster according to claim 24 where said one or more radiant heaters include heating elements which are mechanically movable inward and against the bread to accelerate the toasting cycle.
- 26. A toaster according to claim 12 wherein said mobile transport includes a supporting base that isolates the bread from thermal drying effects during a preheat period until said thermal conditions in said toasting zone reach designated toasting conditions and said mobile transport is then directed to enter said toasting zone.
- 27. A toaster according to claim 12 where said mobile transport holding the bread has pivoting rails that restrain the bread to maintain a vertical orientation within said mobile transport.
- 28. A toaster according to claim 12 wherein said transport mechanism includes a motor driven screw and a load bearing shaft to move and support said mobile transport.
- 29. A toaster according to claim 12 wherein said radiant heater or heaters extend over a large and extended surface area adjacent a food being toasted.
- 30. A toaster according to claim 12 where said electrical and electronic controls include controls to permit movement of the bread into the toasting zone before said one or more radiant heaters are activated.
- 31. A toaster according to claim 12 where an auxiliary tubular heater is positioned below said one or more radiant heaters.
- 32. A batch type toaster for sliced bread comprising a heated toasting zone, one or more radiant heaters in said toasting zone, a mobile normally open transport to hold the bread slice, a designated unheated waiting zone for said mobile transport upstream from said toasting zone, a transport mechanism to transfer said open transport with the bread slice from said waiting zone to the toasting zone, associated electrical and electronic controls designed to activate said one or more radiant heaters while restraining motion of said transport holder in said waiting zone until the temperature of the radiant heaters and the thermal conditions in said toasting zone have sufficiently reached designated toasting conditions and then direct said mobile transport to enter and be located within said toasting zone a sufficient time to toast the bread slice.
- 33. A toaster according to claim 32 wherein at least a portion of said mobile transport is located in said waiting zone until the designated toasting conditions have been substantially reached.
